    This was one of my early memories. My father at the time was part of the RAF Mountain Rescue, and was called out to attend in a support role. I remember him showing me a diagram of the cave in the newspaper.

    Good luck to those that do it but stories like this are why you'd never get me caving. The though of squeezing through tight passages , arms at my side just waiting for the moment I get stuck, unable to breathe makes me feel queasy just thinking about it

    • @markgohl2660
      @markgohl2660 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As someone who used to cave regularly. Getting stuck is quite hard to do and takes either effort or in the case of the guy who got trapped here a fall from height down a shaft combined with very bad luck. I once took a guy who claimed to be claustrophobic on a caving trip. I choose a place called Great Douk which is an easy active stream passage with no tight squeezes climbs sumps or other serious obstacles but still had some nice formations. He had a good time and has a nice selection of photographs to show his friends.

    @keith edwards. Watching this, how did they do it back then, they did this in pitch darkness maybe a torch 🔦 per person? I don’t understand how you can go through those tight gaps and so far from the cave opening? I caught covid 3 years ago in the first wave and watching this gave me the panic when I was finding it hard to breathe. The logistics of a rescue so far into a cave, so hard to understand it. Amazing humans can do some real amazing things, but I’d prefer to stay Mr Average lol. 😂

    • @CaverKeith
      @CaverKeith  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. Early cave explorers used candles. When I started we used old miner's lamps. Modern LED lighting is much brighter. We also always take backup lights.
      Statistically caving is very safe with very few accidents each year. However, you are correct that the logistics of cave rescue are complex. It is cavers who rescue fellow cavers and in a large rescue call-out in South Wales in 2021 over 250 unpaid volunteers turned up to assist in a successful rescue that took over 50 hours.

    So, guy goes down a hole and gets stuck and dies, and others think "Hey, let's follow him" ?? Seems like a good idea!!

      No-one else went down that passage, other than the rescuers trying to help Neil 60+ years ago, if you watch the video the cavers are going past that area, not 'down' it. It's a very large cave btw, people used to live in the entrance where the show-cave tours start & it's been explored for hundreds of years.
