If you watch Jubilee videos, they do a segment on mixed people and they talk about how they're so weirdly fetishized and how mixed babies are wanted because people think they're pretty.

      @Josh Segal I thought the discussion in this thread and in your reply was about LANGUAGE, not how they are perceived by anyone.
      It's not odd that someone who's American born or foreign-born parent(s) in America would speak English, but not their parents language (fluently). So it's not odd that someone who's half Korean and lives in Korea would speak fluent Korean. It's the official language there.

      @aprilbennett4161 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Hybrid does sound medical, but the "trying to figure out the features" part is pretty normal. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but, even if you're full-blooded or whatever, it's common for people to try and pick out lineages. "Oh, she has her father's eyes!" "That's his grandfather's hair!" "She has my nose." People are fascinated by heredity, in general.

    • @pyumpkyin1492

      @@aprilbennett4161 Like i said its okay to be curious thats normal. But when you start touching my face and my hair and getting in my space it becomes invasive. Ive never heard that anyone referred to anyone of mixed race as hybrid till now because we usually use that for animals or grafted plants etc. Ive always just been called mixed race and most people are bi racial. I am tri racial which is a hassle to think about so people just say mixed.

      @@pyumpkyin1492 People who do the touching thing have issues respecting personal space, in general. If anything seems remotely unusual or even just fancy, they'll get up in your space with their hands. Being mixed may be more likely to attract them, but no one is really safe. Touchy-feely people are a menace. I've sat in a concert and felt someone touch my hair from behind. Creeped me the hell out.

    • @naomijackson4691
      @naomijackson4691 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Peeps who ask that kind of question are annoying af. If they want to know your genetic background, then they can ask about it, like where were your parents or grandparents from? My friends and I have all asked each other that (I have a friend who's mom is Filipino, one who's mom is Korean, another who strongly identifies as Irish/Italian). But we never say, so where are you actually from? Because we are all culturally American, having been born and raised in America (I actually was born in Germany, but am definitely still 100% American) our whole lives. We would never treat each other differently because of mixed ethnicity. I have a friend who is Japanese, because she was born and raised there, but her children are American, because they were born and raised here. I dunno, it just makes sense that way doesn't it?

America is pretty diverse but those of the minority population still frequently get the "where are you really from" or "wow, you speak good English" . So she's not the only one experiencing this in Korea, and it kinda sucks when people turn around and call Korea racist when America is literally the same towards minorities. Interesting to watch. My experience with my son being half Asian is that a lot of time when I I go in Public with him people ask me “is that really your child?” I say yes then they usually say something like “really? He looks nothing like you. He looks more like me and not you” But that is when I meet older Asian people. Most of the time people are nice and say he is handsome and has beautiful eyes. You can tell he is half Asian now (before he didn’t looked mixed at all) so people ask where his dad is from. My son is two now and I can count on my hands how many negative comments I’ve received, which I think is good. It doesn’t happen very often.

My family have been here so long we are pretty much more native than you, if not equivilant. And I get so mad because you can't just lump Chinese and Asian together in a group and generalise our behaviour based off stereotypes. The stereotypes have no use other than entertainment and it's not a prescribed behaviour where anything less means 'you aren't xxx enough'. Living as a 5th gen is honestly no different than being a person just living their life.

I have always had those identity issues.. if someone asks me WHAT i am.. well i end up telling them where i was born and raised, where my parents are from, where their parents are from, which language i speak better and which culture i grew into more instead of giving a short clear answer because i don’t know any better lol. Another issue is.. people in country-a treat me like im not one of them.. like i don’t belong here.. but when i go to country-b they treat me like i don’t belong there either.. it’s weird feeling like u don’t have a nation that you feel united with/don’t belong somewhere specific.

      Your nationality is "country-a" and your ethnicity is "country-b". For example, if both your parents are from China, but you're born in Mexico, your ethnicity is still Chinese like your parents but you would say you're Mexican by nationality. It's tough being a 2nd gen. immigrant, but hang in there. You're not alone and you'll meet plenty of people who are in the same boat. If not anything else, at least you can bring the best of both worlds! :)

People here are pretty much like people in South Korea although maybe not as annoying as people in SK 😂. In here they at least ask those questions correctly without offending us. I'm a nationalist at the same time so it really much hurts me when the so called "real Indonesian" judges me. I was even wishing to be born not from a mixed family but from a pure Indonesian family back in the day :(. So yeah, it is quite hard to be half-breed because we just sometimes feel not accepted in our own country that we grow up and love just like any other people. This video is really good. Thanks for speaking up :)
