I didn't think that you either explained or showed enough of the process, particularity at the end of setting up the system....IE, we saw the bricks holding up the water inlet, then suddenly we see the finished product. I only knew what was going on because I had watched quite a few of your other videos. I think someone seeing this as an introduction as to how to make a small bog filter, would be lost. Other than that, I enjoy your videos and have learnt a lot from them.
Thanks for the feedback. This is one of my first ever videos. I still don’t think I make good ones but I’m trying my best to provide free information that helps people rather than sell them expensive equipment. The more videos people watch the more they will learn. 👍
This has to be my favorite-most helpful video - I liked how you did the thought pattern and showed what you were thinking. Easy to follow and very helpful.
I’m about to increase my pond using a 270 gallon preform. I have a 135gal preform right now. I’ve heard so much about bog filters and watching you set one up confirmed that it is a must and something I can do to get a clear pond. Thanks for filming and sharing. I will be using it as a reference this spring.
I just gotta say- everyone's gotta start somewhere, and I'm sure glad that you did it here. This channel was the first one I saw to directly discuss diy bog filters by name, and I couldn't be more grateful to find such approachable content. For a beginning, this is, well, a beginning lol. But it's apparent that there is expertise here, and this channel has seen great growth and development as its continued. The only other thing I gotta say is, I can't wait for my uniseals to arrive in the post so I can assemble my first little pond ☺👍 Thanks for the inspiration and instruction!
This is so inspiring, thank you so much for sharing. We are moving soon and the new gaff has a pond so I will strive to get clear water. Best wishes to you and yours bud, thank you for the superb videos.
@@Ozponds I have used lava rock in a couple of mechanical filters in the past that worked very well. I am messing with bogs now so I can get away from visible filters at the ponds.
NICE JOB. l take it the pond had no filter before. Forgot to ask you last time about your fish disappearing, what depth would you recommend to stop those pesky birds getting a free meal. l know it looks more natural with varying depths. My current concrete pond is only 6 inches deep but has a net above to stop cats and birds. cheers
Fantastic ideas and thanks for your inspiration. Do you not have to use the uv clarifier at all? Can I use gravel as the media in the holding container as I may not find those clay balls here in South Africa
Hi Kevin, great videos you make, thanks. I'm looking at making a filter out of a wine barrel for my pond. Pond will be approx 2m x 4m and 60cm deep. I'm hoping the wine barrel will be sufficient in size for filter but can I also ask what size pipes do you have both going into and the tap out of your barrel and did you use large rocks or a grid or something in order to keep your clay balls seperate from the solid waste chamber at the bottom? Also, my barrel will be a feature with a copper outlet going back into the pond. What height should the media inside the barrel be and can this pipe be straight out or for flow does it need an elbow as you have done? Thanks :)
G’day Nicole. The outflow pipe is 25mm (1 inch) pvc, although it does reduce down to a standard garden hose (15mm) as it moves to the small urn. To keep the clay balls off the very bottom of the filter I used some nursery seedling trays on some old bricks. This is ok for the clay balls as they are so light. If using rock and gravel I prefer to use large rocks down the bottom and slowly decrease the size as I move up the filter. The large rocks provide plenty of voids for solid waste to settle. The flush out valve is also a 25mm pipe. The pipe connected to the pump is standard 15mm garden hose, I then inserted it into 25mm pvc pipe with the holes in the bottom (I’ve since decided the holes are unnecessary). There is no need to have an elbow I did it more to hide the pipe going from the filter to the urn. I think copper pipe will look fantastic. I hope I answered everything. Good luck with your build 👍
@@Ozponds Thanks so much Kev. Your videos are very informative, not to long and interesting to watch! Keep up the good work! There are only so many ponds you can have in your house though so for more footage you might have to attack your friends houses LOL Cheers
Didn't think keeping a few small goldfish that it would involve so much. I got a free 172 liter pond made one of your filters 30x30X30cm water flow approximately 3.5L minute have 6 small (5cm) goldfish. Nitrite is always high (did water changes) should I make a much larger filter or do I need to get rid of fish. Your videos are great I should have looked at them first! And do calculations ect. Thanks
Nitrite or nitrate? If it’s nitrite something has gone wrong and your not cycled properly. If it’s nitrate yes it simply too many fish or keep doing water changes. I don’t overstock my ponds because it creates unnecessary work for me. To give you an idea this 1000L pond has 7 or 8 goldfish in it. Hope that helps 👍
The clean up drain I just flush periodically. Usually before a rainfall event so the water I flush is replaced. If need be the inlet can also be flushed by forcing a high flow of water through. The solids (dirts) will congregate in the bottom of the filter. Once I open the clean out valve they flow out freely. I hope that makes sense.
