It was before update 34? I think 34 added dorreta and refinery mission. But with the pipe mechanic from refinery they "refined" the salvage op refuel sequence with a slimmed down version of it. The days of Bluetooth fuel transfer were...strange, but it never decreased the amount of fun we had.
I didnt even question it at the time, it was only when they added building the connection to refuel the pod that I understood what was happening in the mission xD
7:45 interesting that Helium3 seems to hint that they were going for a more "realistic" theme to the game at this point of development. Helium 3 is a real life element that is an isotope to (guess what) helium that theorized as potential nuclear fuel source that creates little radiation, and is often featured in scifi as spaceship fuel. Of course in real life it doesn't look like grey metalic rocks so that's why I say "theme", the devs were planning to use real life elements and minerals as stuff for you to mine but at some point decides to use wholly fictional minerals instead, like the good ol' morkite.
Speaking of the tutorial, am I the only one who kinda wishes the Shallow Grotto would be expanded into a full biome? I really like the color scheme. Also, is there still some kind of link between Point Extraction and random dreadnoughts? I’ve seen about a dozen of them, and I think all but one were in PE missions. EDIT: For anyone seeing this comment now, I can confirm through extensive personal testing (and consulting the wiki) that Point Extraction has its own spawn logic for dreads. However, they can only spawn if you’re playing on Haz 3 or below. I guess the devs thought they'd be too punishing on 4/5.
@DRG Historian I was running some greenbeard friends through their 1st few missions, and the 1st refinery mission we did, back to back random Dreads. I also seem to get them more in PE as well
my fellow Americans, epilepsy warning at 44:03-44:22 and 44:39-44:51 might be a bit intense too (im not from the us) updated: starting from Season 2 BET-C and Korlok have a 5% spawn chance, the new robot Nemesis has a 7% spawn chance
I've asked this before, and I'll say it again. Mission. Variations. Search & Extract could be an alternative version of Mining Expedition, without taking up an entirely new mission slot. Purely the only difference would probably be cave gen, or for a newer mission like Escort Duty, instead of refueling, you have to replace Doretta's treads. I swear to Karl I'm onto something here.
I want an escort variation where the target is something other than a heartstone as i find that event to be the most repetitive part of the entire game
@@randomwowjunkie i know this is a year old, but that would really fit for escort. i mean, mission control says “ *this time* you’re after the heartstone” right? it makes sense that the drilldozer would have other high value things to collect
The only thing that I would change about this game is secondary mission. Instead of collecting a set minimum amount of a thing with no bonus for extra, you have a thing to collect and you get an increasing reward per thing collected, with no limit.
Especially with disteriom secondary or fester flea secondary because you get so much disteriom and it fells like i accidentally kill fleas more often than not but saying that i am a lok engineer so i cant say much
You do get extra XP for overtime, like depositing extra morkite or dystrum or killing more flees. It's usually very little, but you can tell the difference with dark morkite on a long morkite mission. My main gripe is that it doesn't show extra progress in the UI. It would be nice to see if I killed 13/10 fester flees, or collected 350/200 morkite.
Just did a 400 morkite mission with dark morkite, took almost an hour but did give over 20k XP. No idea how much morkite we deposited; my guess is around 800.
Ive been making a dumb little dnd spacehulk abomination for a drg type game. just with some 5e rules and some timers for flavor, but i hadn't a clue what to do for their abilities, with your video ive been slowly but surely breaking down each move into more interesting things for the boss monsters. gj man.
I remember when I first picked up Deep Rock just before the full release. The game had such a great charm back then, and its come such a long way. I love this game, and I look back on those days fondly.
42:01 So that’s where they got the idea for the Drillevator’s dense rock phases. Amazing to see how many ideas they keep recycling between updates! Also, when “Deep Scan Evolution”?
I still really miss the old cave generations that gave fortune to the search & extract mission type. It frequently featured the cave as ginormously sprawling like the example shown; open stretches of multi-layered caves, pillars, plateaus, twisting tunnels, mushroomed faux cave floor, no central cave, entirely non-linear. While yes, Egg hunt has since replaced it, I still liked Search & Extract more, and think they could have balanced it closer to a mix of Mining Mission & Point Extract with chunks to find; Instead of knowing exactly where the eggs where, you really did have to search and explore for all that morkite hidden away in walls.
It’s amazing to see how this game made such subtle variations in builds over its YEARS of development, the entire time I was watching this video I was thinking “oh this is the part where they stopped changing [this]” only to hear “then in update [number] they changed [this]” and I have to double take. DRG really has aged well, it deserves its rising popularity after all the time and love its developers have put in. Also, it’d be amazing if there was a Caretaker-esque fight called ‘Queen Hunt’ where you have to actually “hunt down” a constantly moving giant enemy, and follow the visible aftermath of its rampage. Dead dwarves who failed to kill it, broken MULEs, and even Drop Pods busted open after their occupants tried to escape. It’d really change the tone of “We’re badass dwarves who can kill anything!” to “Oh god, whatever the hell this thing is is something I do *not* want to see”. You never find the Queen, but maybe it could be a chapter-based system like Deep Dives where you do all the search and rescue stuff, but the players are in a darker environment, everything feels unnatural, and there’s evidence of something *big* being nearby. That, or it’s an advanced mission based on the Haunted Cave modifier, where something you’re incapable of fighting is chasing you and you have to rush through the mission before it kills you.
