That anniversary scene just changes from when you were a kid to when you've grown up. Mr Miyagi lost his family, but his friendship with Daniel grows into something greater than teacher and student. And then Daniel quietly bowing in respect before leaving. 👌

This movie was such a big part of my childhood. It never fails to hit me in the feels. And I think it holds up well because they did a good job with the character development vs some other movies that would probably breeze past a lot of little moments in this film. Even the ending where they give the cobra kai students lines that illustrate a bit of their humanity, rather than just leaving them as cartoonish bad guys, really helps round out the film for me. This movie was an instant classic.

Personally, I think Daniel shows how down-to-earth he is, after winning the tournament he says "Hey Mr Miyagi, we did it." He didn't say 'I did it..."
In my city this movie played in the theaters for a very long time, and then they replaced it with something else. About a year later, they started showing TV commercials for it "...in theaters now..." and they brought it back and showed it in many theaters again! Yes, people lined up to see it a second or third time!

The Karate Kid was always one of my 90's childhood favorites! This movie definitely taught some real life lessons like balance as Mr. Miyagi taught Daniel here and yes he sorta DID become like a father figure towards him in a way. I imagine Bruce Wayne (Batman) definitely needed a mentor like him after what happened to his parents. Anyway be sure to do THE KARATE KID PART 2 next asap!

Elizabeth Shue (Ali Mills in the movie) is actually a really good soccer player, she played on boys teams because there were no girls teams back in the 1970's. She made a movie about it called "Gracie". Her brother, also an actor, played professional soccer. For a fun movie with Elizabeth check out "Adventures in Babysitting", for a more serious role watch "Leaving Las Vegas".

It really is. The whole series kind of is. Because, strip away Johnny and Daniel to their core selves, they actually start out their stories as the same kid. Both outsiders, sons of single moms, looking to fit in.
Johnny turned out the way he did because his step-dad turned out to be abusive and his mother died soon after marrying him. Daniel turned out how he did because he not only had a loving mother, he also gained a wise and loving father in Mr. Miyagi.

Johnny: It was the summer of '82. "Rocky III" had just come out. My buddy Dutch was a huge Mr. T fan, so we went to the local theater to check it out. Sitting in front of us was this group of cute chicks, eating popcorn. Dutch started throwing Milk Duds at them.
Miguel: What? Why would he do that?
Johhny: Because it's an alpha move, man. Babes love when you treat them like crap. Anyway, eventually, the girls got so pissed off, one of them stood up and started yelling at us. That's when I saw her for the first time.
    Miguel: Saw who?
Johnny: Ali. She dumped popcorn all over Dutch, got butter all over him. [Miguel giggles] I could tell right away, man, this chick was a firecracker.
Miguel: So did you ask her out?
Johnny: Yeah, I hit on her a few times till she gave me a chance. We went to Golf N' Stuff for our first date. Kissed on the Ferris wheel. We were madly in love. Dated for 2 years. For, uh, Valentine's Day, instead of rings, I gave her this pink jelly bracelet. She gave me this. [headband]
    Miguel: So then what happened?
Johnny: Summer before my senior year, we got into a fight. I figured we'd work things out eventually. Then Daniel LaRusso came to town. Next thing I know, he's hitting on her. I see the two of them flirting with each other.
    Miguel: What'd you do?
Johnny: Well, I walked over to have a civil conversation with Ali. But LaRusso kept butting in. I told him to get lost, mind your own business. Out of nowhere, the guy sucker punches me.
    Miguel: What an [beep]
Johnny: I know, man. I did what any dude would do, I defended myself. You know, I figured that was that. LaRusso wouldn't leave it alone. At the Halloween dance, I was sitting there, minding my own business, he douses me with a water hose. I haven't seen the guy in months. Frickin' turns a water hose in my head! So I chase him down, try to put an end to things that night, right? Turns out the guy's got a karate master of his own. Guy comes out of nowhere, jumps us, assaults me and my friends. I think my buddy Tommy got brain damage 'cause of that fight.
    Miguel: Oh my God.
Johnny: Eventually, we decided to work things out at the All-Valley Tournament. So we both made it to the finals. It was 2-2.
    Miguel: What--what happened? Who won?
Johnny: LaRusso won, I lost. But what's worse is that I lost Ali.
    Miguel: Yeah.
Johnny: Alright, the reason I'm telling you all this is 'cause you gotta watch out for the LaRussos.

