I guess the first time I came across Harry's name it was intertwined with John Lennon's as part of his 'Lost Weekend'. I've always been a huge fan of the Fab Four and so "Pussy Cats" was already on my radar. However it wasn't until I got more and more interested in Harry that I became fascinated with this album.
I don't think it's Harry's best album Some consider it his worst - I don't at all. It has some wonderful moments such as "Don't Forget Me" and "All My Life" (and some less fantastic ones). But it's a very interesting album in terms of where it falls in both Lennon's and Harry's careers.
I've attempted to tell the album's story (albeit briefly in less than 7 mins!). Obviously the excellent "Who Is Harry Nilsson" documentary is already out there but I thought there was a little more mileage in telling this particular story in slightly more detail for fans.
I've used whatever I could get my hands on, all of which exists on the internet already - audio interviews with Lennon and Nilsson, numerous photos, illustrations and short bits of footage.
I did my best with what I had and as you can see I had to be creative sometimes to make it all work! Hope you like it.
NB. Did you know the album was nearly called "Strange Pussies"!
Lennon and Nilsson.. two geniuses, doesn't get any better than that.
This is the most cohesive piece about the Lost Weekend that I've see. Well done.
Ecgwald Thank you :D
This was extremely well done for being something you pulled together, on your own, using only internet sources you had. I loved it, especially all the interviews with John and Harry which I'd never heard before!
Thank you for this, I love anyone who loves Harry and John.
"Don't Forget Me" is one of two songs I can think of that can literally make me cry, and has done so often. It's such a beautiful and heartbreaking song. (For what it's worth, Randy Newman's 'Marie" is the other. )
It would be great to have a full documentary about their relationship, and also about the famous Lost Weekend.
May did a doc about the Lost Weekend, but it was only a limited release in theaters. It came out earlier this year I think.
Thank you for piecing this together... It helps make sense out of that whole "how did Harry lose his voice" mystery. John comes off here being very upfront, honest and caring about his friend. An ultra-interesting chapter.
A screaming contest with John ended up hurting his vocal chords. He never recovered.
The producer no less getting the talent to blow out his million dollar voice. Only Lennon.
Awesome. Going to see, "Everybody's Talkin': The Music of Harry Nilsson" on June 20th in San Diego! Can't wait.
Nilsson was one of the greats. And as fortune has it, the greatest usually go unrecognized by the general public.
This is great. Very well done! Thanks for making this. I just visited Harry's grave a few weeks ago. I happened to be in the area. He was the anti-Rock star. He had the voice and the talent and just had fun. He was a kindred spirit with Lennon. They both even talked alike.
where is he's grave
Great Job!!..I knew this stuff,,but forgot and didn't know..(if you know what I mean) Thanks for putting it together!Barry from NYC...I also met Harry at a "Beatlefest" when he was advocating to end handgun violence due to John Lennons assassination/murder. I asked him "what was Hope Lange really like?" He was confused then realized I was referring to when he guested on "The Ghost and Mrs Muir" He got a chuckle from that and asked to me to sit with him while he signed autographs and took donations for his cause. He was still depressed about John Lennon. I'm glad I was able to give him a laugh for all the joy he brought me!
Barrycomedian1 wow cool story
Yes, so cool. Thanks for sharing that lovely story. Can you imagine living in a beach house with Lennon, Nilsson, Moon and others? Holy cow. Harry was one of my favorites, his voice can make me cry, or it can put me on top of the world. Heaven must have one hell of a rock band.
@@mamaboocee they all would've ran a train on you for sure 🤣
@@cuttinupthecarpet504 I am just not quite sure what to think of your comment. Is it an insult? Some kind of an odd complement in reference to my looks? And that laughing/crying emoji? I was puzzled as to what "ran a train on" meant so I looked it up. I was somehow saddened by its meaning. It gave me a very disappointing mental picture especially with that particular choice of emoji. So unless you have simply used an unfortunate choice of words, or maybe it's a common phrase where you come from or maybe it means something different than what I have found - you should think about this: How would YOU feel if a group of men - famous or not - " ran a train" on your mother, your sister, your daughter, your wife or perhaps YOU. How would that make you feel?
So maybe that was a poor choice of words and emoji, yes?
amazin'
John knew full well how Harry lost his voice. Screaming contest. Always loved the D+rug+S under the table on the cover.
This was amazing, I am a Music documentary nerd, and this is incredibly well done! Great job.
This is gold, thanks. Harry losing his incredible voice was....tragic....
tragic.
Bless you Harry. You left us 15 years ago today but I will never forget the wonderful talks we had at Beatlefest. Thanks for being a compassionate person. RIP
Thank you; have linked the video around to fans. Sure miss that musical genius. And John, too.
