Huge Great White Shark Encounter While Spearfishing The Oregon Coast

- One of the craziest days of spearfishing on the Oregon coast. What started as a calm beautiful day on the Oregon coast turned into one of the most exhilarating experiences. In a short span of 15 minutes we had a new Oregon state record ling cod shot by Derek (@speraoking) and immediately after that I drop down and have a giant great white shark come in really close to me to come check out the action. It's going to be hard to top this day
I'm 70 yrs old. This is awesome content for any fisherman. Subscribed.
Glad to have you here 🙏🏼
The shark doesnt scare me nearly as much as your barber....
Best Laugh in a month, Thanks Days, Hahaha..
You mean butcher?😂
Yesssssss😂
Omg😅😅😅
It’s literally what he asked for
The guy laughing is usually the guy who gets hit in the movies 😂
That laugh was absolutely diabolical

Was convinced bro was a supervillian until we heard the context
The reaction of joy when he surfaces from the struggle with that fish is a joyous soul touching moment. I love snorkelling but if I am in an area known for GWS, count me well out.
😂🙌🏼
You could hear the water from its tail kick! The intuition/vibe about if an area is fishy or sketchy is no joke. Stoked for your buddy. Craziest spearfishing video!
Haha ya it’s even crazier if you listen to it on a good sound system. Can really hear the power in his tail. Appreciate that👊🏼
Crazy moment when you realize you are not the apex predator in the area anymore.
Humbling for sure
@@bigwaterguydude I would have crapped myself and the shark would have swam away thinking I ain't eating that junk
Should know this before entering the ocean or the wilderness.
@user-followyeshua nah actually. Shit attracts sharks. They call jt shark sugar actually
Technically, we're still the apex predator there. They don't hunt us in our environment, but we sure do get th in theirs. Great Whites are a protected species, but if they weren't, plenty of folks would hunt or fish them. I have seen a video of a guy getting a stone shot on a decent sized thresher, which is excellent eating. Also there is plenty of evidence of Native Americans and Pacific Islanders taking large sharks on their fishing expeditions. Some dudes would view them as prey.
That is just the shark you saw. Who knows how many others were out there nearby. Glad you stayed calm and faced it.
U are 100% correct ! Just cause he only seen 1 doesn't mean others didn't seem him.
EXACTLY!! Seems like all the ones ive seen in video clips came from behind the diver, terrifying
@FISHGEEK305 totally 😬
Great video, I can feel that moment you see it and the heart starts pumping! Handled it perfectly didn’t panic… looks like you boys had a sick day
Appreciate that 🤝🏼 it was a day we’ll remember for a while
Such a great video on so many levels. Brotherhood, spear fishing and some amazing shots. The Great White was a bonus. I live in San Diego brother. So cool.
Appreciate that bro 🙏🏼
Total enjoyment and total terror all in one dive session... What a day! Subscribed 🤙
Exactly right. Good to have you!
1st time viewer, just subbed. Ya'll are savages. RESPECT!
@@elcarlissimo haha thanks 🙌🏼
Damn! You're lucky there that you just turned your head and saw the shark even for a split second, or I think that one would have grabbed you if you hadn't! But a nice video in general! You do need some big balls to dive like this in known great white water! 🦈 Keep it up! 👍🏻
Greetings from Stockholm Sweden!
👊🏼🙏🏼
Yeah then let see who will laugh like mad if that shark gave him a love bite.
Alwaysaughing not really careful catching the mullet and instead the GW catches you.
You would never catch me in that murky water, that’s the beginning of all jaws movies. 😂😂😂😂
That laugh and spit was amazing 😂 as a hunter i know the feeling. 😂 seriously though the thought that this video could have been so different is absolutely terrifying.
This is an amazing video! Do it as much as possible, and we will live vicariously through your work! Congratulations on the shark encounter!
Such an awesome video!! I just caught my first Lingcod a few months ago. 10lbs lol.
Btw Jaws scared the hell out of me!
It was nice running into you at Gbaldi yesterday! Please be safe!!!!
