    that scene when the one woman's body is getting eaten and the other woman watching silently through the night vision. Absolutely terrifying.

    You guys saw the EU version. The ending of the US and EU version are the same, except that the US version cut the last 30ish seconds. After the ghost jumpscare the US version cuts to credits, whilst the EU version implies that she is still in the cave and she is slowly losing her mind and will be stuck there untill shes dead.

    The ending of The Descent isn't weird at all... 10:39
    She's stuck in the cave and there's no way out, so she has a pleasant memory, of her daughter, basically she has lost her mind by the end of the movie, sad but true.

      +PimDiffy That was the American version. The real version had her still trapped in the cave, waiting for her death. When the film came to the US, they cut the final scene, and used her survival to make a sequel, without director Neill Marshall participation. I stick with the original uncut ending

    The girl who stabbed the other was having an affair with the main character's husband. The woman who was stabbed revealed a necklace to the main character which proved an affair was going on. The main character wanted revenge for that.

      All that, and her husband and daughter died in an accident while returning from a tryst weekend (smart dude, take your daughter to extramarital weekend--high morals there) with Juno, and Juno was the one who tricked them all into taking a riskier path so they could all spend time together, and I think, not sure, but it was the leaving the other to die in pain that really pushed things. One almost wonders if Juno wasn't waiting for her to rebuild her life so she could swoop in again. She seems the worst sort of friend, faux-brave adventurer who shakes apart without her friends to milk off of. I almost think, had they both gotten out, Juno would try and act like everything was all cool now.

    I actually liked the conflict between the Juno and Sarah (if I am getting their names right). I believe the filmmakers knew damn well that Juno killing the other girl was an accident but played Sarah and Juno against each other to show the chaos of the situation. It is just another way that things are spiraling out of control and getting consistently worse in the cave.

    The European version has the ending with her in the cave remembering the birthday party while the monsters crawls around her. The US version has the ending with her escaping in the car and truck drive passed her. They did it like that because the US audience would like that she got away.

    The Descent is one of my favourite movies and in my opinion the scariest movie since the dawn of the 2000's. I feel like it belongs with Horror classics like The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Alien, and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

      ***** It does bother me that some people didn't care for It Follows on concept alone. Though I thought the concept was interesting and well executed. A cute throwback to '80s Horror tropes that manages to be topical in today's society.
      I also thought It Follows delivered on the scares. It's definitely one of the film's strengths. That and the eeirie atmosphere that appears very dream like.

      +Erik Gruber See, I don't think that's the main objective of a horror movie. It's a major element, but it's stifling to say that's the "main objective," as most of the time, it may just to present a monster, or situation that is out of the ordinary, but not necessarily fantasy.

    • @poego6045
      @poego6045 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Harley Dirk I've never understood the hype. It was a forgettable flick where the ending was unsatisfying (I hate survival stories where no one survives, cuz it feels like I wasted an hour and a half of my life, especially when nothing comes of it. Like, if there was an ancellary character that took something from this whole experience or some effect on the outside world, I'd understand, but when it's isolated like this, it feels like a waste). The "monsters" were just hairless people, and you could barely make out what was happening the entiire movie. Lack of lighting isn't inherently scary.

      Mike's just a loud guy, my best friend is like that, it's not malicious at all, James just talks small like I do. They understand their conversational selves. I think that people who aren't the 'James' in a set of friends might not understand the dynamic of the talking over someone. I see a lot of just knowing each other enough that they don't necessarily need to hear the rest of a statement all the time.

    I see an aspect of this movie as this, the main character is having a descent into madness after the tragic car accident.

