I come from a game loving family, so i was excited to hear your variant. . However, I repeated this video twice and listened attentively. . And I was LOST! . . When it comes to game rules, I always follow best by actually seeing the game be played and see how it unfolds. . Update this video by adding a couple other players (even stuffed animals. Lol ) . . And go through the motions of how to play by your rules . . I feel like the majority of people these days are visual learners. . Thx for the video.
Thanks for the feedback! I did end up putting together a video recently with updates to the rules and it is somewhat more visual. You can watch it here th-cam.com/video/3JWH7mTtU4k/w-d-xo.html It was very off-the-cuff, so I could clean it up more in the future but the rules are a quick read if you haven't checked them out yet as well docs.google.com/document/d/1wiXA7jXbjGZincfOySeVLtWuMEmUh4Wf77pNVosuISs/ Hope that helps and that you have a great Christmas :)
I should also mention that when playing the game, you don't need to explain the rules to everyone, you can just walk the first few players through a turn, telling them their options along the way. It's very simple in action and people will catch on quick. It will go something like.. 1st player: Choose a gift and unwrap it 2nd player: Choose a gift and unwrap it, and then decide if you want to keep it or swap gifts with the first player. beyond the 2nd player its the same: Choose a gift and unwrap it, and then decide if you want to keep it or swap with any of the previous players. If so, the player they swapped with gets the option to swap with someone else, and this cascades until someone decides not to swap (keeping in mind you cant swap with someone who already swapped that round)
If the cards were placed in envelopes, you could keep the values secret until the tally portion. We are adding an extra gift to our White Elephant exchange this year. We have a member of the exchange who is not good at gifts and someone gets something lame. We are trying to figure out how to add that option for the extra gift for the person with the lame gift without making it obvious. I was considering going with the normal rules for the exchange portion (numbers draw from a hat) but then adding in a rigged name draw at the end.
Wow I actually love the envelope idea. It really gives "Letter to Santa" vibes as well, I'm going to try that this year. 😁 That's an interesting problem, I actually played with an idea that punished the worst gift giver by having the cards always go with the gift that is traded (just like in my current rules) but then rather than cards being used to grant a benefit, they would be used to "track" the most traded away gift. Whichever gift ended up with with the most cards would usually be the worst gift. Whoever bought it would have to fess up and do a gross shot of some kind or some other punishment haha. Instead of the punishment, you could still do this method but then whoever ended up with that gift would get your extra gift
I love this ruleset! I would only make 1 tweak. I think giving all of your cards is too much. as it effectively removes you from the chance of winning the pick at the end. I would therefore deal everyone 2 cards at the beginning and then have a random number generator decide how many cards they have to give up every time they steal (from 1 to their number of cards). I think this way doesn't discourage stealing as much, while still limiting the amount of complexity added.
Yeah I was considering a different amount but I also wanted to keep it very very simple. I played around with a few ideas but it's tough to find the balance of adding rules without extra fiddliness or components. This seemed to work best so far, don't forget you will also get cards back if someone later steals from you ;) I think a randomizer would work really well I'm just not sure of a simple/non-fiddly way to do it.
Too complicated 😅 Would rather establish a consensus for the price of the gift and right after - pick a name from a hat. Don’t say who you got. Lastly, wrap without disclosing givers name on the outside of gift. Place givers name inside instead. Open gift Christmas Eve - together. 😊
I put together a short, updated, how to play video here 👉🏻 th-cam.com/video/3JWH7mTtU4k/w-d-xo.html
enjoy! 🎅🏻