I don’t know what’s more terrifying - the Great White or buddy’s haircut 😂
That haircut is a star in itself. Fantastic
Don’t knock the Mississippi Mudflap until you rock it. Only a select few can carry the torch
It's something for his boyfriend to hold onto😂
"Derek takes losing a fish very personally"... I bet Derek loved that comment.. 😂
I had a friend that used to freedive for really large Ling Cod with a Three-prong Paralyzer Tip. He would first, locate and shoot a smaller fish...about 2 lbs. He would then swim around and locate a huge Ling, usually hidden in a small cave. He would approach the Ling slowly, so he wouldn't spook it. He would then extend the spear with the rubbers stretched to the max, and wave it slowly in front of its face. The Cod would lung forward and gulp down the fish, still impaled on the spear. He would then let loose of the spear while still controlling the spear. Of course, the prongs would push through the smaller fish and spread out into the Cod. Ling Cod have difficulty backing up, especially with a long spear stuck in their gullet. He would then use his knife to kill the Cod, remove the spear and put the Ling on his stringer and head for his kayak.
First time seeing your Chanel, awesome content, seem like humble chill dudes.
sick bro!!! freaking love this video. I was in Eugene for 8 years wish I woulda linked up with yall. Love Pac City. Had a huge white swim up to me in Florence while surfing the jetty. Same feeling of trying not to panic but in the moment very tough. Glad yall got out safe.
The Florence Jetty is sketchy. In the Jetty and outside the Jetty
He laughs like Dr. Evil in Austin Powers... when all the bad guys are just laughing over and over just to make Dr evil happy😂
I need to know if he got the record or not! As a fisherman I know that is a once in a lifetime fish and I am so excited for him and you guys! Keep putting out the awesome content! You just got a new subscriber! 🤿🐟🦈
It’s pending paperwork right now. It’s on track to become the new state record. Thank you 🙏🏼
He said the record was on 20 some pounds and this one was 40+
Glad you showed up in my recommended I hope I see more of your content
@@ILoveYouLarussel more to come!!
Sweet dude. You have been killing it on views lately. Crazy shark encounter that’s why I stick to fishing for lings from the boat lmao! Awesome video!! 😂🤙🏼
Appreciate that 🙏🏼 I can’t blame you
@@pnwchromecatchers you gotta get in with the opposition make the playing field fair.
The guys over the top laughing is basically telling the Pointer come eat me.
that was hilarious. the shark was as scared as dude was and both split as fast as they could in opposite directions. love them white sharks!!
I met you the day after you went out with my buddy Casey by the Lewis. I love your videos man. I have been watching forever. Keep doing what you do it is fun to watch ya do what you enjoy. Also thanks for cleaning our rivers man I hate losing shit lol to snags.
appreciate that man!
Dude this video is insane. Thank you! Subscribed!
Hey man, great video , I’m looking at getting into freediving/spear fishing and this video is helpful for info and understanding of the sport. I’m also checking out your boat out as I would like to build my own. What is the length of the boat and horsepower of the motor? Also, where was the steering console acquired from? Keep making great videos 😁
“And what did you say the name of this shark is?”
“It’s a carcharadon carcharias. It’s a great white.”
Fun to see this where you live. That Cod is huge!!
I don’t think I’ve EVER seen our waters that flat before.. what luck!
Gotta take full advantage of days like that
"A veeery bigshark". Yes, fisherman - for sure 20 feet😂
Hello from the East Coast. Really enjoyed the footy. Definitely one of those days you will never forget. Glad you all made it out ok.
Appreciate you watching from the East Coast!
Fantastic video! Thank you for sharing. so fun!
Dude... That is the craziest Ling Cod i have ever seen!! I've caught some of them fishing there but TINY compared to that. Then to see that Great White.. (have you interacted Wolf eels at all they fascinate me) i love this Oregon coast content. I live in Corvallis and it's so cool to see footage like this of our coast.
Thanks bro. Yes we recently seen a 4-5ft wolf eel. Crazy
This was such a great video !
🙏🏼
The shark wasn’t aggressive at all. It’s always scary when that happens, but it was just chillin checking out the scene. It would have been MOVING if it was trying anything
Fun fact boys and ladies, keep the fish in a big enough cooler with cold/icy water and it'll keep it caught weight for weight in. :) That fish is an awesome find guys, great job.
One of my favorite places to kayak fish here on the coast. It was cool to see what the bottom structure looks like and just how many fish are down there. I know the GWs are down there but I just try not to think about them. I haven't seen one out there yet **knocks on wood**. Great video and you got a new sub!