    I really wish you guys would've rewatched this one again before reviewing it. Lots of mistakes and lots of completely missing some plot points. You didn't mention that Juno was having an affair with Sarah's husband and that's why she stabbed her and left her to die. And I also disagree with this movie pulling a From Dusk Till Dawn. That movie did a complete 180. This movie on the other hand doesn't really change much. Yes, there's creatures now. But it's still just about them trying to get out of the cave. They were just another obstacle. Also the original ending was her waking back up inside the cave which is a brilliant ending. The American one didn't come until later when they decided to release it in America and they thought the original was too depressing. There's only one real ending to the movie so they knew EXACTLY how they were going to end it. That ending is amazing for a number of reasons. She has one last bittersweet memory of her daughter and in her catatonic state the camera pans back and you can hear the creatures slowly closing in on her as she doesn't seem to mind she's about to die because she's going to be with her daughter again. It's a harsh ending having them all die but a great one. There are NO other endings and there was only one shot by the original filmmakers. The shitty American studio is who edited the original ending. Oh and Descent 2 never happened. It is a sequel to the American ending to the film so it's one of those what if type of movies. The original ending makes it impossible for a sequel.

      Also, she was half psychotic after climbing out of the pool of blood and killing all the monsters. The only thing that bothered me was why the other girl couldn't explain the killing was an accident but in her state would she even have listened? Anyway, truly horrifying ending.

    I really enjoy all of these video, the whole monster madness series alway great. But this video is a mess and very frustrating in the future they really have to watch the movies right before or close to before they have the discussion.
    60% of this is them just trying to remember the movie right, and getting all sorts of things wrong. And trying to figure out what each of them remembers to a point were its hard to watch and super super frustrating. Besides that I look forward to the rest of the videos. It's just unforunate this one is a such a disaster/mess. I saw it in the at cinema and remember a completely different ending. All well. Still enjoy the hell out of all these videos keep up the good work James and Mike!

      +Meavy Hetal i'm not sure but did Sarah escape from that old mine cabin before she came in the hospital? because that was the place where the old guy and the cop with his dog where looking. i think that the beginning of part 2 stil works after the european cut of part 1. that Sarah didn't escape from that hole (and found her car) but stayed in the cave. and later she escapes for real (out of the mine cabin perhaps). any way, i didn't like part 2. it's a fun creature feature and much better then ther cave. but descent 1 is still superior in every way.

    • @Stefandorf
      @Stefandorf 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Meavy Hetal you're right :) i prefer the original. not only because it's more original but also because it doesn't force me to watch the sequel. not that it's garbage or something like the sequel to silent hill :P i just wish that descent 2 did it different but just as good in its own way like Aliens. it would be great if descent 2 (or maybe a 3th film) took place in the past where mineworkers find a hidden tunnel that leads to the crawlers. and they must survive with old equipment. now the envoriment isn't just caves but more like mine-tunnels with rails, elevators..etc. Aliens and Temple of Doom combined :P

  • @hellsfoxes
    @hellsfoxes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    The European ending is the true ending. She escapes. Cries, watches a truck drive go by, then turns to see her friends ghost. THEN wakes back up in the cave. It was considered too dark/depressing for American audiences so it was changed to the 'jump scare' ending for US release (ends when the ghost appears). The original ending was restored for the uncut DVD.
    I'd urge you guys to see it again. The monsters and ending are perfect realisations of the themes. The whole experience is a metaphor for her dealing with the trauma of losing her husband and daughter in a car crash. The monsters become projections of her own internal struggle threatening to destroy her. In the end, she doesn't physically escape the cave, but in the act of discovering her friend was having an affair with her husband and taking revenge, she is able to exorcise her demons and win back her soul.
    The US ending just blows and doesn't mean anything.

    Usually like these conversational reviews, but James and Mike totally missed a lot of key points. The reason why they were all so upset with the one chick was because the film indicated that she was having an affair with the main character's husband before he died and that he wrecked the car because he wasn't paying attention to the road because he was looking at her.

    This is personally one of my favorite horror films, especially the haunting score reminiscent of "John Carpenter's The Thing". A few things ...1) The catalyst for the women to go spelunking was to reconnect with each other, especially after the one lady lost her husband and child. 2) They all began to turn on the one woman because she was reckless, leading the group into an unexplored cave instead of the know, touristy one. And by the end they were losing their minds and turning on each other. 3) The ending is pretty clear, especially the "dream sequence " of her getting out of the cave, since it looked like she was climbing a stair of bones to way out. And when she wakes up still in the cave, it's a sense of hopelessness and dread when she focuses on a pleasant image of her daughter and the birthday cake, succumbing to her insanity. You can even hear the creatures closing in as the camera pulls away, knowing that her fate is sealed.

