Overwatering is not about giving too much water, it's the frequency that you water - that matters 🤔

Thats why I use a hybrid of watering. I top water, but then il leave all the additional water in the pot for 20-30 minutes, so the roots that did not recieve water can drink up from bottom. I make sure to empty the pots after that time so they dont root drown. Little more time consuming but worked well so far for me. Also what alot of people dont get for outdoor plants a splash of water isnt a thing of nature, when it rains it usually rains for 15 minutes at minimum, up to hours. So u need to try to replicate that to deeply water the soil.

My trick is to water a bit less, but twice in the same hour or two. First I water all of my plants with about a third of the water they need, this gives the soil of each plant some time to hydrate first, then I go through all of my plant a second time to give them the rest of the water they need so that more water reaches the roots instead of flowing through those dry crevaces.

Yes! I’m working on that, when I notice that the soil is dry enough that the water just pools on top. I also then use the label to poke holes in the soil and break it up just a touch, so the water goes down, not just spreading out.
It feels as much an art as a science!

From time to time, dunking your plant pots in a bucket or tub full of clean water and leaving them in there for around 15 minutes, especially if you have unglazed terracotta pots, works well too. I do it even for my cacti and succulents and they absolutely love it. But again, frequency is the key here.

I used to overwater after only seeing that the top of the soil was dry, mistaking that it was time to water again. Took months for me to learn to it takes longer for moisture further down to dry out, just like you said. I finally stopped killing plants a few months ago after learning that alone, lol. Whenever I have a garden again, I'd love to look into that RainPoint product. Thank you for sharing these videos. There's always new things to learn!

As someone with a 1m² balcony COVERED in plants, I have to say that it's not always possible to implement deep watering even though I do agree that it's the best way to ensure sufficiently saturated soil.
My issue with my balcony is that I grow in containers and in the summer heat the soil dries up quickly while the plants would drown in the colder months. So I need drainage holes in the bottom to ensure that my balcony doesn't turn into a swamp when it rains. But that also means that I can't water my plants deeply since I'd waste water, annoy my downstairs neighbours, and also would just slightly moisten up the sides bc the water runs off before it seeps into the soil (as perfectly portrayed in the video).
So for my containers on the balcony I have to water once - during heatwaves even twice - each day to ensure the soil stays moist to take in enough water. It's a bit of a gamble really... too much and the water runs off, too little and it gets hard to fully saturate them to a point where they take in enough water before they dry up and die. I'm handling it well so far, rather risking some water runoff occasionally.
I only have plants on my balcony that want wet soil so this obviously doesn't work with aloe vera or any other plants that hate wet soil. I definitely agree that deep watering helps root development, just doesn't work with container gardening sometimes. Just thought I'd share an alternative point of view and see how people feel about it :)
PS: Bottom watering works really well for my indoor plants btw. Aloe vera plants have always been a challenge but now I only check if the leaves are firm and if they aren't, I water them from the bottom for a few days only when the dish is dry and until they are doing well again. This channel has helped me develop a better eye for indoor plants and while I still much rather tend to my vegetable plants, I haven't had a house plant die on me in years and a few times it was thanks to these videos. So thanks 🤗

I’m a chronic underwaterer. I love seeing plants in my home, but sometimes I just neglect them. I have moved several of my plants into containers without drainage (ceramic bowls for shallow-rooted plants, cut-up clean plastic bottles for deep diggers,…) and so far they’ve all been okay with it. I’ve always been into bottom watering, but now it’s de facto what happens even as I top-water them. ^^ Of course it only works because I never drown them: I am very aware of what they should look like, what dry soil feels like, and how much each pot should weigh when well-watered.

I was taught to soak my plants when dry for about 20 minutes, by placing the pot in a bowl of water or something similar, rather than watering it from top or bottom, because it should be soaked thoroughly but never be standing in water for longer than that.

That’s the bottom watering he’s talking about. I use a big (wide) basin and do 3 or 5 plants at a time this way. It saturates the soil so the soil really absorbs the moisture, rather than just having water run through it.

Thanks for this video. My tendency is to check the soil of the plants I have, both of which can get super dried out before they need watering - catnip and aloe vera. Then my tendency is to water them until water starts coming out of the bottom of the dish. Then I stop watering. I also mist my plants once or twice a week, depending on how and dry it is. I never thought, though, that the watering I'm doing isn't right. I'll have to see if a soil hydration meter is inexpensive enough for me to purchase one so that I make sure they're both getting enough water.
I got the catnip plant just over a year ago and it's made it through the winter. I do need to move it into a bigger pot, which I'll do today. I just needed to get one. I have it out for easy access for my cat. It also makes a good tea and is excellent in salads for me. So I know that I must be doing something right by it if it's made it this long. In the past, my catnip plants always died off. I'm learning more, though, about plant care, and this video has shown me more about good plant care. Thanks again. :)

There are definitely two schools of thought on this, I mainly top water. This way, I can see it come out the bottom. If I bottom water, the bottom can get water logged, and some plants are shallow rooted. My strings of things appreciate being top watered. If I splash some in the container to bottom water, then I have to go back and check that there is no water left for the plant to sit in. Also, I have to check that the soil is moist enough, maybe I have to add more. I want one and done. Our plants thrive either way 😊

Fill up your sink and submerge your plant's pot until no more or very little air bubbles appear, pull out and let drain. Your frequency of watering will be reduced drastically, just be gentle as you give them the plunge to not wash away a good portion of the top soil. And use a hydrometer!

