Good interview. I wish you'd invited Richard to show more coins. I just love learning about them. I wonder if he's ever run into WWII vets who had Japanese coins. I knew a man in the Midwest who brought back a couple of cigar boxes full of 19th and early 20th century Japanese coins after serving in the Occupation. And a shout-out to Richard for being able to run a calculator upside down over the counter. That is a small super-power.
Living in Japan and stacking and collecting here for the past 8 years, it’s definitely different. Silver isn’t valued as much as gold generally in society so you don’t see a lot of bullion for sale. I’ve been buying US constitution silver here for below melt for years because of that reason. It’s tough for the dealers to move it so it’s priced cheap. You can find some amazing deals on Japanese numismatic stuff, some really beautiful coinage and to think about the history and hands it’s passed through, and almost everything is raw.
日本のコインを紹介して下さって有り難うございます。 Thank very much for introducing Japanese coins!! In Japan, there are lots of the counterfeits made in China. This seems to be a big problem. Most coin shops are reliable, but it is hard to find coin shops especially in rural areas. Even if you can find it, pricing is not good. Most Japanese collector get coins at the large coin festivals held in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka.
Dude finally! Thank you so much for this video. There's almost no content on Japanese silver out there. You failed by not showing more of the actual coins and explaining exactly what kind of silver coins are available from Japan but at least you posted some Japanese silver on the internet!
The first coin is a taisho 14year 50 sen coin. .720 Silver content. I'm living in Japan at the moment and doing some stacking. More difficult to get silver at good price but I have been buying Junk Silver and some Japanese coins at a decent price. Takes some work on auctions. They don't do stacking here. I think most are just numismatic collectors. Some do buy gold but major metals outlets will only have gold and only sell silver in larger amounts.
Does anyone else think Richard is like a younger, thinner Tim from Yankee Stacking? Give him some right-leaning political quips and some sweaters and it's game-on.
My favourite coins are from the Meiji era after Emperor Meiji who reigned from 1868 to 1910, Silver Dragons - this was when there was the gold 20 yen and silver 1 yen, the Japanese silver trade dollar etc.
Great to see the King back in action. I did'nt see King Richard at the recent ANA show. I had to pleasure to talk to Adrian and Big Bill. My goal in to meet Harry and you, Silver Dragons. Great Show!
Tony is right, but just to add on that the Bank of Japan mint doesn't make any sovereign coins. They make some commemoratives, but they are usually priced very high. The vast majority of the sets they sell are just proofs of the standard currency, no precious metal in them.
Would of been cool for you to show the dragon on some of those sen coins. When you read the date on those coins it will be emperor reigns (taisho) then the that year of his reign.( Year 6 of his reign) I think I got that right lol.
Comix is paper promises and the 🇯🇵 money failed(paper) much like our USD is rigged and failing?Anything related? Paper promises? rigged? Selling more than you have to back? Thanks SD for the amazing vid as always!
I have a U.S. 20 dollar African note with the gold seal. My Great uncle was carrying it during WW2 when he was killed in France. It's has blood on it and it also has 16 signatures of other soldiers that were there when he got killed is my understanding why it was signed. My grandpa was less than a mile away from him when he got killed also serving during WW2. After the fact he was brought over and got to see his body before it was taken off the war field. I believe that we're he may have gotten the 20 dollar bill I am not sure though he died before I was born, so what I am saying has been passed down by story. I was told I should send it off to get graded just to perserve it but I have been afraid to send it off. Any suggestions what I should do to help perserve it.
Short snorter. I believe that is what it's called. I used to have a Hawaii note someone stole from me. Awesome note I can imagine your note has sentimental value to you I would cherish that. I would frame it and hang it on the wall with a note and description of all the information you have on it. Also I would look into the names on the note. No doubt they were your uncles comrades and who knows you might be able to find some of them and get more information on what you're Uncle did in the war.
Awesome video. I can relate to Richard. I lived in Japan (Okinawa) for six months. I did not buy any coins there because they were so over priced. I did manage to sell some gold jewelry over there and barely managed to get it sold for just under melt. I like Japanese coins but mainly buy the newer ones because I can relate to them. I bought the 100 yen phoenix coin for about 5$. I also bought a one ounce silver coin from Okinawa prefecture commemorative. I bought all these coins in the USA. I completely concur with Richard. Buy only Japanese coins IF you plan on buying to collect and not resell. Only buy to resell if you know what you're selling and can communicate effectively in Japanese to the coin shop owners. Remember Japanese coins are not manga so not so popular but they have their niche if you know where to post them for sale. I wonder if Richard is into Chinese coins of the period. I forgot to mention Richard was correct about one other thing. Japan is mostly a cash society so be prepared to dish out cash everwhere. (Withdraw from an ATM)
I think the comparison in prices from silver eagles doesn't make any sense, because they are not that common in Japan and all imported, so of course they are more expensive. I guess Chinese panda, Australian koala and kookaburra would be cheaper :)
Ha! He want to sell those as a coin of numistic value... I would only pay spot for scrapping that. Don't waste your money. Buy coin of your realm! Pre-1965 dimes, quarters, half dollars, dollars, and eagles!
There's plenty of people that collect foreign and of course there is plenty of numismatic coins as well...just stay in your "realm" bud. Also you've posted multiple times...calm down there fella.
I wonder if Richard experienced the big Earthquake they just had? Also, what was his thought was on the Japanese stockmarket and yen recent decline? How are people coping there?

