    Knew about these studies for quite some time now and I'm still trying to figure out how I could placebo myself into believing I'm on the limitless pills

      I have read recent studies where the patient is explicitly told this is a placebo and they still see a positive impact so it is possible.

      Maybe it's not that hard to trick and the reason why the ones who regressed to their previous performances was not really because they were told that it was a placebo, but because they interpret that in a way that they were just tricked and should be less strong because now they know it's a placebo effect. So instead of trying to keep the mentality that they have everything they need to be stronger, they just accepted some kind of self-fulfilling prophecy.
      Because the truth is that the placebo effect is really strong and still poorly understood. It would have been a good thing if those studies measure their real level of testosterone to see if the placebo also caused a physical effect on the body or if it was really just in their mind. I remember from my class that a professor was showing that, aside from sleeping and eating, the placebo effect was always stronger than any equipment helping to recuperate. Meaning if I'm putting fake compression socks, I'll recover almost as much as someone with real ones, even though we both recover way more than someone not using it.
      So then I was like, well it's not gonna work on me anymore if I know that, but later I hear a doctor/researcher speaking on a podcast about his study on the placebo effect. He was treating a woman who had pain for years (I'm not sure if it was her back or belly), she tried everything to treat her, including real meds, but nothing worked. One day that doctor gave her a pill to treat her pain, BUT he also tells her that's a placebo pill.... and it helped her! She begged the researcher to continue the treatment at the end of the study because it was the only thing working for her. So it raise the question that even if you know this is placebo but still give high hope that it can work, maybe that's enough to trick your mind. I hope we would study the placebo effect more, so maybe we will be able to develop a better control and understanding of our mind and true potential.

    The thing with placebo effect is that when you’re aware of it, I’m unsure wether or not its still working so its hard to placebo ourselves to gain from it

    I work at your local ymca and see this SH-T on a daily basis,, young guys who compare their Pre-workouts post-workout supplements, instead of ACTUALLY learning how to do the lifts correctly ,,STOP trying to do a PR EVERY WORKOUT,, learn how to TRAIN. BUT the social media influence always wins out.

    Ive NEVER felt anything from creatine... Whey protein, BCAA, EAA, some PEDs... Just placebo... I was ALWAYS stronger when i sleept right, ate clean and consistently train

      hahaha you're telling me PEDs does nothing. at least 15 guys in my gym would tell you otherwise in the last 12 months. Yeah, placebo that their lifts increased without any differences in training, sleep, diet etc ahhahahaha

    I think this discussion actually pairs fairly well with the statement from JM. Even though he can't anymore he has become the kind of person that can bench X amount of pounds. Not saying that just anyone can say "oh i'm gonna get a world record today" but the amount of lifting that is a mental game is incredible.

    I take Creatine and a fish oil. I tried everything for extended periods of time. Those 2 were the only ones I noticed a difference on. Test I felt better on, I lost some body fat. But my lifts didn't increase much.

      I will tell you, the only things that work are L-carnitine to increase resistance against lactic acid, meaning doing push ups world record for example, for your muscles to last longer and you not feel exhausted, L-carnitine is an aminoacid from testosterone, so if you have a normal animals food rich diet you will naturally get it, but if you suplement it you will get an extra, creatine to max PRs, it's good to handle the biggest weight volume possible, it lets your muscles be more hydrated and strong, but it doesn't increase your strength, to increase your stregth effort wise, it's good to smell salts and listen to potent music, it doesn't increase strength, but it does make you give your all when lifting. That's the reality of it, anyone telling you the aforementioned things will increase you strength it's straigh up lying, I only use them when I need to, 2 weeks previous normally, I like to stay as natural as possible, but the main reason I don't take them all the time even though they aren't inherently bad, it's because I don't want to alter my body production, for it to go up and down after I go off supplements.

    So, kinda the other side of the placebo question, does that mean that all the supplements and pre-workouts that we find have no effect actually hinder performance? Because the people who take them believe in them. So they should have some positive effect right?

    We need to discuss the issue of people talking about studies, which are clearly not controlled or peer reviewed in any way. There has to be a certain experience in determining what studies have been carried out using the scientific method. Sport sciences are notorious for NOT knowing what it means to control a study in a way that it produces results that are derived form objective observation. That is why this "I know this one study" anecdote is so common. Every single thing you can think of has been "studied". Whether it is a valid study or not is a different matter.

      Most peer reviewed studies are BS, too. That said, it's the best we got to go by. That and personal experience.

      @@le1690 yeah was gonna say, peer review is no guarantee that the study is a good one. In some ways "real world" studies are better as they simulate what is actually going to happen (as opposed to traditional studies which are conducted in a controlled environment). That said, in some ways they are also far worse lol.

    Glad to hear that Dave is calling it what it REALLY is ,, a marketing ploy to lure young athletes into believing that this SH-T actually does something that REAL food doesn't. Creatine ,, the "holy grail" of supplements MAY help a little , lol

      As someone who was young and dumb, I tried all kinds of supplements, and creatine is the only thing that ever made a noticeable difference. For me, anyway.

      @@dadbod488 creatine has pretty strong supporting evidence to say it helps. But the magnitude of effect is pretty small.

      Creatine helped me hit my first plate on bench press when I was a teen and plateaued. It definitely helps but it's nothing that proper nutrition and a calorie surplus couldn't have done.

    Everyone knows that placebo is real, but this discussion is strange. What kinda steroids they were given? I understand concept of the study but it feels kinda lame. Btw all people respond to PEDs not the same. I personally tested nearly all supplements and for training best are:
    Creatine, Citrulline, Acetil l carnitine, Tongkat ali and fish oil

    In my humble opinion, i believe the biggest effect come from the lifters being ‘first time’ users of gear. Steroid virgins, so-to-speak. The exhilaration of “yes…! I’m finally on gear.” “Imma make some big gains now!!” And they train their ass off, (no pun intended, Dave) purely from the excitement.
    I did. I trained harder, I was more excited to watch myself literally change over night. I’m betting a lot of first time gear users were the same way.
    Now, do a study with elite lifters with 10, 20 years of using gear and unknowingly supply them with a placebo. Their mindset won’t change a bit, I’m confident in saying.
    Heck, when I’m on a cycle I forget sometimes to even take a scheduled dose. That’s how little I think about it.
    My 2 cents.

      Creatine is the only thing, besides actual steroids, that made a difference for me. Outside of nutrition and training that is.
