SAN ANTONIO - Everyone has a story. But nobody has one like Chris Perez.
A self-taught Rock n Roll guitarist from San Antonio. Bandmate of Tejano star Selena. The friendship, the romance, the marriage, the Quintanillas.
In a one-on-one interview with Randy Beamer, Perez shares how he got into music, how the music led him to Selena, and what life was like for the two of them. The San Antonio native details how their friendship blossomed into love and also reveals the bond he once had with Selena’s father, Abraham.
He also talks about his ongoing love for music, what he's doing now. It includes lots of music and a little bit salsa. That's salsa as in hot, spicy sauce, not salsa music. In fact, he calls it pepper sauce, and he got into the whole business by accident.
In this podcast, you’ll hear stories you never knew and find out what life is like now for Perez as a father, musician and budding businessman.

You can tell Chris is trying really hard not to talk badly about Selena's family while still honoring his hurt and pain over the way they've treated him. Chris Perez is a real class act. He has all my respect.

That's a fake Chris Perez account. So sad that he had to suffer, not only the loss of his late wife and how Abraham treated him, afterwards. Hope that he's doing well, now with his kids, music and much success with his hot sauce line and he loves to cook. I used to play clarinet and Beethoven.

His love for Selena was real and Abraham could not stand the thought of a man stealing his money making daughter. You can tell Abraham is a miserable man. His body language is very telling. Even more sad is the fact that many of the parents of Star children are not capable of making their own money so unfortunately they become money hungry and see their talented children as a money cow (Examples Michael Jackson's dad, Luis Miguel dad), . If Abraham didn't have Selena, him and his family would have amounted to absolutely nothing.

My opinion is that Abraham Quintanilla did whatever it took to put his daughter on the map for the sake of his family at his daughter Selenas' expense. What expense you may ask? Pulling his daughter from school so she could go on tour. Not all good money is good money and fame fades sooner rather than later. So you may think that he did great for his family but I am in complete disagreement. What are you going to do about it?
Breaks my heart to remember...in his book Chris said that after her passing he had her clothing that she wore that last day he kept it and put it away in a bag which he would occasionally open up to breath in her scent and close it back up really quick so her scent won’t go away.
I do that with my mom’s clothing. I get him 🥺

You are also forgetting Shakira who they tapped to replace Selena as a cross over star after her death. Hell even Christina AGUILERA, one of the two biggest stars of this era was also Hispanic, though that was obvious from her name. So you are mistaken, she would have been the first of the new generations Latina superstars.

Not going to lie, I teared up at this interview. Chris is so real, down to earth, humble, basically everything one can expect for a life partner. Even though Selena's life got cut short, I'm really glad that she got to experience love, and have a relationship/marriage with Chris. It's truly heartwarming and incredible to see that everything Selena wanted, dreamed, and worked for, Chris was right there with her every step of the way with his love, consideration, and support. He never held her back or limited her goals in what she wanted in life. My best wishes go out to Chris, and I hope he continues to get massive success with his endeavors. I'll always support Selena and Chris, the relationship they have, and their timeless story for ages to come.

I know this was over a year ago, but this man definitely deserves the world. The love he has for her is incredible, still to this day you see it in his eyes. He'll see her again, guarantee she'll be the one guiding him into the light.

After watching the series and movie, it makes me so sad to see him here without Selena by his side. It’s hard not to tear up listening to him because you can tell he’s missing Selena and he would do anything to spend time with her again. Chris & Selena will be reunited one day.

The series didn't even do the relationship Justice like they should have added Chris's point-of-view on the scenes but then again they treated him badly they took the car that Selena and Chris drove when they eloped and put it in a museum, they even took the cat like come on now

