  • Surf legend Chuck Corbett aka the Atoll Man renounces his United States citizenship with no country to his name to live the rest of his days in Kiribati. This is the beginning of our long adventure getting to the elusive Island known as Tabuaeran. After our once a week flight to Tabueran canceled due to a mechanical issue, we were questioning whether or not we'd even make it out to the island of our dreams.

@@visionist7 Hi there, we were never issued with eye protection or protection clothing other than being told to sit on the ground with our backs to the detonation point and cover our face with our hands. At detonation the flash was so bright you could see an Xray picture of your hands over your eyes, scary times looking back.

@@ronholfly that’s terrifying, why did you guys even need to be there in the first place ??? I saw a video about this on vice’s channel. It was a bunch of veterans who did the same thing you did back then and they all had a reunion. Most of the people had health issues including cancer. And a lot of people also died young from the complications.

@@TheEducatedTrucker I was RAF ground crew we serviced the aircraft use during the operation. Consequently we had a grand stand view of the detonation and felt the heat and flash.

I worked and lived there for 8 months and cleaned up all of the military left behind in 2004 and 2005 with Saftey Ecology Corp so there very little military equipment left on the island and it was not bombed during testing there was very little and it was done at sea