      PixelJoe It's not a footage movie either. I'm talking about those movies like Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity. Making alternate endings to those types makes no sense at all. They are supposed to be like "we found this video camera from the rubble after the incident", but alternate endings is like "we also appreciate that the person who filmed the footage died several times so we can make more content on the blue ray release".

    I loved how many elements were in this film. You have the basic friendship between the girls, adventure of cave diving, the whole conflict between the main character and Juno for having an affair with her husband, the suffocation effect, then obviously the monsters. Betrayal also between the characters. Great flick.

    The film The Cave came out 22 days after this was released. It shared a similar premise except the creatures down there were winged, had the ability to fly. Except when attacked by these creatures if you were to survive, you became infected and would turn into one of them. Definitely worth a single watch!

    I think James and Mike kinda missed the point of the movie. From what I remember, the whole point was to make people wonder whether the monsters were real or caused by claustrophobia and descent into insanity. I always thought that was rather obvious. Even the name of the movie hints at that. The different endings are there so you can draw different conclusions, and choose which one you prefer. It's one of those movies where you need to read between the lines to enjoy it. If you start taking everything the movie shows literally, like Mike obviously did, it gets ruined.

    +Cinemassacre To clarify the angst between Juno and Sarah: (Spoilers ahaed) In the beginning, The story opens on a rafting trip somewhere in possibly England. (Car in accident scene is Right-hand Drive) Setting up the hint that Juno, and Sara's husband, Paul, could be more than friendly.. The car accident where Sarah is the sole survivor, happens after that. Sarah and Paul have a saying "Love Each Day" >>> Skip forward.. One year later, In the Appalachians in the U.S., Juno, (the "Guide") tells the group that they are going to Borham caverns, when in fact she takes then to an unexplored cave system. >>> The cave in occurs, and They take comfort in the "flight plan" that was filed by one of the the team. Juno reveals that they are NOT in Borham caverns, but instead this new cave system, and that there will be no help coming because the "Flight Plan" was wrongly filed. This sets up the tension and mistrust between Juno and the rest of the team . >> After one of the appearances by the sub-terrestrials, Juno is quite spooked. Beth inadvertently comes up behind Juno, and Juno reacts by swinging her pick thinking that Beth is another sub-terrestrial. The pick goes fully into Beth's neck. Beth grasps At Juno, pulling off Juno's necklace which has a charm on it. Juno turns away in shock or shame, leaving Beth to die. >>> Later, After more of the team are killed, Sarah finds Beth in the S.T.'s food cache, still clinging to life. Beth says It was Juno. who did this to her, and pleads with Sarah to killer her. She doesn't want to experience being eaten alive. But before she dies, She gives Sarah the charm that she snatched from Juno. Sarah looks it over, and inscribed on it is "Love Each Day" Beth chokes out an apology for not telling Sarah of the affair, between Juno, and Paul. Sarah grants Beth's dying wish with a large rock to the head. >>> Two left.. Sarah, and Juno. Who have been separated. The run into each other after Sarah has been very well traumatized after several run-ins by the S.T.'s. Sarah "gets even" by revealing the charm, and the fact that she now knows of the affair. and then slicing Juno's leg, and crippling her with a pick. Now leaving Juno to die. >>> Sarah finds the exit, escapes, drives off In Juno's Bronco-II And stops along the road to have a cry. She hallucinates Juno's bloody form in the passenger seat. BAM.. She wakes in the cave, with the memory of her daughter and the cake.. Fade, End.. There was a sequel.......

    I think the monsters in the movie are hallucinations.
    At least, according to IMDB, the director suggested that idea and said a cutscene implying it was removed.
    The woman (whom husband and daughter died) was descending into madness seeing the monsters.
    She takes pills, she sees her dead daughter, in the original ending she dreamed the escape, etc.

