    When my daughter lived at home, I made it a rule that there had to be at least ONE perfect view when using any room. Like if I sit on the sofa, it can be messy behind me. Kitchen: the “hidden” counter around the corner, don’t care; it should look clean when I walk by. Group the mess- ALWAYS.
    I described this as needing a place for my eyes to rest. That absence of this was incredibly stressful. She didn’t get it, but it’s exactly what you’re saying- visual clutter is draining.

    Thank you so much for putting this information out there! As a semi-professional organizer, I believe decluttering comes first. I don't think people realize the negative impact 'too much stuff' has on them. Clutter produces so much negative energy! Let it go.....be free.

    I lived for 31 years in an old house with a small garage. Now for most of those year, maybe not the first give, we could nor use the garage. But not because of clutter but because I turned it into the place we stored all the plants that would´t survive the cold Swedish winter! So no clutter at all but a lot of plants, lots and lots 😂 Love your content! Get inspired every time to declutter or just clean if I can’t find any clutter! 💕

    This actually is a lot like how some of us grew up in and got so used to abuse, chaos and dysfunction. As they say, it’s the devil we know so that’s what we’d so often choose over and over, even tho it was not good for us at all. But yah. Things. Our things can also mimic this way of being as well. Some things are worse, like bad addictions. Other things are just kind of “not bad enough” to nix. We prob don’t realize tho just how much that “not so bad but not so great” stuff really affects us. (Also that’s what the prior abuse did....warped our brains...quite literally). Had to change what I “can handle” to “just Bcuz I am strong and resilient and can endure so much, doesn’t mean I should keep tolerating it.” It’s a lot like having a cold and not needing a doc. It’s not optimal living but it’s not imminent death for us either. So we often wind up sticking it out in a blasé kind of way. And this is exactly also how some certain abuse works. Our brains go along with our abusers’ gradual “managing down” process. It’s why so many will stay with an abusive person for far too long. Aka the slow, incremental boiling of the frog who doesn’t feel the heat until they’re burning up one day.
    My latest Aha was my bathroom clutter. I thought I had made huge strides but when I gathered it all into just one bathroom, omg. (It’s why I’m moving and downsizing. This place has 4 bathrooms and I had stuff scattered abroad in 3 of them. A little here and a little there etc). Def I was like how does me....just one person need all this hygiene/cosmetic stuff? Oh well. Gotta laugh at it for now. It will be fun using all those products to see which ones I really like and which ones not so much. And since I’m still struggling with who am I REALLY? and what do I like or prefer....I have to sort that all out a bit more I guess for now. I know most folks don’t live like refugees like I’ve done so much of but I feel proud at least to have solved my crappy shower Rod/slow drain tub problem at least. (When others wind up trying to make choices FOR you and it’s a crappy choice). I wondered why I had put up with that particular headache for as long as I did.

      I'm going through a similar process of grouping clutter and discovering hoe many lipsticks I have for example! I'm not even done gathering them all..oh vey.

    • @goodenoughgirl8102
      @goodenoughgirl8102 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MariannaMujica Lol. I only had 2 really old lipsticks. One was very dry and the other made me look like the middle of my bottom lip was injured. 🤣🤣 (Threw them both out). My issues are prob more around great smelling soaps or extra gentle soaps and various bath salts. In the past I struggled with hair removal (Bcuz it was like omg I’m a mongrel and I got so tired of constant hair removal so I tried EVERYTHING. Same with scrubs and body scrubbers and pedi stuff-psoriasis and itchy dry skin).
      Then dealing with psoriasis...so I have lotions for itching and alpha hydroxy creams and spray on “leg makeup.” By now I’ve just decided maybe I’ll wear lightweight pants all summer. Maybe actually getting the psoriasis dealt with would be the best thing tho. Meh. (It takes a lot to keep it all under control Imo with exfoliating and itching and cover ups and so on and those wimpy “scrubs” just don’t really help me at all and others are too greasy etc lol).
      Well sorry that got long again. Lol.

      @@Campfire30 Aw shucks, thank you. 😊 The transition from Cinderella slave girl to “Queen of my own life” really does take quite awhile. When you’re groomed to just be so passive in your own life and everyone just tells you who you are and what you must or “should” do etc. (And they’ll make sure you feel the sting when you don’t comply with them. It’s backwards really. You’re “rewarded” for compliance-or rather they just lay off of some of the abuse for a minute-and you’re punished for attempting to be your own independent unique self. And so you just carry this with you until you realize how wrong it all is and start the work of slowly re-wiring your brain). Instant transformation like that tends to half fry one’s brain. Lol. Me thinks the Fairy Godmother thing...well it’s still quite magical, but it’s not as instant or easy as the waving of a magic wand tho. Ha ha. I WISH. It’s not so easy to adapt quickly to those kinds of life altering changes...even if they’re really good for you. Happy tho. Yes tho. So much better to be here in this better mental state than where I used to be, even tho I have a ways to go with it.

    My father in law has a big double garage and he has never parked is car in it!!!😱😱😱😱. He keeps everything, including broken items that he thinks might be useful some day. He also has a huge attic full of stuff and a house full of stuff. He is going to be selling the house that he has owned for over 46 years and I just don't know how he is going to get it to look presentable. My husband and I moved continents 3 years ago, we sold, gave and donated most of our things, we have needed to buy things again, but we try really hard to make sure that we do one item in one out, two items out is better. I have less clothing now than ever before and it's still too much, so when the seasons change I declutter my wardrobe.

    I think you're confusing causality and correlation.
    Do people who live in clutter have poorer mental health because of the clutter or do they have clutter because of poorer mental health?
    If I have poor mental health and I hear you say that my clutter is making me worse, I doubt that it will be an incentive to start decluttering, rather a reminder of how I'm failing yet again.
    Not to mention the parents struggling with mental health and clutter who now also are stressed out about how their kids are less happy.
    It would be interesting to see if there are any studies showing that decluttering leads to improved mental health. I believe that's the causality factor that you're after here.

      Personally, in my case, the two go hand in hand. I have ADHD as a primary diagnosis with comorbidities of OCD, anxiety, and depression. When my space is chaotic, my mind starts to get chaotic, and vice versa. One tends to follow the other. When I have "control" over my space, I tend to have better "control" over my thoughts, mood, and reactions. I'm currently in the process of regaining control over both as there have been several life changes that have occurred one after the other in the past 2-3 years without much space between for me to get my head wrapped around one before the next thing happened. And you are right, if I am not careful, I can view myself as a failure at times. This is why multi factor treatment plans are so important. Just taking meds isn't enough. Counseling and action are imperative for mental health. Part of that action for me is limiting environmental chaos as much as possible, but it is only one part.

      I completely agree. Especially as a single mom that was then diagnosed with MS and lost my mom a month later.
      I 100% have been more cluttered the last 15 years. I’m finally in remission and starting to declutter.
      I’m finally able to do something, and still have energy to eat mostly without choking.
      Yes, my kids do happen to have anxiety. But the back story is much less about the clutter and more about disease and death.

    • @MiaDanielle
      @MiaDanielle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think that it has to be one or the other. Oftentimes causality and correlation are closely linked. It also makes sense that it would be based on a case-by-case basis. Either way, I 100% believe that your space impacts your state of mind (how could it not?).
