I had the same issue with my ram at first. You just need to drill out your power steering pump piston just a little bit bigger to allow more flow and then add a washer or stretch out the spring to give pressure back. Bleepinjeep has a video showing how to do it. Super simple and won't cost your a dime
I just did a 2003 tj. I think your hoses are backwards. I'm gonna be posting a vid on what I did. Nobody has any videos about this. I'm glad to see you did.
Hey Dex, I don't think anyone mentioned this yet. The idea to stiffen the gear box output shaft might not be too bad. I had a 2004 Ram 2500 4x4 diesel that I put a front frame stiffener kit on it. It basically ties front frame rails together but it comes with a pillow block bearing set up that connected below the pitman arm. Worked great on those trucks. Look it, you might have an idea to make something like that work for the XJs. Just an idea, good luck.
Your right. That torsion bar returns after it flexes. That's really smart, i bought all aftermarket bull from different brands but good stuff. Stuff i could sneak on in one day..... now the death wobble keeps me from using my rig. Nobody has found anything loose but they Damn sure took my money. If any of ya'll live in El paso Texas and know first hand of a good shop please lemme know. The two i chose to do stuff had great reviews but didn't deliver.
We use those same fittings at work to make grease lines. Left hand thread into the hose. I can blow them apart with a grease gun. Awesome video thought! 👍🏻👍🏻. Learning experience.
I know youre the wrong person to ask this silly question to... But, Did you modify the restriction port for more pressure ??? 3/16 hole if memory serves correct for hydro assist
Nah i got some death wobble from hell. Everything is new. You have my permission to make videos with my jeep lol. I just need it fixed so i can start my recovery services. I ran outta money man. Two different shops ripped me off so my budget was blown. Yup I'm an auto tech by trade but the company i work for is strictly mobile so i have nowhere to work living in an apartment complex in the city, we would be evicted if i got caught doing big stuff and that just ain't worth it. It's got a 4.7l stroker if you wanna comparev to yours😂
to get the clip out around the end cap without cutting, there is a hole around the end that you can insert a punch...hammer the punch and the clip will start coming out. then use a screw driver and wedge out
Random question... But how many 2000 freedom edition xjs have you come across?? I seen less than 3k of them were actually made. I only know this because my mother in law gave me her 2000 xj freedom edition. I know its nothing special. 😅 Just curious
@DeXJs are you the guy from Tennessee that has the massive Jeep graveyard/junkyard? If so I NEED YOUR HELP!!! I convinced my son to by a 1993 XJ 4.0 Country, that is fully loaded, power everything, as his first car. It has 150k miles but here is the kicker... It was a ONE OWNER JEEP, towed behind an RV, across the country for 20+ years. It still has the frame stiff hitch mount on the front. It was the grocery getter when they arrived to where they were staying for nearly its whole life, and then stored in a heated storage unit when it wasn't being driven. It is a Florida Jeep and has ZERO RUST, just sun faded paint..!!!!! It runs like a champ, no oil leaks, rear main seal issues, NADA. Its the perfect car for him as his first, where we live (Vermont). There are some issues that we are trying to resolve, in order to make it easy for him to learn, proper maintenance, like checking the oil regularly, coolant, etc. The hood latch releases part# 55074526AD are frozen and shot to hell from the salted air of its time in Florida. Zinc does not like salty air. Ive tried soaking them, walnut blasting, etc.... nothing is getting them to work themselves freely in order to release the hood. I NEED 2 of them as they are identical(as you know) both driver and passenger side. These parts were discontinued in 2002 or somewhere in that timeframe. I cannot find OEM parts anywhere that are new(ish) Would you be willing to help us out with a fix or some parts? We are inching everyday closer to deleting them and doing hood pins... VERY LAST OPTION on our end, but its the most practical to get him on the road and flexing this XJ. We have had several people ring our video doorbell and as if we want to sell it. Its that clean!!! The highest offer so far has been $6500. Should we just take the offer? OR fix and flex the hell out of this XJ? I know what I would do, as I know what he has, convinced him to buy it, and what its capable of. LOL
when you expedite the entry of fluid on one side of the ram, you have to expedite the exit of fluid on the other side, if this does not remain balanced, your going to have problems.
Instead of pulling the fittings out of the steering sector just get JIC or AN cap plugs. Pull the hoses and cap them both lines. You just have to carry the caps.
I’d say you have a flow restriction. Some where in the box the fluid can’t move fast enough more pressure would help a little but be more of a band aid
What about using a hydraulic steering conversion kit for a boat? They are considered safe on very large outboards... You could get rid of the steering box altogether. For off road only of course.
[XJ]Cab fab steering links and ota track bar setup zj pitman... 33s stock axles 3.55 gears, 4.0 ax15 np231 with sye.. the thing is that i cracked the frame where the steering box is.. welded it and put a steering box brace kit.. and i fabricated a link from the trackbar bracket to the other side of the frame... will that be enough to prevent from cracking? I do drive aggressive but is mostly sand ditches i hit or rocks about 8 inches big... im saving up for a rock bouncer but i want this jeep to take the hits and be able to keep going
Looked like you used -6 line and fittings. -8 will alow more flow. More flow= more speed. Also the boar on the cyl may be too large. I don't know what the boar size on psc drill and tap kit is but I have a feeling it's smaller
I always get excited when I see your clips, shots and longs! I was just like you 65 years ago, performing “Canadian tail spins” in my neighbors ‘57 Chevy! Keep these clips coming. At 71, you bring out my youth!! ❤️❤️ Now get to the polls and get TRUMP elected so you keep your freedom and your stuff!!
It would work better if you drill and tap the box in the right spots and you might won't limit the ram or it will tear the box off wen you get the lins on the right spot on the box
39:40 After you make some new hydraulic hoses, try just swapping the pressure relief valve first from the WJ 4.7 and see what happens? Like this guy did ---> th-cam.com/video/_rvLXjHuLpE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RFkok35ZuOiKGJ48
Help me Dex!!! 2000 4.0 I put five thermostats in it and none of them open I know you said in a previous video to just drill a hole in it that way you don't get air bubbles in there but I bled the system out good for days on end I'm going to drill a hole in it next but what the hell man
If you send me a message I can send you some pictures of the way my box is done with no issues turns just as fast as it did factory but has more power in a bind