Mr. Miyagi and his wife were sent to internment camps during World War II when the United States was at war with Japan. Japanese Americans were held in internment camps and considered enemies even though they were citizens. It was a dark mark in American history. While he served in the military, his wife and unborn child died.

I think an overlooked movie with Ralph Macchio is Crossroads. It's similar to Karate Kid in that you have that father/son/mentor relationship between a lonely old guy and a young guy. The difference here is that this is also a road trip movie and the focus is on the blues instead of karate. :) THere is a guitar duel at the end that is very awesome. .

Love you ladies. If you really liked this series as much as it seemed like you did, then you should watch Karate Kid II and then discover the Netflix TV series Cobra Kai - it shows them all, Daniel, Johnny and many more all grown up.

if they do 2 but not 3 before Cobra Kai later series of Cobra Kai will not make sense, the next karate kid and the remake are the ones that I am not keen on

Cobra Kai is so cheesy and badly-acted. I don't know how any grown adult can watch it and not cringe with embarrassment.

This was a great reaction and I enjoyed re-watching the film with you guys. I recommend that you watch Karate Kid Part II next. It's a bit different from the first film, as the story is mostly about Mr. Miyagi and what happened to him when he was a young man in Okinawa, while Daniel has more of a supporting role. If you liked the first film, you'll like the second one, too.

    Daniel: She's a beaut, huh?
Miguel: Oh. Uh I don't usually see cars like this where I live.
Daniel: That's what I thought too. When Mr. Miyagi gave me this car, I was the envy of all Reseda.
    Miguel: I didn't know you're from Reseda.
Daniel: When I first moved out here, my mom and I didn't have 2 pennies to rub together. Things were different back then. I was jealous of all country club kids like Johnny.
Miguel: Sensei was a rich kid?
Daniel: Yeah, he lived up in the hills. You didn't know that? I'm sure he must've told you all about our time back in high school?
Miguel: He did. Sensei Lawrence told me about how you beat him with an illegal kick.
Daniel: Hey, hey, hey, the rules state anything above the waist is legal. Besides, you used that same kick in last year's tournament, right? What else did Johnny tell you?
    [skip]
Daniel: He said I sucker-punched him? Did he not mention the fact that he knocked me down first?
Miguel: You were moving in on his girl.
Daniel: They hadn't talked in weeks. I had no idea Johnny even existed when I got to that beach. All that I knew was that he broke her radio. She was upset.
    Miguel: Huh.
    Daniel: I was being chivalrous.
Miguel: But what about Halloween? The water hose?
Daniel: What? The water...These guys were beating the crap out of me every other...The water hose was the least of it, believe me. And it was just sitting there. It was so teed up. Trust me, if you were in my shoes, you'd have done the exact same thing. Johnny clearly overreacted to that.
Miguel: I think Sensei was just upset because Ali was his first love.
Daniel: Well, she was mine too. There was just something about her. I thought she was the one. I guess Johnny felt the same way. And that's what started all this.

What the blond instructor is teaching his students is Bushido.

    1. The Karate Kid
    2. Karate Kid part 2
    3. Karate Kid part 3
    4. The Next Karate Kid
    5. The 2010 remake staring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan

Karate Kid 1, 2 and 3 are necessary before the "Cobra Kai" series.
"The Next Karate Kid" has Mr. Miyagi but not Daniel. He trains Hillary Swank to defend herself.
2010s "The Karate Kid" (kind of a reboot) has Jackie Chan as the Mr. Miyagi character but named Mr. Han.

I think this might be the best reaction you guys have done so far. Or at least my favorite. You all were so invested in the movie and it came through so strong. I hope you choose to continue the series and do Karate Kid II and III and then start on the Cobra Kai series. They're all amazing. I tried to get Magy to do them too, but she hasn't gotten to any of them yet.