This is really great. Feels like a small taste of the atmosphere that was
Very, Very well done. I thought it was a bonus on a remaster or something. You fooled me. Awesome job! Thanks very much!
Very very good job, man. So nice to see all these things together from that period, from that album. Always loved Pussy Cats (as you can see on my profile picture ;-)
Thanx a lot for sharing.
Thank you :)
Philippe ETZI Awesome picture Philippe :)
This is great. Never knew this video existed and this is one of my go to vinyls that has been played dozens of times now.
The lost weekend is one of the most intresting subjects still steeped in mystery in John's life
Fantastic mini doc! clap clap clap clap!
Thank you very much....a most entertaining 6 mins & 52 secs. Knew about the album but didn't know much.....other than the word DRugS is spelt out on the front cover 🤔 if you look carefully. Please do. More.
Great Video. I bought this album when I was in school in Chicago. It's still my favorite Nisson record after 'Schmilsson'. I hated the cover but great album. The covers were well chosen. Originals "Don't forget Me" & :Black Sails" are very underrated. This would make a great biopic. Harry's vocals add a morning after weariness.
Great job with humorous edits that certainly are appropriate when you're telling tales of the Lost Weekend! Thanks for the time you spent creating! You just gave a fun 7 mins to this fan of both those dear, departed Pussy Cats
Wow.
Love the pix, audio, editing!!!!
The whole damn thing!!
I have the orig LP, right when it came out.......
Wow! For an “unofficial” documentary, there’s a great wealth of clips and research that went into this. Great work!
Excellent job! Thanks so much for sharing this.
Wonderful, disastrous. Thanks so much for creating/posting this. I've subscribed.
I always love hearing them talk it makes me smile and there music is amazing!!:) thanks !!
Darren Dutton; great job and you´ve done justice to an awesome underrated album!
Aneeta TV Thank you for watching!
Wow.. Never saw this before. In your description you detailed what was, no doubt, a painstaking process to put this together, and I commend you for that. I used to have a Beatle channel and do edits to their songs, so I know what a job good editing can be. Thank you for taking the time to do this and for honoring Harry's talents and legacy through your channel. 😊
this is so, so good. Great work!
You really hade your hands full by making this.very well done mr.
must have been in another universe lol he was 34 i guess
Beautifully made.....thanx so much !
That was amazing! Great edit well done!
I am so grateful that John and Harry were such great friends. They had each other and it does sound like they were the best friends either had ever had.
They weren't best friends at all and as a matter of fact aside from when John was on his 18 month separation from Yoko is the most time they spent together . From 1974 to John's death they never saw each other . Plus the fact John didn't even go to Harry's wedding . Ringo was Harry's best friend it's a known fact and even was his best man at Harry's wedding.
@@cuttinupthecarpet504 then howcome all you ever hear about it “John and Harry “ this “John and Harry “ that?? I’ve never even heard about he and ringo being friends.
Look it up . As a matter of fact go and watch "everybody's talkin about harry" it's free on TH-cam. Even Ringo when asked who is the one person you can always depend on he said without a second thought harry nilsson. John in his last interview in 1980 even says he has not seen or heard harry in years and doesn't even know where he is . They were never best freinds aside from the lost weekend . John lennon said he had to break all ties with harry because he partied too much . They never even spoke on the phone ever again from 74 to John's death .
@@cuttinupthecarpet504 oh. Ok well more i know. Obviously the media and what I’ve seen gave me the wrong idea. Lol
@@EphemeralProductions if you like Harry Nilsson you gotta see that documentary it's amazing . I was wrong on the title it's called..." who is Harry Nilsson and why is everyone talking about him" the documentary covers everything and explains alot.
I really enjoyed this! Thanks for doing it!
I wasn't aware before that McCartney had any involvement in this. Interesting trivia learned from this video.
John and Paul recorded an album at that time "A toot and a snort." Jam session
@@larl7551 hardly an album, more coke fuelled nonsense
@@lennon911 Still fun knowing they were together.
That's really well done. 👍
Thank you!
I love this album. I purchased it in 1974. Still got it.
excellent. thankyou for that (am reading the nilsson bio)
NICE TO SEE THESE PICTURES!!!
Great story ! I enjoyed it ! Thanks !
very entertaining really good to watch, well done!
This was GREAT!!! Bravo!!!!
This was good. Thank you.
This is a fantastic doc! Well done man!
Took Years but I finally found the Pussycats album. Have transferred it over to CD since then. If you give it a chance, it is a pretty good release.
I find Nilsson’s story endlessly fascinating - such a talented guy, but also such a self-sabotager. But, I adore the honesty of his music - Don’t Forget Me is a heart-rending song! For some more insight into the Lost Weekend, I can recommend Living The Beatles Legend by Kenneth Womack - based on Mal Evans’ unpublished memoirs. Mal was there, a good friend of John, Ringo, Moonie and Harry, and former Beatles’ road manager.
