Fascinating. Thank you for giving us the grand tour of all of this magnificence. I visited St. Paul’s in 1994, but missed the opportunity to hear the organ. Do, please, treat us to this glorious sound!
Long ago Mankind was able to make these real amazing organs by hand. A big job. I am happy to show this today, have fun listening to this great machine.
St Paul's. Visited the Cathedral many times, listened to organ recitals many times and was immersed in the Organ Symphony in the Cathedral. Since then, I am sold to the Cathedral and the organ.
Interesting to see behind the scenes. I didn't realise the organ was so spread out. Simon Johnson used to play at my local St. Albans Cathedral, I have him playing some hymns on video.
This organ is really amazing sounding. Very rich. I was invited to view the console above the choir. This video doesn't really show how massive and grand the console really is, not to mention how it sounds in St. Paul's Cathedral. The 7,189 pipes, 189 ranks makes it the 3rd largest in Great Britain.
The pedal organ used to have two open basses plus one open bass on the pedal chancel and a violone 16 in the dome. What happened to those stops?? The pedal organ used to be larger according to the recording from 1960. Wonderful organ still 😊😊 Christopher Dearnleys recording
Very nice. But shame no tuba/ fanfare trumpet demonstrations :( Never forget when Huw Williams allowed me to come upstairs after evensong to see it once. I'd love to play it.
I've seen a number of videos with hymns being sung at St Paul's but I don't think I've ever heard the organ sound out with what a friend would call "Grand Fleurs" - (sort of a showoff playing...lol). Cheers from Costa Rica and really cool introduction by the way.
Robert bishop Nothing wrong with the Hammond organ, it has a place in musical history, used on literally thousands of recordings, you’re comparing two different styles of instrument...you would never dis a saxophone over a Cor Anglaise so why do it with an organ !
I've personally heard this organ in concert while visiting London. There's so much reverb that it's hard to distinguish exactly what's being played. Sometimes, big is TOO big & the sound of the organ gets lost in its own echoes. I'd still prefer a good Baroque tracker with about 20 ranks, 2 manuals & pedal.
Last year i wrote an organ composition, and have itched to hear it on a pipe organ, at our church we have an electronic; if i sent the score, would it be possible for an organist to play it? and possibly record it? Many Thanks
@RobCharles1981 indeed. A couple of years ago there was an offer up on ebay for just 30 minutes on this organ for 2000 quid! For that amount id expect to take home a rank or two as well.
That largely depends which rank of pipes, or which stop, is drawn. There is a noticeable delay for the Royal Trumpet 4'/8'/16' because of the sheer distance they are away from everything else which needs the organist to adapt their playing style, but as most of the other pipes are relatively near to each other there isn't much of a delay you'd notice with the other ranks. There was a demonstration video up a while back showing off many of the different stops on this organ that showed off just how pronounced the delay on the Royal Trumpet stops is, but unfortunately it looks like it's been taken down.
The organ was obviously so much smaller than the present one. it was hand blown like any other organ of that time. there's no way Wren could have built an organ of this size at his time (or any one else)
I have a question for Simon Johnson himself. What happened to his fabulous stop by stop tour of the St. Paul's organ? Did he get ding'd by youtube for using Harry Potter themes perchance?
+Mark Demmin II, The Vintage Voice That tour was part of a DVD available from Priory Records. That's probably why it was removed. The DVD/CD is still available
I would say it's just a little improvisation - a thing he made up on the spot. He would think this childishly simple compared to the kind of improvisations he would be used to making as a cathedral organist.
I've just listened to Simon Johnson at the organ in Montserrat (Barcelona). Very good playing Byrd and Walton. Bach was not articulated and Elgar is (pardon) very boring.
Fascinating. Thank you for giving us the grand tour of all of this magnificence. I visited St. Paul’s in 1994, but missed the opportunity to hear the organ. Do, please, treat us to this glorious sound!
Thank you for this closeup look at a wonderful instrument.
This has to be one of the finest organs in the non French world !!! I wish that all could go to London to hear it !!!!!
Long ago Mankind was able to make these real amazing organs by hand. A big job.
I am happy to show this today, have fun listening to this great machine.
A beautiful documentary and fascinating look at this marvellous monster.
My favorite cathedral in the world... lovely overview of it's Grand Organ. I was privileged to attend service here one Sunday morning.
St Paul's.
Visited the Cathedral many times, listened to organ recitals many times and was immersed in the Organ Symphony in the Cathedral.
Since then, I am sold to the Cathedral and the organ.
We need more of this stuff!!
Excellent video thank you so much for giving us a close look at this magnificent organ
What a neat explanation of a magnificent instrument.
Totally awesome tour. Thanks so much!
What a charmingly presented video which puts the organ into context. It is a wonderful instrument.
Fantastic Simon. Thank you for sharing more of an official tour of the organ on TH-cam. I hope to meet up with you again one day in London. Cheers!
Thank you very much indeed Simon for showing us the Organ here at St Pauls please post more videos of this fine machine much appreciated with thanks.
this is a fantastic tour of this organ!
Marvelous information!! Thank you!!
I’ve been to St. Paul’s but had no idea about the organ-what a masterpiece.
Thank You very much for that impressive introduction. You must be a glad man to be allowed to play this instrument.
Absolutley brilliant tour of this great organ, you must get the dvd of this, not to be missed !
I could watch this all day.
Excellent descriptive video - thanks!
Grand is not the word; It's a Majestic Organ that sounds heavenly.
I love it...reds stops and subbas 32' bombardone and clarinet , oboe.... lovely 😍
I guess there´s a lot more to tell about the organ(s) of St. Paul´s than what you told us, as well as a lot more sounds to let us enjoy ...
Perhaps the world's most beautiful instrument.
Interesting to see behind the scenes. I didn't realise the organ was so spread out.
Simon Johnson used to play at my local St. Albans Cathedral, I have him playing some hymns on video.
This is simply amazing!!
Very informative. Thank you for the lesson.
I believe this may be the location of the world's only full length 32' contre-bombarde-en-chamade
32 foot bombarde is basically 32 foot trumpet or trombone Reed stop?
On an English organ, the bombarde is a fuller and brighter sound than a trumpet or trombone. But basically, yes.
@@shiningarmor2838 thank you
Besides maybe the Midmer-Losh organ.
@@s.p.3587 On the Midmer-Losh organ, the closest thing to that I can think of is the fanfare trombone