Oh, yeah the normal Dreadnaught does that. If only one player is up (whether that's just one player, a player with Bosco, or only one person is alive and everyone else is down) it will just stop and roar. Only in that situation, though, and I believe iron will counts as someone being up. The combination of its powerful attacks, decent mobility and speed, extreme aggressiveness and heavy armor make it still the most terrifying of the three options. Hiveguards are slow and manageable, if hellish to your ammo supply; and Twins aren't even full dreadnoughts - I'd describe them as 'pre-dreadnought' seeing as they have regressed physically in order to form into two creatures. The classic continues to be the best. This was _an hour?_ I honestly didn't notice until you pointed out that it was expected people would skip stuff. Amazing work, to make something so engaging like that!
I think a good idea for the Search and Extract thing could be a warning modifier that only applies to Mining Expedition. This could be the first in a line of mission-exclusive warnings.
You did a great job on this video! I don’t know what it is but i enjoy learning and seeing these kinds of evolutions, plus seeing weird obscure stuff. Unrelated but the tutorial biome has always fascinated me, i wish we could play in it
Season 1 made it so escort missions could vary more in length I believe, thus the rooms could be shorter distance from each other and you could reach the ommaran faster.
This rundown of the development of missions really highlights for me how anemic and quaint mining missions now feel. Usually just a linear dive with a fairly straightforward but boring objective. There’s no variation or climax to a mining missions pacing. Compare that to something like salvage operation. I think they could use a sprucing up. I’m not sure how you make mining more exciting so maybe the cave layout could be pushed so navigation is the challenge.
Seeing that mounted turret walker, I kind of want the version of escort where you sit in a mounted turret with unlimited ammo and you have to fight off waves as Doretta refuels herself.
But fr though that mini-molly surrounded by cryomines was a anxiety shot if there ever was one. Only worse thing would be seeing 3 nemesis-s (....nemesi?) Next to a cave full of leeches.
Honestly, I would like a mission type like extermination, a mission where you get only the Nitra that was created when the cave was generated, and the players having to balance their Nitra supply with the amount of time, and enemies, they contend with while in the cave. As for how you would stop said mission from becoming a one stop shop for XP grinders, introduce an XP scaling system and XP cap for the mission, as well as having the mission be more gold and crafting materials poor. Another idea would be a variation of the above extermination mission, but more for credits than XP. The idea would be similar to on-site refining and the early gas extraction of escort duty. The idea would be for 5 gas wells to spawn in a large chamber, players call down gas collectors that pump their individual well into a balloon, before launching said balloon after a certain amount of gas is collected. Each refinery gets 10 balloons before the well is tapped, HOWEVER the refinery attract bugs, and can be attacked and destroyed. A destroyed refinery can not be repaired or rebuilt, nor a new one called down, while a damaged refinery can be repaired. Another mechanic that could be added would be the passive damage that occurs to the refinery while working, similar to the rock crackers, just on a slower scale. Also just to add more player agency, the idea that each refinery can be started and run at different times. So players can choose to defend one refinery at a time, ensuring they get maximum credits, or run all 5 refineries and risk losing one or more.
This was honestly a great video to just have in a small pop up while I was playing other games. Learned a lot about the game's history and I sincerely appreciate the effort put into this video. 10/10 :)
maybe they can bring back Search & Extract as part of a future season, where you have to find a season-specific objective instead of morkite. Would be neat to at least have the name back.
i kinda prefer salvage requiring you to fix up the drop pod. Feels more logical, especially since you only ever see Mini Mules here, whereas the drop pod is in every mission. but on the other hand, Mini Mules are cute and give you free gold & nitra.
7:30 I know they used Squat as a reference for design, there is even pictures ofit in their concept art ....but that is a damned lasgun if ever I saw one! lol
We definitely need more missions, or a least more variations in current ones. I only do escort if I absolutely have to because it takes so fucking long, and getting gas is just a chore. I love mining expedition because it's just that, a expedition. The team is constantly moving and diving deeper and deeper, it feel like an actual adventure. We need more missions that are building around exploration and moving, not just point defense around doretta or the pumpheads.
I remember the time when salvage missions used the advanced tech of bluetooth fuel transfer.
same.
I'm pretty sure the cable is just to keep the dwarves sane - you can disconnect the pod and it's still fine. Dwarves do not believe in Bluetooth.
Lol I remember that stuff. Got into the game just a few months before that was changed.

46:30 the J.E.B. most likely stands for “Jens Emil Bil” as seen in the year 3 art showcase segment (42:58).
that could be the case, the few devs that I asked just told me it was a placeholder, I was 90% sure the entire time that it's an inside joke
fantastic as always :)

perhaps that needs investigating, I recall coming across random dreads multiple times in Refinery too since it shares the same cave type
Maybe it's just since waiting around gets so many more swarms in PE? The swarms you get, the more times that dice roll for it happens.
