DIY wine barrel pond- with bog filter

  • This diy barrel pond was a little project I was able to complete one Saturday. It was a few more weeks before I added the fish as I waited for the pond to “cycle”. But the build itself (basically the bog filter component) only took a couple of hours.
    The idea of this pond was to provide the sound of water under our bedroom window and keep some more fish- as you know I’m pond crazy!!
    Materials used
    -half wine barrel ( this we already had) can be picked up for between $50-$100
    Container for the bog filter. (I used a small 30L food safe container) cost around $20
    -Some old timbers salvaged from a wooden pallet. (These were used to clad the filter and support it on the barrel)
    -Aquaponic clay balls. (Again this was some material I already had. If I needed to purchase some rocks for the filter I would have used scoria or lava rock as it’s light, cheap and provides plenty of surface area)
    A bulk head fitting. Cost $6
    -A small off cut of 90mm storm water pipe (had this lying around)
    -2 x 90mm storm water caps. $1 each
    A bag of gravel for inside the pond $14
    Small 300L/ hr pond pump $16 on eBay.
    1 x Eel grass plant $7
    1 x Pennywort $5
    2 x Impatient plants $2
    -7 x White Cloud Mountain minnows caught by my daughter in our top pond.
    Tools used
    -Drop saw ( cutting up the pallet timbers)
    -Drill ( with hole saw & normal drill bit)
    -Hammer & nails
    -Hacksaw
    -Tape measure

    This is so simple, I love how you can grow things in the bog filter. I have a half barrel pond beside my bee hive for the bees to drink, it gets feel pretty quickly. I think I’ll try this. The bees may actually prefer to drink from the filter as they love dirty water and places to safely land. Thanks.

      The bees will for sure love the bog filter. During summer they are always up there having a well earned drink.

      @@Ozponds Thanks Mate, I'm going to build this pretty much to your design, I'll maybe not overlap the barrel as much though as I have space beside it that I can use. I'm looking at the pumps on eBay at the moment, could you possibly point me to a suitable one? I have 240v close by as it is close to my pool equipment. By the way where in Australia are you located? I'm Gold Coast.

      Brendan Micallef that’s awesome, it makes me happy 😊 to see someone getting enjoyment out of ponds. To your questions. You can use any submersible pond pump look in the 300-700lt per hour range. I’m down in sunny 🌧 Victoria 😉. If I can be of any more assistance let me know 👍

    I really like this idea, esp as I am really keen to add some fish to my back yard pond, but I am stumped at how to 'retro-fit' this type of filter into my pond area?! I have 'natural rock-look' pond (Universal Rocks Co. ) with a three level waterfall set up; Two pumps, native water lillies and Blue Reed in place, with lots of froggy action; Ideally I want as little disturbance as possible so further "nutting out" is needed!

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is a bit of a puzzle. It’s really easy if the filter can sit somewhere hidden above the waterfall. If not you might consider a pressure filter. Alternatively you could add another small pump and add the filter so it runs seperate from the waterfall. Best of luck 😊👍

    Darn, you put so much work into that little thing. I did a wine barrel pond and it was Jeff Goes Lazy ! Are you from Oz land I mean Australia ? Cool channel. Lot's of interesting pond stuff. Filled with much more work than I can get myself motivated to do. So, it's good to watch others like you do it.

    If I’m making a wildlife pond where there won’t be fish, would this bog filter be beneficial still? Or even work without the fish ammonia to start the cycle? I’m hoping to entice frogs or toads etc.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even in a wildlife pond there is a nitrogen cycle. The decaying plant material will create ammonia. So yes a bog filter even on a wildlife pond can be beneficial, but not a necessity.

    Hi! Very cool channel! Thank you for what you're doing, very cool!
    A small note here. I don't see much point in placing the filter over the pond. This only leads to additional energy costs for lifting the water.
    I also wanted to ask if you used an airlift instead of a pump?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks Oleg. I love the idea of an air lift pump. In this application it didn’t make much sense. The pump is only drawing 5 watts, my smallest air pump on my shrimp tank uses 2 watts. I like the filter above as it keeps the pond nice and compact, makes filter maintenance easier and provides a nice sound/ water agitation as the water falls back into the pond.

    I have a wine barrel pond that needs a filter as it keeps turning green. I have watched several of your videos on constructing a bog filter for small ponds. Why in this video does the filter take water in from the top and then trickle back in the pond from the bottom, whereas in other of your videos you use the opposite pattern (water in from the bottom out from the top? ) Also do you move the bog filter off of the barrel pond before flushing the solids? Thank you!

      There is a few more videos on this pond. You can see how I clean it. This is like an aquaponic filter. I these little ones I tried water over the top and water through the base. It didn’t really seem to make a difference.

    You’ve helped me tremendously with a project I had in my front garden. With this, you drop the solids out of your bog, but what happens when those solids end up in your pond? Or do you catch them from underneath before they fall into the pond?

    • @Ozponds

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Pump the pump”?? Do you mean place the pump? It’s in the barrel and pumps water up into the bog filter, then gravity returns it to the barrel. I’ve cleaned the pump and bog filter once in the last 3 years.

    what gravel are you using? and also in a set up like this , does the flow rate matter ?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The gravel in the actual pond part is just small aquarium gravel. The rock in the bog filter part is aquaponic clay balls. These were used cause they are light weight and I had them on hand. You could use pretty much any type of small rock.flow rates do matter. For a bog filter the slower the flow the better this allows the bacteria more time to work its magic. It also allows small solid particles to sink to the bottom of the filter so they don’t return to the pond. Hope that helps.

    • @JasonBischoff
      @JasonBischoff 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ozponds Is the best way to achieve the slower flow rate a combination of plenty of rock/clay balls and not alot of holes in the PVC pipe?
