D5 owner here (3 liter turbo diesel). I’ve tried so hard to like the defender. But its just not for me. The more I look at it the less I like it. Just doesn’t have the space in the boot I’m used to. I’m an avid golfer and. Keep a load of “stuff” back there. Im also not a fan of the swing open tailgate on the Defender. The overhead gate in the D5 is so nice when raining and I love the drop down “tailgate” in the D5. I sit there when I’m changing shoes at the course and sometimes use it for a work station for tools if I’m on a project. Most of all I just don’t like the defender’s interior at all. The D5 has many hidden compartments which I love. Whereas a lot of those areas in a defender are just open. I think one of those little dash “ledges” In front of the passenger is pointless. I never liked that in the little Discovery sport I had. It seems unfinished and cheap. Also the open center console on the defender to me is just weird. I guess one would need to stick a basket of some sort in there to actually hold stuff in place. Also when I first saw the defender I really liked the looks of it … but the more I look at it the less I like it. For some reason it looks kind of like a Honda Element where the rear end was sliced off like a block of cheese. I think if the wheel wells on the defender were a larger diameter then it would help. A lot of folks think the the D5 doesn’t look rugged enough but once a set of All Terrain tires go on it, then the looks become more aggressive and balanced in my opinion. Folks running a D5 around on 18” street tires don’t help the looks. LOL Lastly, I think I would really miss the fuel efficiency and torque of my turbo diesel if I switched to a defender. In the USA we don’t have a diesel option for the Defender. (Not sure if that is the case globally).
Thanks for your comment M Hendrix- really appreciate your perspective. I like the look of the D5 despite what everyone says but to be fair I also like the new defender looks wise. Thanks for watching!
On configuration mode I see the price is very expansive so from my friends here in Italy hearing that is a nice car but much electronic problems…… I need think if is like to swap that from my old Discovery 3 27td so now have 16 years old…..
Go for it get the Defender. I had a new discovery 5 in 2017 for 2 years and had many problems with it so I changed to a BMW X6 for 12 months.after watching videos and reading good reviews on the new Defender. I decided to purchased one and have had it 8 months now it’s absolutely amazing and lives up to all what people say on TH-cam as we’ll the good reviews.
I'd never swap a Discovery for a Defender, never. The Defender is less in 90% of the areas. I've checked in detail inside out and test drove both earlier this year (you've guessed, I've opted for the disco and it was totally a no-brainer) and I can not honestly understand why would anyone opt for a Defender. Unless you REALLY like the looks but is that a good reason really? Will you spend your time sitting outside the car looking at it?
Thansk for the comment Marco- it’s a great point and I do agree in some parts with the design and finish quality. Hoping defenders will drop in price next year when demand drops
@@thedoctorsgarage here in South Africa they more expensive than a brand new defender and same price as discovery. But there's so few of them anyway so
I was never taken by the D5 and the direction Land Rover have taken the Discovery. So I am currently running a D4 HSE and will keep this until the used market for the new Defender settles down. I 100% see the new defender as what the Discovery should have been after the D4 and it will be my next car I hope 🤞
I own a 22 defender and have driven a 22 disco as a loaner for about a week. The defender feels more like a truck when driving as it has a more upright driving position. The disco feels more like a small SUV/car and is less noisey on the highway. The defender has MUCH better brakes and acceleration, at least in the P400. Bottom line is the defender is so much more comfortable and fun to drive but I wish it had the paddle shifters found on the disco.
Great overview, move the discovery on, hold until used prices lower on the Defenders, alternatively wait for a new one. Nice drone footage in this one, would be interesting to see your tech set up for the videos, short or full video.
Thanks mate- would be great to sell the D5 and wait but other half isn’t too keen on going in to winter in the TD5 90 😂 re: tech setup that’s a good idea - I don’t use a lot but if there’s interest happy to share!
Upgrade for sure doc. I think both are great cars but love the new defenders. I think 4 engine choices for it a little excessive but welcome the options. I'll be getting one when the wait times aren't 12 months here in Australia.
With the amount of R&D that went into the new Defender, that is the clear winner. Nevermind safety, emissions etc. I'm also keen to see what Thierry will do regarding reliability at JLR since he's apparently revolutionising design-led reliability so the newer models should be better.
Had a similar choice. Sold our late 2016 D4 landmark for what we paid for it, but went for a new D5 delivered this month. Upgrades over previous D5 including new engine look and infotainment syste really make a difference over older D5, and a much nicer car in terms of comfort, luxury, practicality and to our eyes style over the Defender. On 22" wheels looks terrific and so smooth to drive.