Hi Kev… have a 1000gal(3785l) pond. Going to convert a 100 gal stock into a bog filter. Currently have a small box/pump filter much like the one in your video. The pump is a 300gal(1135l)/hr. Will this suffice for the bog filter or do I need a larger pump? Trying to get the flow rate optimized. Btw, this pond had no pumps for 2 years as it was planned as natural pond filtered through plants. Has done well including the 15-20 goldfish. I added the box because I forgot to clean some pebbles and got impatient waiting for the water to clear. Realized I missed the sound of moving water so thought I would add additional bog filtration. Thanks for the videos!
Just a question, I think I know the answer to already, but on another "professional" pond install video, with a bog filter...irrelevant?...the builder describes using 3 copper pipe spillways to transport the water from the bog filter back into the pond. Isn't copper piping use in a fish pond a no-no?
@@Ozponds I just remember using copper sulfate treating various ailments in aquarium fish, but that it was a last ditch, VERY limiting move and lots of aquatic life wouldn't tolerate it in the water. It just caught my ear when he mentioned the three copper water outlets in the pond/water feature.🤔
Hi Kevin. Great video buddy and as I'm new to this pond thing, can i ask you two questions please. First one is what type of media did you put in the barrel besides the large ones at the bottom and 2nd one is, I am running a maxipond canister filter for my pond and i was wondering if i could run a second filter like you just made as well. Do you think that would be a bit of over kill???? Thanks for your time, and thanks for in very informative videos. Cheers
G’day Peter. The media in the top is aquaponic clay balls. This is because I had some from another project. Small rocks or pebbles work just as good. You’ll see some of my other ponds just have entirely rocks in the filter. The rocks provide surface area for nitrifying bacteria, as the water passes up through the bacteria they purify the water. In regards to your second question, you can never have too much filtration in my opinion. But in all honesty these types of homemade filters can totally replace the need for a canister filter. You’ll see none of my ponds use canister filters. Good luck with your pond 👍
I'm getting very much interested in a bog....I'm experiencing some issues right now with my pond and trying to fix it. How is it possible that I have crystal clear water but yet I can't see the fish as it looks murky :(
@@Ozponds I know it's confusing. When I take pond water samples to test it I can see its crystal clear however I cannot see in the pond. Can't see the 11 Koi we have or the bottom 🤔
Is this a new pond? Are you running any filtration? How big is the pond & fish? There’s many factors…That’s only the tip of the iceberg. If you are looking for a quick fix try a pond flocculent to settle the particles that are making the water murky.
Hello. Can you confirm something for me which I've been getting to find out for about 1 week now? I have been doing research by watching video's like your's & looking at advice on the internet like groups on F.B. I have been informed that Pea SHINGLE should be used which IS different to Pea GRAVEL although they are listed as being the same in the shops, I understand that Pea SHINGLE is made out of Limestone where as the GRAVEL is made out of STONE! Does it matter which one I use? Thanks from the UK.
G’day David. It doesn’t bother me really what type of rock I use. It’s just there to grow the bacteria’s. Limestone is known to increase pH. But again I don’t really pay much attention to this, the most important thing is stability. So as long as the pH isn’t jumping all over the place it shouldn’t be an issue for any fish or other aquatic life. Here in Australia my local landscape yard calls river sand pea gravel. I assume your looking at building a Nelson’s bog filter? Just use a small stone that’s approx 7mm in diameter, that’s what I’d do. Hope that helps 👍
You can pump the water directly into the bottom of the filter using a bulkhead absolutely 👍. You’ll want to add a no return valve to prevent the filter draining if the pump stops.