Used to big of a ram you need a 1.75 shaft and a 6 inch stroke perfect for Dana 30s use them on all of mine
Lemme correct that not 1.75 it's a 1inch shaft
Yea I'm thinking the sizing is off, moves too slow and it's fighting against the pitman arm.
Also you don’t gain much strength when attached to the pitman arm. But strength is axle to tie rod and take lots of stress of the body
Also a bigger pump would help

Wow dex your lady is ride or die literally!!!
That opening scene was wild.

So IV run into this as a auto shop. Power steering fluid is higher viscosity than say dex6 or atf4 transmission fluid. It will help work faster.
Also own a 07 wj and those pumps call for atf4
Inspiring.
Thank you, Dex
Hi Dex .. steering supports bottom of the shaft 100% recommend Pillow Block bearing with turndown support Billet Nut-shaft
I know youre the wrong person to ask this silly question to... But, Did you modify the restriction port for more pressure ??? 3/16 hole if memory serves correct for hydro assist
you have to drill out thecheck valve on the pump to make this work right
Shoutout Corinth! We dont really have anything anyone is looking for!
Easier to drill and tap on the flat side on the side next to the snout
Raise the engine up about 1"

I know youve said everything , but hows your track bar and pitman arm?
What would happen if you put a smaller pulley on it. It would spin pump faster .
I absolutely love my hydro assist. One finger steering.
What size is your ram? You should want a 6 inch travel 2 inch ram. If the ram is bigger than 2 inch then it will be too slow
2 inch outer diameter but what for the shaft ?
to get the clip out around the end cap without cutting, there is a hole around the end that you can insert a punch...hammer the punch and the clip will start coming out. then use a screw driver and wedge out
Would love to hear THAT story 13:38 😅 👍
Psc 1 inch bore 6 inch stroke with psc pump mount ram on axle to the tie rod i run it and its awesome
On toyota pumps you have to drill out the restrictor out on the pump outlet when using any type of ram or the steering is too slow
I've used it a few builds... currently have one on my TJ... turned the 38's with one finger and no bump steer... do you have one on your rock buggy?
You just talked about the rock bouncer steering... lol
the faster you drive i would think the more it will help too, driving slow might feel sluggish but stronger
Have you tried Electric PS? Thinking of trying it, see how it does on an XJ
Technically normal power steering is hydraulic rack and pinion gears.

Hey dex just curious if a smaller ps pump pulley would speed anything up?

take the fittin out of the back of the pump drill it out youll get more pressure
Hey dex I think you should do a video
Cherokee vs a liberty, off road .
don’t you need fluid fittings on both sides of the plunger in the ram? one for left and one for right to push the ram in and out?
Instead of pulling the fittings out of the steering sector just get JIC or AN cap plugs. Pull the hoses and cap them both lines. You just have to carry the caps.
I’d say you have a flow restriction. Some where in the box the fluid can’t move fast enough more pressure would help a little but be more of a band aid
Has anybody used a steering rack as a ram?
How about a larger hydraulic pump !
DIY 4x cap for the end of the box!!!!!! You are welcome!
Diy4x is no longer but he can drill in to the castings instead of the cap and have way better assist..
@@offroadman8387 no way i loved those caps! Glad i have an extra
What about using a hydraulic steering conversion kit for a boat? They are considered safe on very large outboards... You could get rid of the steering box altogether. For off road only of course.
That sounds very slow
wj high flow pump is way faster but needs a cooler
Dex i run through a bottom river doing 50 to 60mph.. any good tips for suspension setup? Ill tell you what i have done in mine

You need a pump just for the ram delete ac
The 4.7 wj pump would be an upgrade but it still needs the orifice drilled out ever so slightly to be upgraded...

Happy Halloween 🎃
Get a high flow pump maybe
Dex, there is an in depth video on hydro assist on Bleepin Jeep TH-cam. I’m gonna look rite now and try to find it. I watched it like o er a year ago.
Watching from Texas with My welded 35.. 😂
You have to upgrade the pump for your steering.
Pretty sure the ram needs to mount to the axle, and drag link
I feel it is the way you tapped the box you should tap the box just to the side of the lines
It has plenty of fluid pressure but not enough volume
Going to break the steering shaft again
39:40 After you make some new hydraulic hoses, try just swapping the pressure relief valve first from the WJ 4.7 and see what happens? Like this guy did ---> th-cam.com/video/_rvLXjHuLpE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RFkok35ZuOiKGJ48

No shit you didn’t like it, it’s the completely wrong ram.. you can just go pull a ram off a random old tractor and expect it to work properly..
Wow, the USA got terrible steering boxes on their left hand jeeps, piston style are the worst of the worst.... 😀