My wife wants to buy a used 2018 discovery 5 HSE with the TD6 3.0 diesel. Looks well maintained but I’d get the extended warranty. What should I look out for? Are we walking into trouble?
I think a defender would be fun to try especially if you've tried that disco life already. You can always go back to a disco for the next one if it doesn't work out
Amazed your experience with Discovery hasn't put you off the whole brand. Even if it is under warranty, doesn't stop the pain of breaking down, trips to the garage, courtesy cars being dogs, etc.
Thanks for the comment Mark- I still love LR despite the issues I’ve had- I do think the 2018 models particularly the 2L had the majority of issues engine wise. Hoping this is fixed with the new engine line up….
As I wrote before the initial engine choice was a mistake. I've taken my D5 with 3.0L petrol and there are no issues at all. It is the best engine in LR lineup. A pricier option though times more reliable. I wish they didn't discontinue it with the restyle model. I do agree with every word regarding Defender being more what we expected from Discovery 5. I have nothing against D5's interior and comfort but I expected much more ruggedness in terms of its chassis. Though I watched and read some reviews and LR did a very sloppy job protecting all the wiring, electronics and mechanical parts underneath the new Defender as well. There is a lot of space for improvement. To be honest I like what Toyota Land Cruiser and Jeep did with some of their models. Toyota created GR sport trim and Jeep has Trailhawk version for years. I would also prefer to buy more off-roadish edition of D5 (SVX, G4, anything) as the main reason why I haven't bought any of the competing vehicles is my desire for adventure.
Thanks foe the comment Yevhen- I think you are completely right - all the issues seem to be associated with the 2L engine. I have actually sprayed Lanoguard all over the underside of my D% this winter the same as my old Defender as it does have some surface corrosion!
No as I've seen 2 new defenders being picked up on a recovery truck on the A1 M in the last 3 weeks. (Broken down) normally it's a BMW on the side of the road...
Hi, I am in the same situation with my 2018 SE D5, although following a new 2.0 L engine + 2x new turbos 10k miles ago, a new speaker, DEF sensor issues and now a lifting windscreen I have fallen out of liking my black pack D5. The Dealership in the NE of Scotland, (not going to name) has not helped and now I have water ingress and electrical issues from the known windscreen fault (apparently not covered by warranty) which will be settled via 'good will' from LR UK. I am pretty much done with it after 33k, based on concerns for longer term owernship, rising costs and the above issues. I just hope they have sorted out simple reliability issues in the newer face lifted D5 including a sealing windscreen, better NOx / DEF sensors and an engine that doesnt kill itself. I cannot bring myself monetary-wise and also practically-wise to move to a new Defender, the D5 is sleak, fuel efficient and spacious... lets see how the next few weeks go with my dealer and LR UK!
Thanks for your comment - wow sounds like a lot has happened with your D5 and it's not been handled well overall... I think it was the 2018 2L engine that had a lot of problems- I have had a new engine but not turbos....yet
@@nikola2georgiev yes, I have the 2.0 L 240BHP diesel. I had a new engine after 21k, one turbo was full of metal fragments / oil and the second was whining, thankfully all changed under warranty by the dealer. I have put 12k on the new engine and no complaints so far
@@OutdoorandOffroad That’s scary. I have a RRSport with that same engine but MY 17. I’m no more under warranty. 74k km and no issues so far, just came back (Belgium) from a 11k trip in Turkey, Georgia, Armenia and Ukraine. Hope it won’t brake as I love my car ….
@@nikola2georgiev you might be lucky as I am lead to believe it is 2018 engines that had most issues. I love my D5 too but can’t live with the mounting issues and hope I can trade for a new one!
I have a Disco 4 and have looked at a 5 and found that the angle of the A pillar was wrong for me so i would probably go for the Defender it more like the Disco 4, I also have a 3 which has done 255,321 miles with no engine problems
I ordered, MY2021 Discovery 3L, I tried new Defender, it’s a bit overpriced and a bit firm for me comparing to Discovery. You will probably should get a Defender. 2L Discovery without warranty it’s a gamble. Defender is a new model, and if you don’t mind the suspension and can get a good deal for your Discovery, just do it! However try to aim new RR, this would be a much better swap.
New RR is so nice but it’s 100k and the demand will be so high I think when it gets released. I agree the 2L is a gamble- seems to be a lot of problems with that engine (had to have a new engine in mine!)
Never tried either but for me, from the outside, the Defender looks far nicer. Still can’t get on with the Disco 5 tailgate offset on the number plate.
