Motion: ‘Apolitical humanitarianism’ describes traditional notions of humanitarianism, where humanitarian organisations value impartiality, neutrality, and recognition of state sovereignty. ‘Rights-based humanitarianism’ is often political, with its proponents willing to take stances in conflicts and neglect state sovereignty. For example, during the Nigerian Civil War, the International Committee of the Red Cross respected the Nigerian government’s decision to end the famine by disallowing agencies to provide food to the seceding Biafra. Another NGO, Oxfam, disregarded the Nigerian government’s directive by supplying aid to Biafra.