There must have been 2 hours worth of interesting content there but we got only 10 minutes! Hope he lets Richard show more in a next video!
Richard's knowledge of Japanese coins is absolutely invaluable, he's amazing.
you can literally google any japanese coin and find all the info and history about it
Yeah it’s super interesting 👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you Richard and Silver Dragons , Great Interview and it's interesting to hear about Japan :) QC
Great to see King Richard again! It’s good to learn about other world coin markets. That was so interesting to watch. Thanks SD.

Chinese fakes of old Japanese and Chinese coins have made it to California, too, and show up in bulk at antiques trade shows.
Awesome interview with Richard! Very knowledgeable man! Cool!! 😎
Appreciate that 😎 and yeah he’s pretty cool

Does anyone else think Richard is like a younger, thinner Tim from Yankee Stacking? Give him some right-leaning political quips and some sweaters and it's game-on.

King Richard is the Rain Man of coin collecting.
Yeah.
I want to see all those coins…
NoOoOo!!! Show more of the coins, let's hear some stories from Richard! Part 2 now!!
I’m glad you liked the interview… might have to do a pt 2 now 👀😂
This may be a stupid question for some but, does Japan have their equivalent of a 1oz silver and 1oz gold bullion?
Asahi silver coins and bars could be equivalent to 1oz coin. Fun fact asahi that bought Johnson matthey silver refining.

Fantastic
Very interesting video both times I went to Japan I wasn't in the coins yet so I never thought about what they have to offer
Very interesting. I have a couple Japanese silver coins i found metal detecting. No idea how old they would be.. I'm assuming pre WWll.
👀
I'd watch a show like this on other countries too
I’d like some Japanese silver. I have a few 100mon and 1mon coins. But they are just bronze
Goodonyas!

Japan's prices are pretty wild, but familiar to me.
The cheapest 2024 Sliver eagle here in New Zealand is $62 NZD, which is about 38 USD.
But NZ is expensive place to live.
Lucky dog Richard
some lovely specimens you have there

So what about when you go to sell gold or silver and the tax? Seems like something the yakuza would get involved in.

I bought a couple of those pieces Richard brought back.
Give yourself a pat on the back😂
😊
what about gold coins in japan
Always great to hear from Richard!
Agreed 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Does he speak Japanese?
I love Japanese coins I'm going to have to call and see what I can do for a $100. To
$150. Peace love & stardust. TomCat
So if you're a middle class Japanese facing Yen hyperinflation, you're pretty much screwed.
They never suffered hyperinflation like Venezuela. Japan is alot more stable than the US.

I like collecting Japanese coins, it's a hobby and not for stacking.
It's a waste of money and a con against most regular people!
Where can I buy those coins?
japan…
🙂👊🏽
They have phone translaters and you could hire someone to help you by paying them with practicing their english .
Interesting. THE SARGE
Does Richard speak Japanese?
I wonder if Richard experienced the big Earthquake they just had?
Also, what was his thought was on the Japanese stockmarket and yen recent decline? How are people coping there?
The weeb in me wants japanese bullion
Lol
American stickers should be stacking coin of our realm, if they are smart anyways. Japanese silver isn't worth nothing but spot here in the US!
@@robertdudley9311 Perhaps it's a hobby and stacking coins from a place of interest is not a waste
Nope.
eh, just base a anime around a coin collecting hero with a good plot and there will be interest in coins again. lol
This guy is a weeb
Him and Adrian are just the best! Of course Henry is the master, but like they’re such honest and decent people it seems to me.🎉