Thanks for the comment David - the offset plate is a real problem for a lot of people- I have seen you can get a centre alignment kit from startech to centre it!
yeah, I really wanted to get a Defender when it came out and test drove them, but if you spec them with the same power plants, similar tires etc. the Disco gets better mileage, is quieter, has slightly better interior materials (subjective), has more cargo room and a better lift-gate with a drop down platform for sitting on during ski season. for me the Disco made more sense. Plus I did the swing gates with tires "thing" in the 90's and I think I'm over that. ;)
I have had 7 discovery's and now on my second defender ..no brainer....the defender is so much better to drive, more fun and I am hooked....I do off road in the winter and it is perfect...short wheel base has no boot space ...go for the 110...I lost £3k on the last one over 2 years ...
If you like the new defender just order it, best car I’ve ever had. All the negative comments are from people who haven’t got one, “my neighbours/friends/work colleague has had problems etc etc , blah blah” not had a single problem with mine, and I’ve got the p300 (p400 was 8 grand more) plenty quick enough, if I stay under 70mph I’ve had 30mpg out of it(I changed oil at 7000 miles, this seemed to improve mpg) I use it for work as a tradesman, regularly carrying 300kg of tools and crap in the back, I’ve taken it on off road days, you can hose and wash out the inside, then at wk ends it’s a comfortable refined car, spec it properly, no leather, wood trim etc and there’s nothing out there like it. By Not having a transit and separate car, I’ve actually saved a fortune getting it.
Is it true the 2019 discovery’s have had a lot less issue vs the 2018’s? Every used Discovery I drive that is 2019 is in significantly better shape than the 2018 for some reason.
Another cracking video!! I was thinking new Defender before going with my Discovery 5. The big thing for me is the 7 seats. I use them regularly with all my daughters clubs and friends. The Defender 7 seats just appear much smaller. I'll be waiting for the new Range Rover 7 seater before upgrading. I would definitely have a Defender as a second car but can't justify the price of Defender for second car at the moment so Discovery 4 it will be till it dies.
Thanks Stuart- appreciate the comment. The Discovery as a 7 seater is incomparable I think- it's a real beast. I have a feeling next summer new defender prices will drop a lot on the second hand market
I’d say swop it in. The new “Defender” is what traditionalists wanted from a Discovery so it makes sense when viewed from that angle. It’s definitely not a replacement for the original Defender. You’d have to get a Grenadier for that…
For me being someone who used to work on land Rovers I would not be buying anything new, especially now I have given up working in a garage and no longer have access to the specialist equipment I know how expensive it all gets.. I would stay away from the new Defender as I have seen just as many on the back of a break down truck as I have seen driving around since I moved back to the UK
I couldn’t afford either a new defender or a discovery 5 and wanted the best of both worlds so I bought a D4 V8 5.0 litre 7 seater and kept my Defender Td5 110! In your situation and having driven both as well it’s perfect to say that you swap! But get the V8 !!
@@thedoctorsgarage thanks and they have a 1976 Series 3 SWB 2/25 petrol for company which is undergoing a good engine rebuild hopefully be back on the road soon!
I think the new on isn't a replacement for the old but a more modern alternative for lager drives/a lot of stuff in the boot etc. The TD5 90 is actually quite a small car space wise inside
Head says disco as it’s a car that can do everything. Pull a trailer of hay across a farm then rock up at posh restaurant and it blends in with a Range Rover. However my heart says defender as it just looks amazing and has all the defender heritage and yes it can do all the above, but it’s still stereotypically an agricultural truck no matter what size alloys go on it.
I totally agree that the new defender exterior design, should more or less of been the Disco 5. With that said, I drove both when deciding which to order, and I opted for the Defender. Surprisingly, the main reason, the way it drove! I found it had less body roll, and a smother ride. I also haven't the need for seven seats and the sheer volume of the Disco, and really like its interior and exterior design. My only niggles are the rear hung spare wheel, I know its part of the look, but I would sooner not have it, and linked to that, I would prefer a more practical top hung tail gate. Ive had my one on order for about 2 months, and yet to get an official delivery date or even guesstimate. If anyone has any incite to when I'm likely to take delivery? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks for the comment Shep- interestingly I agree the body roll is much less on the defender - the D5 definitely has more of a boat feel about it. I have no idea about delivery times but seen some say mid 2022 for orders made end of this year (6-9months delivery)
New defender... However, it is gen1 so teething/reliability issues will most likely exist. So its gonna be rolling the dice 🎲 yet again. Btw how is the ride quality vs the disco5?