    • @jamesa7506
      @jamesa7506 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ImMimicute my best suggestion to you, my friend, is take notice of your plants and their individual requirements. A hydrometer is an excellent tool to inform you of the hydration of the soil, and adjusting the watering to the needs of the plant and the environment you are keeping it in. A good place to start is soak on Sunday and take measurements with your hydrometer, record or remember its readings and the effects on the plant throughout the week, and on the following Sunday adjust the watering, etc. according to the information you've gathered. Nearly all of my plants are outside and require different attention than what your indoor plants will, ie: additional light top watering and feeding, etc. I apologize for the generalized information, but as your plants and environments differ from mine it is the best starting point I can legitimately give you. Becoming in tune with your specific plants and care routines for them are individual and specific and most importantly, takes time and experience which you can not buy or gain 2nd hand, so to speak. I hope I've helped more than hindered you.

I tested this with an aloe plant and unfortunately it didn't make it but i learned a valuable lesson. Also i use a long thin stick with a round end to see how much water i need to add. Then i poke hole in the dirt so the water doesn't evaporate from the sunroom my plants live in.

The only plants I water daily are the ones outside that experience 40c+ weather and I only bottom water them to help them get through the heat, I also mulch them as well and they love me for it (keep in mind if you do this make sure to check them twice a day if not more cause plants with tell you if they had too much) spicy peppers loves this as well since they love warm weather but they don't like it too hot but with afternoon shade and extra water it's on round 2 of pepper production

i started to experiment more with bottom watering after i bought a moisture meter.
since i use a very airy soil mixture i was on the assumption that it doesnt really work since my soil isnt really pulling all that much water from the bottom at all and the water level basicly stays around the same. how ever when using an moisture meter, i can see that the soil indeed is pulling water. its just that it doesnt pull a lot and after a good soak the soil inside is sitting somewhere in the green ''moist'' area. it doesnt get WET like it gets when flushing with water from the top, it waters more suddle and i probably need to bottom water more often than i need to top water because moist to dry takes a lot less time than wet to dry.
but thats doesnt mean its a bad thing right? because thats probably whats causing overwatering because the plant cant dry out a complete wet pot fast enough. if that means i have to water a little more often, thats fine.

Sir, what is the case for those Dormant succulents?
Especially during the rainy season, should they be watered them when bone dry? Despite having a fairly Good draining soil causes the leaves to become mushy.
So, should I only water the succulents when the leaves turn wrinkly? for most of em are hybrids.

Completely off topic but can you give me advice please Richard ? So my rubber plant which had 3 plants in one pot isn’t looking good . One think plant died but now the other two plants aren’t looking good too . New leaf is thin and small and the rest of the leaves are drooping. I checked the roots today and removed the dead plant . It all looked ok . After not knowing what to do I put it outside in the rain hoping that will cheer it up . Not sure if it could have thrips as I found one on my orbifolia and a cheese plant . I sprayed them with neem and put them outside in the rain too 😂😂. I’m hoping any passing ladybird will eat any thrips left . Thanks for any advice keely

Was that really your parent or did you grab a stock photo? They're cute either way!
I don't bring any of my downstairs plants to the sink BC I'd have to carry them all through the house. I do water fast though. Meaning, I pour water on the top so it's covering the top and then I wait for it to show in the tray. If about 10 seconds go by without any water in the tray they get it again. That usually is enough to cause some water to go through. Then, depending on the plant and quantity in the tray I often just leave it and then it's gone later. So I guess it's a top water turned bottom water. I have some plants that aren't in the greatest soil so I'm far more careful BC I know if I fully saturate it will lead to evil 😧 those plants however tend to be bottom watered so their soil can suck up the water evenly as otherwise I would prob be like your mom and fearfully splash them 😜
Example, my Thai came in cocoa fiber and it's really light and fluffy but it never really dries out. I bet I only water it monthly. I should repot but it is actively growing and it was an expensive plant that has a warranty which is voided if I repot. I'm it's case, it's frustrating me but it's not broken and the plant is doing excellent so a repot would be for the purpose of putting my mixture and not BC it's compacted or soggy or failing to thrive...
