Fantastically put together and presented video! You have a knack for this and I would not have guessed this was a first documentary style video. Please keep sharing your passion for places!
Peal is iconic in Texas. It reminds me of when I was a kid and going in to old beer joints and dance hall and old men sitting at a domino table with long neck bottles of Pearl sitting on the table. Good memories, except for the smoke.
The Pearl is such a great place to visit, especially during the Christmas season when everything is lit up with Christmas lights! So purdy 🤩 Great video!
Remember "generic" brands in the 80's? Items came in plain white packaging, with the product labelled in black letters. The six pack of "BEER" was actually Pearl.
@SpookYouLaterz I’ve been there once! Got footage and the next week my phone was stolen with the footage on it 🙃 last time I checked there was security but would have to scope it out to see if they’re still there
Developed a fondness for Pearl beer back in ‘72 when, after graduating from high school, went to work at a local furniture store warehouse. Often, after work, I’d be sent done the street to a liquor store for beer. Every time I was told to get Pearl Beer. I liked it and now I think fondly about those days and those old timers I worked with: great no-nonsense guys.
Nice video. But what you didn't cover was that Pearl had its own electric railway for moving around freight and electric railfans visiting San Antonio would flock to the brewery to do some train watching and take photos.
1:36 the born in Germany part of Pearl beer was always the marketing speak. It's pretty much accepted now that Otto "borrowed" the name and recipe from his former employer Greisedieck brewery in St Louis.
One minor correction: the Koehler family name is pronounced KAY-ler.My grandfather and Otto were friends for many years, and my wife's grandfather was the gardener at Otto's home in Monte Vista.
Ah dang, I had double checked the pronunciation on a couple sites, they didn’t have anything to do with Otto though. I’m gonna guess it can be said a couple ways. Thank you for that! By the way, that’s incredible that your grandfather knew him, I’m sure he had a lot of great stories!
In the 60s, my godfather had Pearl beer delivered to his home by Pearl Beer. It would be delivered once a month. Sometimes kegs but mostly cases. As a little kid I thought this was normal and everybody did it. LOL
I asked Hotel Emma to create some sidewalk chalk art, made some posts about it, Pearl started following me...the Juneteenth piece was even covered by the news...only for me to return to work on it the next day and realize they had pressure washed it away. I started to recreate it since there were no signs disallowing chalk art and the hotel had given me permission...well, they threatened to arrest me...over chalk... Multiple times the news has covered my art work only for the city, Centro, VIA, or parks wash it away...generally they wash it away during level 3 drought restrictions...
Wow! I’m sorry you were getting treated that way there, especially if you were given permission then I don’t see why you were even bothered to begin with. I really hope everything gets sorted out in your favor. I’ll check out the news segment if I can find it online, keep me updated as to what is going on. Can you plug your social media links so I can check out your work?
Im old enough to remember when it was a brewery and marveling at its operation ... glad to see it was preserved and reused as something so special
Thanks for the history about the Pearl. I’ll have to go there, next time I’m in San Antonio.
You’re welcome! It’s a beautiful place 🍻

the pearl is dope
_"He drank Pearl in a can and Jack Daniels black. Chewed tobacco from a mail pouch sack..."_
"If that ain't country I'll kiss your ass"
“Had an old dog that was trained to attack….sometimes”

Oh man, yeah I knew going into this that I wasn’t going to be able to cover everything. That’s a really cool fact, thank you for that!
I'm old enough to remember $1.49 six pack cans('78) and wooden returnable case of Longnecks $10+$10 deposit. ('83).

At 1:16 you show a picture of the Lone Star Brewery south of downtown but never mention it.
Ironically Pearl St Brewery in Buffalo is also a historic landmark in the city.

tonight News 4 SA will be covering my latest wrongful ticket..."Possession of a Graffiti Instrument" that instrument of course was chalk...

Why is the video so shaky?
Terrible camera, I just sold it for a better one. Don’t ever buy a camera with no stabilization built in.
She drank Pearl from a can....
talked with Brewmeister in 1973-74 about Southdown taking over, cheapening Pearl
with oversight by chemists. Ruined Pearl's name.
Lock your car in San Antonio it’s very ghetto!!