To be honest Ali ride quality is very similar to the D5. I guess you feel a bit make upright in the defender like the old D4 but it’s very similar in regards to smoothness
I like the Defedner however, I think for your sake its best to stay put with your Discovery unless you really really love the defender. I could be wrong. 🙂
I am confused. Defender was historically a step below Disco and more utilitarian. Now it’s same as or more money, less luxury and less utility (in terms of internal size). 🤨 Ok much more fashionable but like Mercedes G Wagon, it’s lost its real identity is now later day Sloane Ranger. I’m very happy with my D5 3ltr HSE and a,so my mush older D2.5 Pursuit (runout model)… paying £70 for a 4x4 is crazy… but happy for LR if it brings in the money to keep it alive.
Thanks Peter - with how th market is right now and from what people say I would try and hold out for 6 months or so until prices get back to normal- I know I will be waiting
Hi, still doing my research, went to dealer and took out 2020 D5, SE but lots of options, here is $85k AUD .. I liked it but similar defender spec is $15 k more.. I am drawn to Defender more for some reason, D3 /4is just soo good
Hey - having exactly this conversation with myself. Have a two yr old X5 which I love, it's a very good car.... but borrowed a 110 defender for a day a liked it, liked it a lot, got under my skin much more than expected. If I could get a new defender without having to wait forever I'd change but because I can't I probably won't. Good luck!
I’m currently going though a similar dichotomy, I have an LR3 and looking to modernise. I look at the latest disco and think it has more comfort, more boot space, more functional boot opening facility (I really don’t like the side opening door of the defender though I think it looks streets better than the stupid off-set single line number plate of the latest discovery from the back), is generally cheaper and more available than a new Defender. Decision made! Not so fast! I need a utilitarian vehicle to go off road, master soft sand and launch a boat on a shallow incline beach! Yes I know a tractor would be the answer! But I don’t want the hassle of having more vehicles to maintain in a roadworthy condition! I look at both and ask would I reverse either of these vehicles into the sea? Even if it is no where near their wading capacity! The answer is no, if I look to keep the vehicles for any length of time! Does anybody know where I can get a cheap tractor?
I was looking at the disco 5. After speaking to numerous owners (I was in Scottish land rover owners club) and hearing about the reliability I got a VW t6 camper as my car and the wife leased a Ford Ranger wildtrack. The ranger is due for replacement so I was looking at Landy again. Every model seems riddled with issues. Landy have never been known for reliability but the price point they have now is far to high for such poor quality. I've no idea what to get but thinking of Volvo for me and wife likes Cupra.
Good looking. Too many electronics and air suspension for serious off road with JLR's reliability record - but why buy any new vehicle? 35% average depreciation as soon as you drive off in it. But I notice most JLR fanboys just won't accept the long standing reliability issues JLR have. Your experiences have been interesting to watch. When the Grenadier comes on sale....
My 2018 disco has just gone bang 32k. Amazing cars but the inginium engines seem inheritly flawed. Jag and landy. We also have faults with the x5 I hear. Turbo failure leading to catastrophic failure... Soon as it arrives at the garage on the trailer the dealer check the oil which got chucked out the exhaust and blames you leaving you out in the cold. Electrical issues galore too...
Hi Doc, the new defender looks fantastic. If your discovery is going to be unreliable I would replace it. It is easy for me to say that when it’s not my hard earned dollars, sorry pounds going into some else’s pocket. Me…..I have short arms and long pockets. Lol It’s good to see you are sticking with land rovers, they are always a head turner. All the best Regards Peter.
Personally, if you can afford it, I think the Defender is the better looking car and what the Discovery 5 should have been all along. Ultimately it comes down to personal choice although I think both are overpriced. Probably a better deal would be to find a low mileage full LR service history Discovery 4 and take out a full warranty cover. 😊
100% get the new Defender, I was one of those old Defender drivers that said I would never have a new Defender, opps I lied. I now have a new 90 hard top by Urban and I absolutely love it, in fact I love it so much I have a second one on order because of the long wait time that won't be here until Feb 2023, hopefully the residuals will still be nice and high. Mind you, all that said i do still have my beloved Bowler 90, but she doesn't come out of the garage much anymor.e
Great video doc, it’s interesting that very late plate 16 low mileage examples of discovery 4 now commanding a high sales prices , eg a landmark on 66 plate about 30000 miles now going for over £42000. I think as you said that disco 5 is more suv-ish not like disco 4 , the new defender is only a replacement to d4 at the moment. The high price and lack of availability of the new defender may be pushing prices of the d4 . Regards mark
Thanks Mark- you’re right, couldn’t believe how much D4’s are right now - does show how good they were. I had a D4 a while back and did love it- very different to the D5.