I believe it is the fifth largest instrument in Great Britain.
What happen to the video when he was going through the organ history and some of the stops on the organ and he played the Harry potter theme song
WTF MAN ! He must took the other video of the liver pool organ down as well
Wonderful. What great organ and church is this?
i need a video of the lowest to the highest note in a Grand Cathedral Organ
I remembered Hearing it from my trip to the UK.
The pedal organ used to have two open basses plus one open bass on the pedal chancel and a violone 16 in the dome. What happened to those stops?? The pedal organ used to be larger according to the recording from 1960. Wonderful organ still 😊😊 Christopher Dearnleys recording
Very nice. But shame no tuba/ fanfare trumpet demonstrations :(
Never forget when Huw Williams allowed me to come upstairs after evensong to see it once.
I'd love to play it.
Yes, he would have. The organ was completed for the opening of the quire in 1697 (before the rest of the building was completed).
I've seen a number of videos with hymns being sung at St Paul's but I don't think I've ever heard the organ sound out with what a friend would call "Grand Fleurs" - (sort of a showoff playing...lol). Cheers from Costa Rica and really cool introduction by the way.
Just WONDERFUL
Wow a 'stereo' organ in 1872 :)
Say want you want about the Hammond b3 organ.....nothing can touch this awesome pipe organ. I wonder how long it took to rebuild this organ.
Robert bishop Nothing wrong with the Hammond organ, it has a place in musical history, used on literally thousands of recordings, you’re comparing two different styles of instrument...you would never dis a saxophone over a Cor Anglaise so why do it with an organ !
@RobCharles1981 The interesting thing to know is who would put that offer up in the first place?
I've personally heard this organ in concert while visiting London. There's so much reverb that it's hard to distinguish exactly what's being played. Sometimes, big is TOO big & the sound of the organ gets lost in its own echoes. I'd still prefer a good Baroque tracker with about 20 ranks, 2 manuals & pedal.
Do opportunities exist for visiting organists to come and try out the St Paul's organ?
I can't imagine tuneing a pipe organ of that size
Last year i wrote an organ composition, and have itched to hear it on a pipe organ, at our church we have an electronic; if i sent the score, would it be possible for an organist to play it? and possibly record it? Many Thanks

Beautiful thank you and God bless you in Jesus name amen
Most interesting.
interesting, but can you play 'the shed men'?
With all the spread out pipes isn't there a noticeable delay between pressing the key and the sound? Wouldn't that vary across the keyboard?
That largely depends which rank of pipes, or which stop, is drawn. There is a noticeable delay for the Royal Trumpet 4'/8'/16' because of the sheer distance they are away from everything else which needs the organist to adapt their playing style, but as most of the other pipes are relatively near to each other there isn't much of a delay you'd notice with the other ranks. @organistuk will you pls. tell us the title of the recording, and say some words about it.
I have a question for Simon Johnson himself. What happened to his fabulous stop by stop tour of the St. Paul's organ? Did he get ding'd by youtube for using Harry Potter themes perchance?
I know!! I've been trying to find it too but I haven't been successful. Let me know if you find it, and I'll let you know if i find it. Best of Luck.
Noah Pierson
Hi, i downloaded a lot of these, i think i have it actually. Which one you after?? I know he did 2 demonstrations. I will have a look
+Nick Moore hi sorry im only just getting back to you, Im after the one, where Simon goes through the organ stop by stop by stop tour.
+Noah “Kenny” Pierson Hi Noah, i think i have it. I will upload it in the next few days on my channel. All the best.
+Mark Demmin II, The Vintage Voice That tour was part of a DVD available from Priory Records. That's probably why it was removed. The DVD/CD is still available
bellissimo, darrei la vità, per improvisare- compore- suonare, come lui!?
Can they play the opening of Faith by George Michael on that grand organ?
How are the stops linked to the pipes?
fascinating!
That organ needs a lot of air, was that converted to modern electric blowers?
'You could almost live inside it". Bit noisy though Simon!
This organ I wish I could have a play on it the acoustics are awesome the echo of twelve seconds could confuse the organist
@organist12345 Id love to play this Organ it would be like winning the lottery!
What song is being played at 2:49
would Wren have ever heard the organ???
...and the modest Allen C6c that I play every Sunday,
...and windy too... ^_^
I would say it's just a little improvisation - a thing he made up on the spot. He would think this childishly simple compared to the kind of improvisations he would be used to making as a cathedral organist.

Interessant i didàctic. Gràcies

@organist12345 I wouldn't play that money!!
i have been struck
I miss the previous version using Harry Potter melodies
Nanny
A lot of romantic organs have full length 32,s
St. Paul Cathedral…….NOT Paul’s.
What the hell has happened to the world ?
Didactical.
Dear Sir, nicht so viel labern, sondern spielen und vorführen!
There is no such thing as a french horn -_-
There is in England though since the 1930s there has been a preference for simply referring to the various types of french horn as horns
Please Play Stop your talking, I am sorry I do not understand you.
Thank You.