If we truly and genuinely love Selena, then we should give Chris the same amount and kind of love. And thank God for the interviewer. Finally someone who knows how to interview and bring out the best in Chris.
Suzette had a huge part of the Netflix series. Its obvious that everyone was jealous of Selena and THEY could have their happiness but were very stingy with Selena's. They didn't want her to do her own projects, store, etc because it would take away from the band. The siblings could have relationships but they didn't want her to. Its really disgusting, especially the way they treat or totally ignore Chris now.
Not taking anyone's side but it seems from the Netflix special...whatever decisions Selena made reflected on the band and everyone's livelihood unfortunately. I don't think they were jealous. Sad to say she was the brand she was the meal ticket basically at the time she and Chris were dating. So if she made bad choices it would affect and cost the family...it's selfish but it's fact as well. I understand where they were coming from however they needed to put themselves in her shoes. She deserved to live her life as well. Their dependency upon Selena and her career had to be very difficult on her. The pressure had to have been great. I understand the family dynamic of closeness, I really do but it appears her family created a form of co-dependency upon her to where she felt guilty for wanting to follow her own dreams and the guilt of feeling free to live her life. Almost like a form of bondage to her family. I don't think they meant to do it that way but on the outside looking in that is kind what I saw to a degree. Maybe Selena should have been a little bit more selfish of her own at times regarding her life. Sadly and ironically, once she started to step completely in her independence she loses her life...
Let alone Yolanda had some creepy witchcraft in her room to chant to get with Selena.. No offense to witches out there. But that's creepy af.
that was the mentality back then. Even today with a lot of older people they want you to stick to one thing and one thing only because anything else will cause distractions. Our generation doesn't want to put all our eggs in one basket-- she was ahead of her time.

My dad reminds me of Selena’s dad. He’s always been and always be overprotective. Even if I’d be gone. And I can’t blame him being careful with his daughter and her image before, during, and after. Chris, you are Selena's guardian angel on Earth. You never betrayed her, you never profited on her death and fame. What a decent, honorable and complete man you are. I deeply respect you.
Only Chris can tell his story with Selena and no one else. People know her story about with her family, but not their story. Her father won't let him tell their story because he can't make money off it. Abraham really took advantage of Chris at a time when he was deep in grief and not thinking straight, by immediately getting in touch of a lawyer and taking control of her estate, before Chris knew what he was signing away. He was the one who would of had control of her estate and would have protected her image from exploitation, even her own family who have made millions of $$$ off her estate. The fit each other so perfectly. She was so innocent that she trusted everyone, while Chris' personality is very reserved and balanced her out. Her father wasn't a success in the music business on his own and exploited his children, especially Selena's natural talent to gain fame and fortune for himself. Once she was gone, he's exploited her memory for fame and fortune for himself
The sadness in his eyes, that he's carried for almost 30 years, can't be ignored. His wife was ripped away, and it seems his passion to perform/record music is gone. Selena's legacy hangs over him like a cloud. I don't think his heart will truly smile again until she welcomes him on the other side.

Selena would be so disappointed to know Chris has been silenced for so long. I doubt he would ever speak ill of her family (he doesn’t strike me as that kind of person), but he has a right to tell his story of their love for one another.

I would LOVE to see a movie based on Chris' version of events. His is the only version that I'd actually believe after hearing/seeing all the other versions that he said didn't happen the way it was presented. He would be the only one who actually knew WHO Selena was as a person and not as a daughter or sister.
Selena's parents were Jehovah's Witnesses. That means they are not allowed to receive blood. Selena needed blood and her parents wouldn't allow it.
Chris wanted to make a movie but after Selena died he signed his rights over to her family and they stopped him from making one. They caught him while he was grieving. Did you read his book “To Selena with Love” he told about how he joined their band and how he got into a relationship with her and their life until she was killed.

As a man listening to Chris, this is the strongest type of individual you’ll find amongst men. To have true love stripped away from your life and leave you with nothing. A complete dead end. But for Chris to live on and build himself up again, is a very difficult thing to do. Takes so much courage and strength to go on and turn something as tragic as this experience into a bright and beautiful thing for fans and people to learn from.

Never had any bad vibes about you but I think it is rare to listen to someone in an interview like this and walk away feeling great about life. Your testimony of overcoming deep pain and heartbreak is inspiring !! Again, thank you Chris for being awesome !! I am so fortunate, I came across this interview. To see this intimate side of who Selena husband truly was! He is everything she said he was! You can See her spirit all over him... Rarely? He’s NEVER gotten this much air time before. I’m so happy for him that they did this cause they only let Selena’s family talk.
Chris has expressed his frustrations with the media everytime he’s contacted for an interview. He said they film like 2 hour interviews and in the end they only use a few seconds of his interview. And it’s always just the sad parts. They edit him in a way where they slow down the footage and put sad music over him talking like he’s still a lonely grieving widower when that’s far from the truth as of today.