@@thedoctorsgarage thanks very much for your reply, it’s ironic that d5 se 67 plate about 30000 in the clock goes for £34000, HSE , and HSE lux goes for £45000 at the moment. Kind regards mark
In your line of work I'm sure your not short of a few quid. If I were you I would trade in your Discovery for a used Defender if the warranty is just about to expire. Harwoods had around 26 low mileage models on their site the last time I looked. No waiting for a new one to arrive and hopefully those 2nd hand models have had the issues resolved from them during the first few thousand miles. See what sort of a trade in they offer you rather than selling the car on these Internet sites.
Everything is so expensive right now - esp the 2nd hand market for defenders - I almost think you get better value ordering a new one and waiting! Do like the idea of having the issues resolved though!
Why the obsession with being in a “current “ car? The discovery 4 or even land cruiser 200 can do everything that defender can do ,or even Toyota fortuna
@@thedoctorsgarage I’m not against it. But I don’t understand why people want more things in their cars that distract them from driving. Here In South Africa there’s always accidents cause of these touchscreens and people looking at them.
I find the Discovery and the new Defender quite ugly I'm afraid, i do have the 2009 Defender TDCI SWB XS but did like the Discovery 4 style. Sorry that's all my opinion, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
@@thedoctorsgarage I also like my Puma Defender (2012) for fun drive and OFF roading, though fun drive made it my daily car for two monthes already... While my QX30 left on the parking...
I do like the looks of it. But it has become the G-wagen in a way, it's too expensive to slap around in heavy terrain, even if it's technically capable. There is an U.S. channel called TFL offroad, they took delivery of their third Defender before it was ok. The wheels fitted to it is not exactly for terrain either. Probably meant for venturing to the outer rims of Chelsea:p
Just don’t like to much Technology in any car .. it’s expensive if it goes wrong I love my LR3 it’s basic it’s great to work on the new Defender is typical of a Chelsea Tractor I’d be scared to death if I took it off I Road a 4x4 meant. to be Drove
I think you might be wrong the load bay does fold flat completely as the rear seat bases flip up and you take the headrest out and then The load area folds completely flat. there would be more space than your discovery then
Hi Doc, Definitely chop the Disco in, strike whilst the iron is hot, you don’t know how long this madness will last! You’ve had 3 years or so motoring in the Disco and you’ll get your money back more or less AND walk away with a brand new modern Defender, how awesome to have the old classic Defender and the younger modern brother on your drive, I think you’ll smile every morning you wake up and look at the pair. This weekend just gone I fitted the ‘Jetlock’ security device on my Puma, fantastic piece of kit Doc, beautifully engineered, look it up mate, well worth installing on the TD5. Keep up the great work Doc. Kind regards Tony
Thanks Tony- appreciate the comment some great points- Jetlock sounds good just googled it. Think i may do a video on security- seem to be a lot gettifng stolen right now
Essentially the Defender is the Disco 5. The Disco 5 is something entirely different than the Discover lineup. The Defender never really came back or evolved.
Disco 5 is a Boring Bloated Clumsy Plain Jane. Defender Takes it and Takes Current Range Rovers as Defender has Practical All Purpose Use for the Industrialist with Style and a Sense of Adventure for the ambitious !. As the Original 1970's Range Rover - the New Defender is:- a Car for All Seasons and A Car for All Reasons. I take deliver of a new Defender 110 this week- i wouldn't give Yard Space to any other Current Land Rover Model/Type.
New Defenders seem better value at the moment compared with used and I haven’t seen any to my preferred specification (including locking rear differential). I couldn’t bring myself to go for the D5 over my D4 although it gives a more modern and luxurious driving experience, I know a few D4 owners that have said likewise, even if it’s just for styling reasons. I found the new Defender very competent off / on road but (all) the test vehicles all had faults and I found it a bit claustrophobic compared to the D4. I didn’t like the 2litre at all. It’s not comparable with the old Defender it’s just a shared name. I’ve had LRs for over 30 years, I’ve been a dedicated enthusiast despite unreliability and awful service and I’m not sure that I’ll have another after my current two. I have made a deposit on the one that cannot be mentioned. If I had to choose I would go for the Defender and wait it out. IMHO the D4 was the best ever all rounder, some distinct flaws but great overall. In the new Defender choice, much is probably down to personal circumstances and needs and possibly the level of inconvenience that you are prepared to endure if you get a less than reliable example. I’ve noted that although used prices have gone wild, main dealers are still offering bottom trade in prices, several thousand below “we buy any” and similar.