🙏🏼
Crushed this one my guy!🚀🚀🚀
💙
Wow Iam 70 years old! That's a huge Ling Cod congratulations 🎣👍
In NZ we call a cod that size a “donkey” Awesome stuff my man
Wow crazy video 😅 Thankful that shark knew to stay away. Happy bro was able to get his big fish lol Thanks for sharing !
Great watch ....that white was well sneaky !
Amazing video! Y’all have some stones going down there creating a blood bath with White Sharks around. Y’all look like seals too. Careful!
0:56 Great white: which pair of shoes will I wear today 😛
"that would have been a really intimidating fish underwater"
great white: "Oh yeah..."
😂
I glad we have to put back any ling cod over 36"in here in Puget Sound that's why there's abundance of ling cod here. I catch huge ling cod every season and release them and being
proud to do so. those are the breeders of the ling cod. My biggest was 58"in, even the divers in Puget Sound let them go.
I know it's fun to catch them but it even nicer to watch them swim off and get great video! I know Washington cost is the same 26"in or bigger but that's why there all like the small ones like you guys caught on the costs, you guys had a good harvest day..👍🎣
Cool story, little guy. Now off to bed.
@@DiversityPuppets-4Realz Thanks Big guy Dive on with your Puppets!🤣
@@dansSawfish5604 🤣
That ling was a monster, the old bull of the woods.14:50 that is called feeling sharkie.
Keep making videos, please! Awesome stuff
You guys got some big balls...! No way I could do that!
Awesome video!! Where at on the Oregon Coast?
What settings do you use on your DJI Osmo 5?
Awesome video. Congratulations on the awesome trip.
He came out the water laughing like he defeated the final boss 😂
@@thatguyterps3284 he knew
Wowee!!! What a day that was. So awesome!
Hey Mate, very cool encounter. The video is hard to make out, but I think that may have been a Salmon Shark, not a White. The the dorsal and pec fins look a bit shorter and more rounded and the position of pec relative to dorsal. Hard to say. But beautiful animal and very cool encounter either way!
That shark looks much too big to not be a great white
Edit: and (12:35), i would say the pec fins look significantly longer than a salmon shark's and too far forward relative to the dorsal fin to be a salmon. Dorsal fin also looks pretty pointed imo, not round, and not large enough relative to the body to be a salmon shark
I’m no expert, but that shark looks to be at least 10 feet long. If that were a salmon shark it would be an all timer. Also, the clear deviation of grey to white. That’s a white shark in my stupid opinion
Thats a GW ,Oregon is full of them 😅😅😅😅😅😅
That was a White without the slightest doubt.
That is a salmon shark, great whites are pretty rare on the oregon coast, I have fished and surfed pacific city specifically my whole life, salmon sharks are very common out there.
What time of year is this? Epic fish!!! Well handled calm exit from the shark, too.
Wow! That’s incredible and horrifying at the same time 😅
Definitely a brown wet suit moment 😅😅
😂‼️
you guys need a SCUBA diver to hold your gear underwater XD? I am in the albany/corvallis area and am instructor rated. id be jazzed to just hold stuff for you guys
Haha scuba divers are always good to have on your team
He has a point. With you doing the filming, you’re limited in the scope of presenting the shooting. We don’t come here to watch you film. We come here to watch you fish. But when you start having to pay someone to film you, you have to decide if it’s worth it. In an ideal world, yeah… Get someone to film you guys. But in the real world… You’re doing a pretty good job without having to fork out a lot of money to pay someone else to do the job that you’re already pretty good at.
@@jacobaccurso for free diving that makes things a bit more complex, I can't just follow them up to the surface for continuous filming. But from a safety and gear security side of things it can be nice to have a diver hanging around to deal with snags or dropped gear that falls down out of range of free diving. Granted they all look like skilled free divers so they may have a similar depth range as a scuba diver for gear retrieval
@ I’m totally on board with your “depth” of expertise on this topic. Very interesting point, though. I was intrigued. Now I am wondering if there are other channels that utilize a guy with tanks.
@ Personally, I think this young man should get picked up by Discovery to do his own adventure show.
I’m pretty sure the great white swam off because it knew you have a mullet! Even sharks know don’t ever mess with anyone who rocks a mullet!🤣💀
In all seriousness I’m glad y’all are safe and sound. That could’ve turned very bad!😳
I love the diabolical laughing paused by him choking and then continuous laughing again. 😂
I think you're the only one.
@@bigbassjonzI think so too! I had to fast forward through the “ laughing” portion.