  • @MagSun
    @MagSun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I very much agree with your review!
    The movie is well executed to create the feeling of claustrophobia. The monsters are....there. It's not what makes it bad in my book.
    The story is (as in many horror movies) a sequence of bad decisions. I bet no climber or cave explorer would go in there with half experienced people, use ancient equipment sticking in a wall, etc.
    For the "Juno is the..."-part. The conclusion is so bad! I imagined they make it to the exit and Sarah had to help Juno up but maybe lets her die for what she did. But the vengeful killing? It's like they didn't know where to go or the end of budget.
    We have "The descent 2" but didn't want to watch, because part 1 was so stupid....

    Spoiler for the ending to The Descent:
    There are two main endings: the original UK version, and the US version. The original UK ending sees her think she's escaped but it's a dream and she's still stuck in the caves; she'll never get out. Someone decided that wasn't upbeat enough so it was re-shot for the US release where she *does* get out.
    There's a sequel, spun off from the US ending. Don't bother watching it unless you're really interested, though: it's not great.

    Two endings: The American ending involves her getting out of the cave, getting into the car, and just narrowly missing getting hit by the truck. This spawned the sequel. The European ending is where she ends up trapped. Considering the sequel sucks and is completely unnecessary except for one scene near the end (and has an even worse ending than the American ending of the original), I definitely prefer the European ending.

  • @SaltTheFries86

    Noobs ;) I was about to corrrect you with the ending, but James was able to recall it correctly. The American ending - the only other ending ended with a scene in which Sarah sees ghostly version of Juno in the car. So it doesn't segue again to the cave and the dream-like vision of her daughter, etc. I disagree about how the betrayal thread was handled in this film. It was handled very well, it was very believable and complex. Juno didn't of course mean to kill that girl Beth, but she refused to help her, and then she might have been genuinely sorry, but when Sarah confronted her about it, she flat out lied, because she was very, very afraid. And then Sarah went into a cognitive dissonance mode and had to vent out all those previously built up emotions. Beth told Sarah about the accident in such a way as if Juno killed her on purpose. She didn't. But she left her on purpose. So it was a very complex kind of misunderstanding. And Juno didn't want to leave caves without Sarah, which might be that a) she either wanted to make herself look like a good guy or b) genuinely cared. Which makes the ending even more tragic.But there was a theme of duel and character transformation going on through this film: Juno was brave and fearless but she ended up being scared shitless by the end of the film. And Sarah, completely the opposite. Kind of like Jo and Mario in French classic Wages of Fear.BTW I could summarize the whole thing as an all-female subterranean version of Deliverance.

    You guys are good at what you do, but a major problem with how you do it is the fact that you two continuously cut each other off over and over again. I don't think it annoys or bothers either of you since you both seem used to it and it doesn't destroy the product, but it's unprofessional and makes Cinemassacre look below other well-timed review channels involving two or more persons. Again, it's really no big deal, but the fact that I noticed it means others can and maybe the overall channel could benefit from scripted reviews where both of you know your timing. You could have one camera shoot a close-up on whomever is talking to make it seem more appropriate. I know you're both film majors and you know what you're doing, I'm just a fan who believes in Cinemassacre and would like to see it perform at the highest quality. Thanks.

    I feel bad saying this... but the way Doug Walker feels about "The Matrix" basically sums up the way I feel about "The Descent." Overrated, uneven, pretentious and ultimately shallow but pseudo-intellectual enough to make the average audience member feel "smart" for "getting it."
    I feel like it blew up only because it was a "right place, right time" situation and it made audiences feel cultured to say they liked a non-Hollywood horror film.
    Maybe the hype killed it for me... but I'll never quite understand what people see in it.
    And I'm not saying this as a hater. The movie itself isnt atrocious. And the director Neil Marshall also made the quite-good "Dog Soldiers", so I am something of a fan. But this did absolutely nothing for me, and his two follow-up films were equally if not more so troubled.

  • @BenRangel

    Many people are now saying the Descent is one of the best horror movies of the 00's and even of all time.
    I'd say that it's one of the most genuinely scaring, the sense of terror is great and the way they use jump scares is better than most other modern movies.
    But like these guys say: it does not really feel like it has a solid story idea. So I have a hard time placing it among the greats of all time.