Thanks for the detailed comment Mike- I had a D4 a while back and did love it- great all round cars - think it was the pinnacle of the range. D5 is much more Range Rover but I still like it. It’s funny that despite all the unreliability etc we still want more! 😂
Defo sell the Discovery while the markets bonkers, and before something else (expensive) brakes on it. I sold my 2017 Range Rover Sport three months ago. I got 1000’s more than when I nearly sold it at start of the year, then surprised myself by ordering a MY23 Discovery. I liked the practicality I saw in some of your reviews, so took a test drive certain I’d still be ordering another RRS - I could not believe how much better the ride was compared to the RRS, and the boot space was a game changer. The P300 MHEV engine is brilliant. Also as you say in your review, the quality of the Discovery interior is not that far off a Range Rover so I don’t feel short changed. Had the Defender been £35k-£40k, it would have been a tough choice for me to make. But not when they are broadly the same price. Personally I love the looks & dimensions of the 90. I’ll almost certainly pick up a second hand one as a weekend car in ~4 years time. Look forward to seeing what you decide to do Doc, though it sounds like your hearts made the decision for you already.
Thanks for your comment Grant- completely agree with your re:prices- love the defender but as you say if it was 30-40k it would be a simple decision not when it is 60k plus ! Exciting to hear you have ordered a new Discovery- when it comes you may be able to sell it straight on for profit if this carries on!
The Disco 5 is so under powered for using as a workhorse the design is too Range Roverish the reliability is shocking & the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. I went from disco 2 to 4 and sooo pleased I did, will be replacing D4 with defender when they come down to reasonable money & ironed out as many gremlins as possible but still has a green oval so reliability will never be great but been buying for 25 years wouldn't dream of anything else 😂
Change it mate. The new Defender should have be the Discovery 5 which lost its appealing unique boxy identity with “ wanna be a Range Rover”WHY? What did Landrover designers think? Sadly, Defender will probably take all sales from the sole less Discovery 5, now a dying breed.
I am giving my Land Rover Defender 90 away for just £5 a ticket! The winner will be announced on Sunday 17th December at 8pm. Good luck!

LOL
Lastly, I think I would really miss the fuel efficiency and torque of my turbo diesel if I switched to a defender.
Thanks for the comment Ettore- yes I have heard of some electric issues but much less than previous models 👌🏻
Thanks for the comment Carl- great to
Hear you’ve had such a positive experience owning a new one 👌🏻👌🏻
Got a new Defender P400 on order. Had one for an afternoon but only drove for five minutes before I’d fallen in love. Go for it!
👌🏻 thanks for the comment Karl
I have a Td5 Defender and a new 110 on order. Ordered in August but not expected until mid 2022.
Thanks Ben - will be a good set up with the 2 defenders. Should have good residuals on your new defender too when you do get it with the wait
Interesting comparison Randy thanks - definitely agree with it feeling more upright
👌🏻 thanks for the comment Josh
With the amount of R&D that went into the new Defender, that is the clear winner. Nevermind safety, emissions etc. I'm also keen to see what Thierry will do regarding reliability at JLR since he's apparently revolutionising design-led reliability so the newer models should be better.
👌🏻
Had a similar choice. Sold our late 2016 D4 landmark for what we paid for it, but went for a new D5 delivered this month. Upgrades over previous D5 including new engine look and infotainment syste really make a difference over older D5, and a much nicer car in terms of comfort, luxury, practicality and to our eyes style over the
Defender. On 22" wheels looks terrific and so smooth to drive.
Nice Amanda! The interior on the new D5 is much better. Enjoy your new car
My wife wants to buy a used 2018 discovery 5 HSE with the TD6 3.0 diesel. Looks well maintained but I’d get the extended warranty. What should I look out for? Are we walking into trouble?
I still love my D5 and I think if you get it in warranty you are all good
I have a 110 D300 X-Dynamic SE local if you ever wanted a whirl
Thanks Ollie appreciate it!
I think a defender would be fun to try especially if you've tried that disco life already. You can always go back to a disco for the next one if it doesn't work out
That is true!
Thinking about doing the same, but I hear the defender is not available until mid to late 2022.
Ii think you’re right but you have to order it now to stand a chance at getting one!
I think you should crank up the volume on the intro music a little bit, I still have some hearing left in my right ear. 😀
😂😂 ok next time
No as I've seen 2 new defenders being picked up on a recovery truck on the A1 M in the last 3 weeks. (Broken down) normally it's a BMW on the side of the road...