On the cover of the album, notice the kids blocks with D and S with the "rug" in between. Lennon, Star, Moon, and Nilsson. Surprised they didn't get each other killed.
And I love the finished product ,.......
That was very good, thank you.
Your music has lasted this long ! Time will not forget you
Great job! Thanks for this.
Very nicely done, thank you
Thank you :)
Harry Nilsson Archive Your most welcome
Fantastic upload.
"Any fucking man. Let's go."
:)
"When in doubt - f**k it!!!"
Love this.
good job, squire!
Thank you!
This proves to me how much John Lennon liked Paul McCartney's music but couldn't admit it. Who was Nilsson channeling if not McCartney?
himself maybe?
We all must pass.....great songster. Harry channeling Harry too, tough times to draw from like John's Auntie..
Sorry but NO. Got that backwards.
Nope, Lennon knew the difference between a genius and nursery rhymes 😂
Harry was Harry. Unique. Paul is also unique
Lost weekend needs to be a movie
Nice job - thanks much
great video! the only gripe is i wished you showed the commercial somewhere in there
A true fan here
Nillsson..One the great singers of his time..Just looking at his face when he was much younger makes you know he had a tame and gentle soul. Ive been wondering...were the tragic suicides of the 2 badfinger guys who wrote his hit ¨without you¨ had any impact on how he led his life until his death?
Andy M I don't know for sure but Harry lost a lot of his friends and colleagues in the intervening years - Keith Moon, John Lennon etc - and that must have affected him very deeply. Whilst I think he eventually ditched the drugs in the 80s, the alcohol was never very far away.
Harry Nilsson Archive Thanks! I was in grade school in the 70's when he was quite popular then here in my country...together with the Hollies, Procol harum, etc. (Beatles too - but overrated)
Andy M The Beatles overrated, good joke clown.
loved this and love John and Harry
This is so good
Well done!
thanks for the video
this its awesome dude....thanks,,
Excellent! nice post.
2:03 " i ended up doing Harry" 🤣
Amazing ~ thank you !
Not a favorite album of mine by any means. This however, is a fantastic video! Thanks for your work!
Great job.
Thank you :-)
¡Magnífico!
i listen to pussycats every day........since i was eight......when it came out....vinyl and eight track
On the front cover there is a D one side of the rug and S on the other.
Work it out folks.
Surprised the record company didn't notice.
My biggest regret re: this video is not including that fact. I knew it, I just forgot to mention it. Dammit!
Amazing🔥🔥💯💯🔥🔥💯💯
Well done
Cheers, thanks for watching
I really want to know more about that seemingly really fun period.
From the lennon side you can read May Pang's book "Loving John". It covers the recording of this album and their time living together. I liked it.
I´m thinking of taking away the stuff from the studio where I´m recording my 3rd album, because we´re procrastinating and mixing too much and wasting too much time and we don´t seem to be able to advance anymore. Tough times, let me tell you...
this is really good
Awesome! :)
I never knew this story about Harry that he lost his voice for good
ACE MATE JOB MATE , LOVED IT!.. HAVE A BANANA!
Good doc!
Imagine being there and partying with them ?.. look at the lineup ..all these people and picture them getting crazy and drunk :
John Lennon Alice Cooper, Harry Nilsson, Micky Dolenz , Ringo Starr, Keith Moon... probably a few others I can't if..oh yeah one of the Hudson brothers.. and he tells a story about this but I can't find the vid.
Note the rug its got the block on each end D rug S may pang said brilliant
Was that house 461 Ocean Boulevard?
Is that Jesse Ed Davis????????????????????????????????? sitting behind HN and JL
Daniel Coffey At 3:00, yes, that’s Jesse Ed Davis
I echo Digger's comments of two years ago - this tells the sad tale of the Pussy Cats period very well. It's a great album but Harry paid such a high price to do it. I had not previously realised that Paul McCartney joined the sessions briefly - did anything of his end up on the final record?
No, it exists as a bootleg called “toot and a snore in 74”
@@rockohale9858 Thanks for this. In the intervening years between posting my comment and now I've actually heard the 'Toot and a Snore' - it's pretty dreadful eh!😁. I always wished that Paul and Harry would have written together at some point but that wasn't going to happen and maybe for the best...
@@Robutube1 oh yea, it’s godawful and more Nilsson is needed
Thanks
I never understood the meaning of the two blocks under the table, D & S
There’s a rug in between the d and the s... drugs
Name a more iconic duo.
AWESOMENESS...
awesome!
Good doc.
Triple eights --don't want to mess that up. Let this comment serve as a well-deserved Thumbs Up!
