      The Arturia is a gateway drug. I like Analog Lab for basic stuff but if you want to get deep into synthesis, you will be forced to upgrade the synths to the full version. There's good and bad in all things but I love getting lost in programming synths and can easily lose 3 hours getting deep into a sound. You can't do that with Analog Lab but you also won't waste 3 hours.

    Either you explained it wrong or NKS wasnt available in 2019 but it is wrong that you can only use the Native Instruments for Native Instruments instruments, you can either use it as a normal midi keyboard or with Komplete Kontrol where you got almost every VSTs integrated. After having the Essential 88 by Arturia i finally bought an S88 Komplete Kontrol and the Komplete Kontrol software together with it is the probably the best experience you can have with a MIDI Keyboard. If you got Arturia Synths and Kontakt librarys and even some plugins like Zebralette or Podolski you can switch between the different plugins immediately. You dont have to think of the plugin you want to use for example u can just filter for a bass and set it to Dark characteristic and it shows every preset of every VST you got with even a Preview. THIS is the future of VST and MIDI Controllers.

    It is mid June 2020. I see you like the 61 key keybed line! That is what I have narrowed my choice to. I have been looking for a 61 key keyboard in the $200 to $300 range. The Novation Launchkey 61 Mk 3 will come out soon. $260 in the USA when it comes out. So no reviews yet. It seems to have some attractive features like playing chords and arpeggios very easily. The Native Instruments A61 is $280, but reviews on Sweetwater ranged from rave reviews to nyuk. Both of them are kind of large depth-wise. So I have chosen to order an M-Audio Keystation 61 Mk III; will edit this comment to let you know how it feels and functions. A 49 key-bed suits my desk better, really, but I would be deprived of the keys C2 onward, one whole octave. I really like the sound of C2! So I though, heck, I'll manage just fine with a larger 61 key-bed. For now I just need a simple keyboard controller to do online piano lessons so I think the M-Audio Keystation 61 Mk III would be just right, plus almost $100 less than the Native Instruments or the Novation ones.
    All these years, I've only played my upright regular piano and love the somewhat heavy feel of the keys; plus, no clacking sound when playing the keys. I'm kind of nervous about the clacking sound of the keyboard I've heard on some videos on the M-Audio. On one video a guy played a Gliss(ando) on the M-Audio and the rattling of the keys was horrible like grinding dentures! Whereas on my regular piano, all you can hear is the notes. Anyhow, I'm kind of a beginner so I doubt I'll play glisses for a few years! :)

    If anyone wants to plug in 9 Volt power supply into any of these, please CHECK THE POLARITY. On my M-Audio Keystation 61 Mk3, the plug has to be TIP POSITIVE, SLEEVE NEGATIVE. Otherwise the 9 Volt supply won't work! Such a power supply is handy to connect to an iPad as those devices don't put out enough power out the Lightning port to power a keyboard. I just bought, from Amazon, a multi-volt adjustable power supply. The device's name starts with Belker 45 W Universal. Excellent.

    • @StephenOrion
      @StephenOrion 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They’re all similarly good keyboards. If you’re gonna use Ableton more, Novation has the best integration out of those 4. If you use more native instrument softwares with NKS standard, then Kontrol series. Arturia is like he said, really value for what you get back. Note that the Kontrol series is well integrated with the Arturia softwares too. I’ve personally used Nektar. They’re probably the cheapest. If you want to get started and plan to upgrade in 2-3 years, Nektar will do you fine. Their integration with most DAWs are really versatile. It doesn’t have the best Keybed or pads out of the 4, and some components could break after a few years. But their customer service is reliable - giving free pad replacements, free knobs, just a lot of free or cheap replacement parts if something goes wrong. So there you go. It all depends on what you value more.

    • @darkwebnightstalker9298

      if you want a real answer the answer is simply buy a electric keyboard with 61 or more keys that cost around the same price or cheaper. Most standard electric keyboards cost around 150 and they have a huge amount of buttons that you can program to do whatever you want to in daw programs like presonus, ableton, Fl studio, reason, etc.
      Whenever you buy a keyboard you want a huge amount of buttons but most MIDI controllers that have the amount of buttons that you need cost around 500 dollars.
      As for the software Abelton is just garbage a reason most MIDI controllers come with it. I recommend Presonus studio/artist its the easiest daw software to use. Something like reason is just garbage and something like FL studio is just a jumbo piece of shit that is extremely complicated to navigate thru.

    Perhaps not related to this video it is to midi keyboards in general… Why would weighted keys be better than semi weighted or unweighted for someone that will never play an acoustic piano?

    • @schoo9256
      @schoo9256 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The heavier the key, the easier it is to feel how hard you are playing the note, to control that sensitivity, and receive feedback about the sensitivity. Unweighted keys are harder to control physically, i find if i am not careful I always end up accidentally playing them too hard because there is no resistance. And thus it helps you control whether your midi note will register as soft or loud. It makes playing music a more pleasurable experience for me, too, because there is a physical element to it, not just aural.

When you plug in any keyboard most daw software allow you to program all the buttons to do whatever you want to. Even if you buy an midi controller you'll have to program the buttons in programs like ableton which comes with every MIDI controller but ABLETON IS A CRAPPY DAW SOFTWARE, you need a Daw like Presonus to get music created quickly and easy.

    • @batmandalorian5504
      @batmandalorian5504 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't matter what MIDI controller you connect to Garageband; if it is class-compliant it will work. However, it is important to understand that it will only be the keys / notes and pitch / mod wheels that work. You can play the built-in instruments with your controller but Garageband does not allow for transport controls, pads, rotary encoders or faders to be programmed to anything.
      If you are using an Arturia Keylab you will still be able to have full functionality of the Arturia Analog Lab and synths using all the controls on the Keylab. Same with any other VSTs/AUs you have in your system; if a Plug-in allows for programming you can program it. Just not the Garageband ones, or Transport Controls. You will need Logic or any other full DAW for that.
      Sidenote, you may find that there are some controls that work with Garageband; I had an Akai MPK49 that the entire A-bank of encoders would control the active Pan and the A-bank of faders would control the active channel volume. But again I couldn't actually program them to do so. It was just sort of a fluke.

    Perhaps someone can help me out: I'm a songwriter/composer who's always dealt with real/acoustic instruments, and I'm about to watch this video to understand MIDI better. There are questions in my mind, such as: having a Casio Privia from 2006 (full length, weighted keys) do I stand to benefit much from getting a smaller MIDI, like the Akai MPK Mini MKII, other than portability? The Privia does have a MIDI connection, which I've used to play the sounds built into GarageBand (planning to switch over to Logic Pro X and make real tracks, not just demos).

    • @victorbarnes6898
      @victorbarnes6898 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have two keyboards set up in my studio. One piano action and one synth action. The reason is that trying to do horn stabs on a piano action is a challenge but on a synth action, it's easy. I also can't play a Hammond sound well on a piano keyboard because those keyboards aren't designed to slide as effortlessly as on a semi-weighted keyboard. You need both types of keyboards. Now if you don't play keyboards, then who cares if you even have a keyboard? Any form of MIDI-assignable buttons would work and the only reason to get a keyboard is that the keys are buttons and you get more of them for cheaper. Edit: The Roli would be great for violin/sax like articulations. For solo instruments, the Roli keyboard is impossible to beat. Edit II: The Akai keybeds feel like crap. Too springy so they push back on your fingers.