Fair enough - based on my experience I’d be avoiding any of the 2L models I think if it’s anything like my D5 has been
@@thedoctorsgarage I agree with you. Land rovers are nice cars but have the worst reliability rating.
Hi, are you talking about the 2L twin-turbo diesel engine with 240hp ? Thanks
Thanks for the comment Jon- 255k miles is impressive!
Love my D250 6cyl, faultless and 40mpg here in the country. Been offered 10 grand more than what I paid but not selling.
Nice! Prices are crazy at the moment
Thanks for the comment David - the offset plate is a real problem for a lot of people- I have seen you can get a centre alignment kit from startech to centre it!
that design nod to the Disco (LR) 3 & 4 series' really turns some people off. maybe they don't know why it's there...
I'd go Discovery, just because of the boot access and sheer volume.
Thanks for the comment Adam- it's a good point - the D5 is a real boat
And if you want the 3rd row of seats, the Disco beats again the Defender at this chapter👍
yeah, I really wanted to get a Defender when it came out and test drove them, but if you spec them with the same power plants, similar tires etc. the Disco gets better mileage, is quieter, has slightly better interior materials (subjective), has more cargo room and a better lift-gate with a drop down platform for sitting on during ski season. for me the Disco made more sense.
Thanks for the comment JC - great to hear you've had such a positive experience with yours 👌
Defender all day on design, but so expensive, and reliability is a big concern stopping me choosing a LR product full stop.
👌
Is it true the 2019 discovery’s have had a lot less issue vs the 2018’s? Every used Discovery I drive that is 2019 is in significantly better shape than the 2018 for some reason.
Not sure Sohel- I do know that the 2018 2L engine had some known Issues ( like mine )
There is a 130 defender coming out with a 7 seat arrangement, comparable to the disco
I’d say swop it in. The new “Defender” is what traditionalists wanted from a Discovery so it makes sense when viewed from that angle. It’s definitely not a replacement for the original Defender. You’d have to get a Grenadier for that…
Thanks for the comment Phil- Don’t start the grenadier chat on here Phil- it got very heated last time I mentioned that word! 😂
That would be like trading in a pair of underwear for a jock strap. Discovery offers much more than a rudimentary Defender.
I swapped my Disco 4 for a 79 Series dual cab Landcruiser & have never been happier! I now have reliability 😄
Lot of people say land cruiser is the way forward!
Thanks Adrian- sounds like you have good insight in to working on them👌🏻
I guess LR built the new Defender for a certain market. It’s a shame they didn’t build it for the original market.
👍🏻
I couldn’t afford either a new defender or a discovery 5 and wanted the best of both worlds so I bought a D4 V8 5.0 litre 7 seater and kept my Defender Td5 110!
In your situation and having driven both as well it’s perfect to say that you swap!
But get the V8 !!
To be fair that's a pretty solid set up - 110 TD5 and the 5.0L D4! The new Bond Defender is very nice but over 100k!
@@thedoctorsgarage thanks and they have a 1976 Series 3 SWB 2/25 petrol for company which is undergoing a good engine rebuild hopefully be back on the road soon!
Then you will have two defenders. Will you still drive the old one?
I think the new on isn't a replacement for the old but a more modern alternative for lager drives/a lot of stuff in the boot etc. The TD5 90 is actually quite a small car space wise inside
Head says disco as it’s a car that can do everything. Pull a trailer of hay across a farm then rock up at posh restaurant and it blends in with a Range Rover. However my heart says defender as it just looks amazing and has all the defender heritage and yes it can do all the above, but it’s still stereotypically an agricultural truck no matter what size alloys go on it.
Thanks for the comment Rori- completely agree!
As you touched on , reliability is everything for Land Rover especially in the USA where they love to knock any vehicle from Europe.
👌🏻
another great video, just subbed :D
Thanks! Welcome to the channel and appreciate the support 🙌🏼
@@thedoctorsgarage no worries :)
I like the Defedner however, I think for your sake its best to stay put with your Discovery unless you really really love the defender. I could be wrong. 🙂
Fair point Karim!
The new defender is still more utilitarian but definitely improved in the that it doesn’t leak etc!
Was after new disco till the new defender came out now looking to get a defender but not easy to find at a competitive price👍
They are so expensive right now- I think it’s cheaper to order new and wait to be honest!
I am going through some similar thinking, Discovery is great, I have old D3 and almost ready to upgrade
I am drawn to Defender more for some reason, D3 /4is just soo good
Well i have just done that . My Disco is 2 years old and i ordered my Defender two months ago .
