  • Today I am joined by Cynthia Julian to explore the Blue Idol Quaker Meeting House, set up by William Penn, the founder of both this Meeting House and the City of Philadelphia.
The Blue Idol Quaker Meeting is an historic 17th century farmhouse situated close to the West Sussex villages of Coolham, Billingshurst and Thakeham. The name Blue Idol probably derives from 'blue idle' when the building was blue-washed and left empty for some years.

What a fascinating house. I will have to visit one day. A couple of years ago I did a future learn course on quakers, I found one in my family history and knew nothing about them. It was one of the better courses. Nice to see a sunny summer day too!

What a beautiful place that is. Just down the road from where I used to live but I have never visited; I will have to remedy that!

Aaaaahhhhh!!!!😲😲😲 What a treat this was! I wonder if any of my Buckman ancestors ever attended services there w/ William Penn. They immigrated to America w/ him in the 1682 on his ship The Welcome. Family lore has it that my 10x ggrandmother - Mary Buckman Cooper Strawn - sat on Penn's lap on the journey across & he gave her a seashell to play w/. I read that somebody in the family still possess that shell back in PA. I put all my notes away at Christmastime, I'll have to dig them out to remember exactly where in Sussex it was that they came from. But of course, you have given me yet another place to mark off my bucket list if I ever make it to England!😁🤗

@@RichardVobes well depending on when Penn owned this home, but it is most likely they may have. As little Mary (she was 2 when they set sail for America), her parents, & grandparents all show as being born in Billinghurst (except her maternal grandfather, he was b. in Haughley). These three generations all show as dying in Penn's Pennsylvania Settlers Community. They set sail from Deal, Sussex on Aug 31, 1682. I also have proof of her paternal ggrandfather being born in Billinghurst. I need to save this vid & do some more investigation on the Blue Idol Quaker House. Also, need to go back through your vids to see what you have on Billinghurst!😁😉

I only did a very quick walk through Billingshurst. There is a couple of nice pubs there, though.

There is a fascinating Quaker village in Buckinghamshire called Jordans. Ironically it is also the final resting place of William Penn.

Hi John, I believe I have been there, although didn't video anything. Must return.

Lovely video Richard and Cynthia. It looked really peaceful there. Amazing I thought about going to the meeting there once and used to park my works van here at lunch time. So it's a nice memory, thanks .

Excellent video Richard , I have just watched 3 of your past videos associated with the blue idol Quakers meeting house. I'm currently reading the book you mentioned before Sussex People Places and things by Bernard Price. I was lucky to get a signed hardback of this excellent collection of writings from this columnist. What I'm going to do is accompany this book with the places mentioned and see how the countryside landscape and buildings have faired since the writings. A perfect pairing of what indeed is English. All the best Paul

We have many Quaker meeting houses in Pennsylvania. One is near me. I have actually played a concert in this one twice. After their meeting we went in and played a brass quintet concert and then had a meal with them in their communal room. I loved it. One of my favorite books is “A Quaker Book of Wisdom” by Robert Lawrence Smith.

There is also a small Quaker burial yard tucked away behind some farm buildings just a bit further back along the road to the Blue Idol. It dates back to the 1600's

Oh is there - how interesting. Are they being looked after or abandoned?

@@RichardVobes It looked in pretty good condition when I was there so I would think it's looked after. Perhaps the Quakers that meet at the blue idol are responsible.

Lovely video, thank you. Just a point (hopefully non-pedantic!) on terminology. Quakers don't have services, but meetings. There is an old quip about someone new to a Quaker meeting asking "When does the service start?", and being told "After the meeting ends" (that is, the inspiration of the meeting will lead one to render some sort of service to others).