Yeah, you see Yolanda really hurt and shattered more than Selena and her family. Part two of the series did a good job of showing what am impact her death had. Especially with the little boy just slumping over in his bed, depressed that his hero died for no good reason at all

Gosh once the Selena conversation comes up and he begins to go into more detail of their relationship he gets all choked up 😢 you can clearly see him reliving the memories of the two of them together and I bet he is remembering it so vividly in his mind at that moment 🥺❤ and the way he expresses his love towards her was so real I bet he believes it even more now how real it was years ago since he probably has never experienced a love like that again 💔
I love interviews where people can just talk and tell their story, feels like you’re in a small convo with them.

His beautiful wife whom I know he wasn't with her for the money but he lost all of that as well when she died. Cause her Dad owned most everything the house they lived in next door I believe he did all of that on purpose because they had eloped and no prenup was signed. Best interview I’ve seen with Chris. The interviewer was awesome! He was very good at asking the right questions and then letting him talk and not interrupting. You don’t see that very often. Good job to both of them. God bless you Chris! What a huge loss it is for the world and for Chris and the family. When she died the music came to a complete stop. I’m glad we have the videos and the songs that these talented musicians made. I haven’t heard anything like it since. 😢

So there's no reason for this man to not move on and find happiness on his life. He shouldn't be condemned to sadness forever just because he was Selena's husband and Selena wouldn't want that either. He still looks madly in love of her, true love doesn't fade away even though he learned how to live with the pain and with her memory. Hopefully they will be reunited if there's something more than this life, but for now, he deserves happiness and peace.

You can tell by the way he talks about her how hard it is for him to hold the tears back.. he is so respectful of her family no matter what they have done to him.. he loved and respected her much and deeply and now she has been taken away from him from someone that was supposed to be her friend and employee of hers.. I won’t say the name of the place out of respect, but he’s such a humble man in real life. I would always try to be respectful and treat him normal, but yah! I think one of the better things about Chris is that as upset as he was, he went on with his life. He got married again, had 2 kids and got divorced. I just started the interview, but Selena's family is well known to be Jehovahs Witnesses.. and, since I used to be one, I know this first hand... but JW's, as it's abbreviated, aren't supposed to be friends with Non-JW's... let alone 'be unequally yoked' in marriage.. so, there was THAT from their start. Not to say the family doesn't have other reasons, etc.. but just bringing this up. As it is a VERY real bias.

After so many years of Selena's murder, hearing her husband Chris talking with so much love and respect for her moves me a lot and I see why Selena fell in love with him. One of the best interviews I've ever seen, congratulations 👏
He hasn't aged a bit. I'm happy that he was able to continue living and made it through such an incredibly difficult time. I think maybe he's experiencing some trauma from losing Selena when experiencing his daughter moving away. Such a sweet guy. So very happy for his new life. Much mad respect for him.
This beautiful couple was meant to be together. Beautiful inside out. What happened to them was truly tragic. She was superbly multi dimensional talented. He is in his own right a very talented musician. But his heart is very pure and so was hers. I’m still sad over this 3 decades after. It hit us Texans especially hard.

I’ve met Chris at a Selena event and he is soooo down to earth. Him and my boyfriend hit it off talking about their favorite bands and I just stood there in awe. I was absolutely star struck when I met him. He gave me one of the warmest hugs 🤗 and he even signed both of my “To Selena With Love” books (English and Spanish).

The interviewer didn’t have to ask too many questions. Chris just let it flow. He had so much to say and an hour isn’t enough time for this guy. He has 26 years worth of things to say. Even in his book he didn’t say enough. Glad this man is getting some light and seems like a chill humble man
I love this interview because it's knowing Chris as the person that Selena fell in love with and we can see why. He's a great person,plain and simple. He's got a lot of love in his heart,you can tell by the way he talks and he deserved to be loved by Selena. I got a chance to see him and A.B. in concert at the Fresno Fair and they were AMAZING! Seeing Chris in action was UNBELIEVABLE! Like,I couldn't believe I was seeing him,LIVE in person instead of in the music videos I have watched with Selena singing away.