Brilliant - enjoy! 👌
Good luck!
Thanks Steve! Waiting times are crazy at the moment as are prices- hopefully a bit better next year
How long are the waiting times? I had a dealer tell me 6/7 months and another day it’s 12-18 months.
@@DavidDarmanin truth is I don’t think they know David!
And a comparison on and off road? Ty
Maybe a future video 🙏🏼
I have the 3 L 250 brake horsepower before that I had an Audi Q8 and I would not go back to it love it to bits
👌🏻
After looking at the mpg stats on the INEOs I got a refund on of my £450 but I'm not sure about this either.
Or other option would be the new grenadier for you- lot of people speaking quite highly of them
Good looking.
A Rover troll. Folks, ignore this person.
Not convinced on the Grenadier yet…
@@thedoctorsgarage you can jump on your Grenadier or Grenade. Take your pick. I'll keep the Rover.
So many people with 2L D5's from 2018 have had new engines... I haven't had any turbo problems....yet
@@thedoctorsgarage watch this space :( hopefully it's a 2018 thang as they are the best cars around
Hi Doc, the new defender looks fantastic. If your discovery is going to be unreliable I would replace it.
It is easy for me to say that when it’s not my hard earned dollars, sorry pounds going into some else’s pocket.
Me…..I have short arms and long pockets. Lol
It’s good to see you are sticking with land rovers, they are always a head turner.
All the best

haha thanks Peter appreciate your comment - do love Land Rover even if they let me down!
Good advice thanks!
The Ineos Grenadier seems to be the better option.
Not so sure on the grenadier at the moment - would like to see and drive one in person first
Bin them both, get a Landcruiser or a Ineos Grenadier
Not so sure on the grenadier at the moment - would like to see and drive one in person first
I would choose the Ineos Grenadier over both.

I have both a D5 and a new Defender ----- would put the Disco in front both are 3L .....
Thanks Paul- interesting you have both and still rate them D5 better 👍🏻
100% get the new Defender, I was one of those old Defender drivers that said I would never have a new Defender, opps I lied. I now have a new 90 hard top by Urban and I absolutely love it, in fact I love it so much I have a second one on order because of the long wait time that won't be here until Feb 2023, hopefully the residuals will still be nice and high.
Mind you, all that said i do still have my beloved Bowler 90, but she doesn't come out of the garage much anymor.e
Thanks for your comment- Nice! I think residuals will still be good when you get your new one
More modern infotainment/connectivity and a fresher interior & exterior is why I would go for a newer car as my everyday driver

I would say swap as the disco 5 is absolutely gopping, either way there both gonna deprecate at rapid knots
😂 thanks Landie Man- I don’t mind the looks of it!
I think you’re right! 😂 It’s not the car you’d want to really push off road for 70k!
I would definitely chop the D5 in for the new Defender. I have an old 90 but do like the new Defender. BTW, the music is mighty annoying!

Just don’t like to much Technology in any car .. it’s expensive if it goes wrong I love my LR3 it’s basic it’s great to work on the new Defender is typical of a Chelsea Tractor I’d be scared to death if I took it off I Road a 4x4 meant. to be Drove
The reason why you need to swap for a Defender is that the Discovery 5 is the ugliest vehicle LR has ever made. It looks like a bar of soap!

Definitely chop the Disco in, strike whilst the iron is hot, you don’t know how long this madness will last!

I take deliver of a new Defender 110 this week- i wouldn't give Yard Space to any other Current Land Rover Model/Type.
Yes :)
👌🏻
THE DEFENDER LOOKING GOOD IN BLCK
🙌🏼
Exciting to hear you have ordered a new Discovery- when it comes you may be able to sell it straight on for profit if this carries on!
hopefully Discovery 6 will be the same shape as the 3 and 4
Really interested to see what the D6 looks like- no idea when it will be released though? I’m guessing another 4 years or so
The Disco 5 is so under powered for using as a workhorse the design is too Range Roverish the reliability is shocking & the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. I went from disco 2 to 4 and sooo pleased I did, will be replacing D4 with defender when they come down to reasonable money & ironed out as many gremlins as possible but still has a green oval so reliability will never be great but been buying for 25 years wouldn't dream of anything else 😂
Thanks for the comment John- I’m hoping the price of the new defender drops next year too! Second hand are more than new right now!
Change it mate. The new Defender should have be the Discovery 5 which lost its appealing unique boxy identity with “ wanna be a Range Rover”WHY? What did Landrover designers think?
Sadly, Defender will probably take all sales from the sole less Discovery 5, now a dying breed.
👌
