It's great to see Roger and get to know his personality a little. I think the questions about the old days will really get him going and he will have fun. We will be able to jog some of those memories that he may not of thought of in a long time.

This series of interviews is fantastic. So glad to see Roger Mayer getting this chance to talk about his history, methods and pedals. Thank you for these videos.

Great interview and fascinating to watch not to mention a great source of information. Not a lot out there about roger and his pedals. Thanks

If he's not, Roger should be in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. I'm lucky to own a few of his pedals - Axis, Octavia and Visage.

I totally agree. He shaped the sound of the "most influential" electric guitarist of all time

Not to bragg but to admire Roger - i have all the rockets and some of them from the earlier era. Classic Fuzz / autograph version is the best thing you can put between your guitar and amp. I have the Voodoo Vibe + too. It is quite a space ship to work with, but it sounds excellent once you get it set.

Fascinating interview very technical and straight to the point great listening to the manufacturers side and designer no bull just says it from a technology point of view.

I've always been interested in Roger's tweaks altering the Vox Wahwah tone sweep. But knowing Roger tuned effect pedals for particular studio tracks explains Jimi's statement that Roger was "the secret" of his "sound"!

I contacted Roger about the supposed incident when Seymour Duncan was backstage at a show on Jimi's '68 tour and brought some pickups he wound and Roger installing them, in turn years later Seymour launches the Jimi Hendrix Signature set based on that supposed isolated scenario. Mr.Mayer stated it was a bogus claim by saying he wouldn't have swapped out pickups in a fully functioning guitar.

I wonder what the pick ups ate based off then? If that's a false claim....

Roger not only sat next to Jimi in the studio when creating but also looked after JImi's guitars on tour, Roger seemed pretty disgusted in his email reply to me about Seymour Duncans false claim that led to a signature pickup, complete disrespect of Jimi's spirit

I have quite the collection of Roger Mayer pedals they are really great and all unique in sound and tone colours. I love the bell air wha and the voodoo vibe plus and also the voodoo 1 I actually have the old synergy series with the voodoo boost and voodoo 1 combined allowing you to mix the two sounds together incredible sound check out Micheal Landou using the voodoo 1 especially when he cranks it at the end of this:

I have been thinking of adding the spitfire fuzz to my collection another great sounding distortion/fuzz from Roger Mayer. Thank you for your contributions Roger and your forward thinking, creative outlook and philosophy of sound.
    Kind regards

Which Fuzz pedal of yours would Jimi use...I have the Dunlop FuzzFace because Ive seen a video of Jimi using it

    • @3rdtonefromthesun

Jimi never used a Dunlop Fuzz Face, they were Dallas Arbiter - often with modified or completely different circuits. Early on in his career they were often hand selected Germanium stock units until Roger came along.
Jimi appeared to be using variations of the Axis Fuzz circuit from around the time of the conception of the Axis Bold as Love album up until around his last run of non-US mainland and European shows. For these he appeared to be using a stock silicon Fuzz Face - notable for their higher gain and harsher biting tone compared to a germanium unit, also for picking up radio interference phenomena, and oscillating with wah pedal when placed afterwards - see Hendrix at the Isle of Wight.
The Axis/‘BoG Fuzz’ (both derivations of the same Helios console pre/amp circuit, including the Octavia) do not suffer from wah interaction problems or radio interference, in essence, it is functionally superior to a stock Fuzz Face and has far more volume boost on tap. However, tonally it is quite different and requires the unit to be run with amplifier that is already breaking up or allow the pedal to push the pre-amp section of the amplifier into breakup.
A lot of people complain about the tone of an Axis Fuzz through a cleanish amp - it can sound harsh, brittle and have a displeasing feel under the fingers.
It’s capable of huge amounts of boost and is somewhere between distortion and fuzz, interacts well with the guitar volumes control and has quite a few different shades of overdrive and fuzz within. A big mistake people often to make with the Axis is to dine the fuzz, this encourages max sustain however you lose all the subtleties and ability to clean up with the guitar volume if you do that, the sweet spot is right on the edge of full blooming fuzz.
I have no doubt in my mind that Jimi was using that variation of Fuzz in his live rig where available - Woodstock and the Band of Gypsys shows are classic examples of this fuzz being used, though Jimi’s base amp tone at BoG was quite different to Woodstock, for a lot of songs there is a more notable dynamic increase in volume when the pedal gets engaged as the amps aren’t breaking up as much (for the most part).
We’ve got to remember not to overlook that he’d tweak his amps and fuzz according to the song he’d playing quite often during the set.