Holy shit, I thought you guys were out at the pinicles not that close to the rock. Solid work
I have to give you guys props for going into that water in a raft. I live on the coast, and there is just no way I could do that knowing there are whites out there.
Crazy video. What an experience to have especially nailing that beast and having an encounter with a white shark !
Gotta come over and spearfish the orrgon coast one day !
That’s an amazing encounter! Glad you were safe.
Let those big lingcod go though!! They’re what keeps that fishery going there.
The ling cod fishery is very healthy here, it’s also hard to let them go after you shot it in the face 😅
@@bigwaterguy It's healthy in PC because of big females like that. Only breeding females get that large. You do you, but all the responsible fisher folk release BFF (Big Fat Females) Ling Cod in order to maintain what we have.
@@bigwaterguy 🤣
40 second teaser before video is a must, imo
Great video how deep is the water around haystack I’ve always wondered do you see sharks often?
Nice shark, but here in AK that's an average Ling... :-)
Great catch
“We’re gonna need a bigger boat. We need to leave. I just pooped my dry suit.”
Take a shot every time he says lingcod
@@nicolekwasny9837 😵💫
Two shots when he says 'the boys'
Oh my god, I just commented the same thing a second ago lmao.
Had a similar experience here in New Zealand that came flying into me, pulled off much the same as your shark did, didn't get that encounter on video but did have a much more chill encounter a year ago on vid.
Which coast is this? I think I’ve been down to see that island but never would even think about swimming to it
It's crazy how it took the mullet 40 years to migrate from the gulf coast to the northwest.
@@Josef_R 😂
They migrated down from Canada too.
Awesome day! Congrats on that lingcod and neat you got the shark on the camera! I'd like to try a fresh scallop like that!
Thank you! Our scallops are to kill for!
It’s funny to me that seeing sharks here on such big news. In Hawaii people swim with extremely aggressive Massive Tigers all the time, locals just give them a little poke to make them go away. And they keep fishing 😂
Farewell and Adieu!
When you trail targets, it helps with reaction target perception. Good practice, especially in water where our depth is skewed.
Relax, breathe, and smile.
13:42 Why were those 2 fish still alive? Especially the right one. Wasnt it killed few minutes before?
Nicely done
You obviously never fished ling cod in Alaska. That ling you caught us tiny compared to the lings in Alaska 😂
Larry, you’re the mayor of Shark City! These people think you want the beaches open!
What length is your zodiac? Thinking of running a similar setup but can’t decide on what size I need to bring a couple friends along.
This guy pulled a fish the size of a dog out of the water lol
Camera man never die
Great white haircut is terrifying 💈 😳
"we don't really encounter big sharks" is what we used to say surfing the northeast. not anymore.
Right? I really took it for granted growing up
Yeah Mr Whitie loves the murky water; I swam with a lotta White Pointers when I was younger. Always made it back into the boat or onto shore. Just take your time.
That’s where I kayak fish, always knew there is great whites out there but have yet to see one!
Congratulations!!! Thats awesome! Stay safe.
Wow, I’m not even a fisherman, let alone a diver, so I gotta ask, how long do you guys usually hold your breath snorkeling?
Amazing.
It is vary rare to see such a good spearfishing video
I appreciate that 🙏🏼
What part of Oregon coast were ya at? Closest town?
Good to get out, great job. Thats the same area Nate got his board bitten, and I see them in that area from time to time. Stay safe Excellent on the sea urchin removal.
Certainly a sharky area. Btw somehow I have one of your hoodies haha I’ve wore it in my previous videos
Swing by next time in town. I’ll get you an updated one
@@bigwaterguy I was kayak fishing on the edge of a channel in Tauranga harbour,in new Zealand,300 meters out from sure in only 5 meters Deep water, and saw a bow wave come straight for me 40 meters away from me.the great white went straight past me less than 1 meter under the surface, then as I was pull the anchor up ,the great white turned around and went back past me on the other side.i was in a 3 meter kayak, the shark was wider thank X2 kayaks put together side by side and at least 1.5 to 2 lengths of my kayak long.lets just say the 300 meter paddle back to shore was extremely slow
As a diver from Australia dobe with plenty whites im from Port Stephens its called shark alley here as its one the biggest gws breeding grounds and that shark was deffo not aggressive it was justbas surprised as you was you woulda know if it was aggressive
I was thinking, wtf is so funny, Derek?
