Some people think this song is schmaltzy, treakley, cheesy...etc. But, it is one of the most beautiful moving songs ever written. It can make a lump in my throat.
That's true. But in my opinion original Jimmy Webb's version the most sensitive. With all respect to Glenn Campbell. It's like with "Livin' On A Prayer". Bon Jovi did really good job but Desmond's original just on the other level to me.
I love this. My favorite Stipe cover. And, no, it is not studio perfect. That is what makes it heartfelt and touching. It is beautiful, because it is genuine. Stipe is wonderful, and Patti, a legend!
The two of them dancing during the solo was one of the purely sweetest things I have seen in long time. He missed his cue ... big deal, it was a tender moment.
Truly excellent! Jimmy Webb songs is a great songwriter & as always Michael Stipe knows how to do any song justice. It was a loving, touching tribute obviously dedicated to a friend.
Jimmy Webb wrote some amazing songs, e.g. Galveston (one of the great songs about war). With Wichita Lineman, writer Jimmy Webb, performer Glen Campbell and producer/arranger Al De Lory left Earth’s orbit. I was probably around 12 years old when I first heard it and it still packs the same punch as it did to my 12 year old mind in 1968. It is one of those rare moments (that were amazingly not so rare for Webb and Campbell) when the perfect performer gets matched with the perfect song and the perfect arrangement. I can think of no song that captures loneliness, longing and unrequited love any better. With all respect to other performers/ writers, the 60’s to early 70’s was a sweet spot in the history of popular music.
I NEVER thought Patti Smith would "choke" me up! I need her to stay, "forever young", raunchy, how I too, REALLY AM AT THIS AGE...not sedate and ready for "cosy" ! Namaste
Imagine attending a Patti Smith concert (which is already awesome as hell) these days, and then suddenly there's Michael fuckin' Stipe. Who officially retired. Good lord, what a bunch of lucky people in this room.
He came out when she played on her birthday last December in Chicago. It was such a thrilling, remarkable evening. They brought out a cake for her and we all sang happy birthday to her, then they did the second half of the show. Fuckin' chill-inducing and breathtaking.
Saw them both on the same stage once (but not together) at a Jewel Heart fundraiser in maybe 1994. Allen Ginsburg was there, too, and maybe Grant Hart, though that might have been a different year. Smith and Ginsburg were almost always present until Allen moved on.
I just love this video. Michael Stipe ruling once again. Oh and yes, he really does look a lot like Bill Murray from The Life Aquatic movie LOL. Great stuff! Thank you for uploading!
Got to have the BassVI or a Baritone set up to do this right. The Strat on the right looks like a custom 28/30" scale. It's actually a solid riff to do repetitive variations on; it can be a easily turned into many diiferent things, instead of just a cover so people don't forget about it. It looked like they didn't have much time to work anything out.
"And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time..." One of the best lines ever written in my opinion.
BoutYoungAnnaLee Amen!
Absolutely!
You missed a word out
@@StratsRUs Still got a shit ton of likes!
BoutYoungAnnaLee Yes , and a fact.

This is one of the greatest American songs ever written, and anybody who does "Americana" music should try to cover it.
That was a beautiful moment. Thank you, Jimmy Webb.
Once again shows the respect across all genres that Glenn Campbell had from everyone. 💜
I love this. My favorite Stipe cover. And, no, it is not studio perfect. That is what makes it heartfelt and touching. It is beautiful, because it is genuine. Stipe is wonderful, and Patti, a legend!
I also liked his cover duet with Natalie Merchant "To Sir With Love"
He's still got a voice like a warm hug. I miss rem. I miss my youth when I was so excited by discovering rem and other amazing bands
I just love Patti's face here at the end. That is pure love.
The two of them dancing during the solo was one of the purely sweetest things I have seen in long time. He missed his cue ... big deal, it was a tender moment.
One of those truly magic moments. Thank you that those of us that weren't there could share this.

Awww. I love this song.
I love the look he gives her after he salutes the crowd as he is leaving the stage. Pure adoration and love..
So trus, Michael has been a fan of Patti's since he heard her album Horses back in the 70s.
My favorite Glen Campbell song sung by my favorite singer!
I don't find it awkward at all. Just very personal and honestly fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to post it!!!!!

Can you imagine being in the crowd and Michael Stipe reluctantly strolls out on stage and drops this...

Oh, she's so happy... It's so beautiful!!!
shivers as soon as Michael Stipe started to sing.
you shiver easy, very average singing here.
@@chriswesterfield2042. . . ‘Karaoke’ - at best . One of so many who simply can not sing .
the kiss at the end made me cry.
This is a perfect song, no matter who sings it ❤
Beautiful version.
The quality of the song❤

Yeah and then they play Glynn Cambell’s Wichita Lineman 😃

beautiful song
lindo vídeo. música imortal, que canja sensacional. parabéns pela postagem.
Beautiful song!
Simply beautiful
So magnificent and magical
always great live, they should get back and make another album :-)
great cover
These people wouldn’t be covering Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell if it wasn’t a masterpiece of songwriting.
Musicians who are any good at all are like intermediate painters emulating the masters, they know what is really good
Michael Stipe's voice is perfect for rendering this great song.
I love them so and they love each other so.. 💕😍💕

Classic! Patti is awesome as always.
OMG Michael Stipe is the luckiest guy in the world! Beautiful song too :)
why so lucky?
@@chriswesterfield2042 Cuddling and kissing her
checking out of the different artist that loved this great classic by Glenn Campbell
By Jimmy Webb you mean.
And Patti Smith is just georgous🙏
Stipe l'ineguagliabile. Troppa nostalgia di lui, troppa nostalgia dei REM, MERAVIGLIOSAMENTEUNICI ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Outstanding
I cry a little every time.
Yeah...that's about as deep as a friendship gets :-)
I think Stipey boys voice is perfect for this song. The isolation of the narrator is perfectly captured by Stipes pained undertone.
Excellent!
@tahoemud93 my pleasure! great memories of the night...
Excellent
God, that was nice...
And i need you more than want you and i want you for all time !
Awesome!
@DarkDavie i actually did NOT know; thanks for the heads up! very cool!
Funny, but musicians knew what spectacular guitar player Glen really was
Funny as in odd? Not sure why that’d be the case at all.
thank you captain obvious
Lenny Kaye and Michael Stipe on the same stage. Awesome.
Wow!
🕯🕯🕯
Bob Dylan once called it the greatest song ever written.
Hello Patti❤
sweet pipes
BRASIL I LOVE R.E M THE BEST 😍😍😍

I like it but wish the crowd would shut the hell up.
drunk NYC crowd, shouldn't expect nothing less.
I was just going to type that then saw your post.
Would like to hear this without all the background noise. Sounds great anyway
Thank you so much for posting this - one of the show's highlights. Does anyone know the song title?
@REMCUREBOY n.p. thanks for looking!
I knew,it!
the johnny cash version is good too --- thanx to creation , nature, music and artists
Love David Cronenberg!!
Really should have upped Mike’s voice in the mixed or toned the instruments down some.
He has a lovely voice.

Oh - it's "Wichita Lineman" written by Jimmy Webb and performed original by Glen Campbell.
Check the Glen Campbell and STP version.........
Yes! The best most moving version.
Did they ever do this song on a album (c/d) ?
REM did it. It´s a B-side for Bittersweet Me.
