I am also very fond of the Berlin U-Bahn and watching this film brings back fond memories of time in Berlin. My favorite underground station in the network is Wittenbergplatz in West Berlin, but there are several other highlights, like Warschauer Strasse and Bernauer Strasse. It's nice that this film is so comprehensive.
Ich hab noch einen Koffer in Berlin, this is the best vidio I seen and transported me back 1968 in my teen years in Berlin, thank you so much, Greetings from Australia
Love the Berlin U-Bahn, it has so much character but standards have really fallen over the past couple of years. So many short 4-car trains on the U7! I can only assume it’s because the trains are ageing a lot, so there’s more cars needing maintenance than usual meaning less in service. Then there’s the amount of graffiti on the trains, I came to Berlin in 2011 and I never saw it once. I assume again it’s because the trains are needed in service more there’s no time to clean them properly, in a lot of cases just the windows, like at 53:43. As more new trains enter service I hope it gets restored back to its former glory!😁
There are several reasons for the present situation. There are two networks: "Kleinprofil" with cars 2,30 metres wide (U1, U2, U3, U4) and "Großprofil" with cars 2,60 metres wide. So you cannot just buy a whole bunch of cars for your complete network. Buying new cars is a bit more complicated in Berlin. The cars seen at 1:58 are 28 to 46 years old (Großprofil Type F was build from 1974 to 1992). Almost all cars build in 1979 were decommissioned and scrapped for they were beyond repair and the remaining 4 cars will follow this year. This is a great loss of rolling stock. After the reunification of the city, suddenly the BVG (Berlins City Transportation Company providing underground, bus and tram service) had more stations, more kilometres of network and more rolling stock made in GDR from the 60s with spare parts running out. And *way* lot more passengers. In the following years the city of Berlin had budget cuts and the BVG hat a financial crisis. As a result of the special structure of the underground network with to variants of trains to purchase, the political events in the 90s and the following financial crisis, both - City of Berlin and BVG - failed to invest enough in new rolling stock in time. New trains were ordered to late and less than needed. Most trains of the "Kleinprofil" network were build from 1960 to 1994. A whopping 11 years later eventually new trains were build from 2005 to 2006 - although the prototype was build in 1999 (!). Another 9 years had to pass until the newest trains Type IK started to be delivered from 2015 til nowadays. Quite a gap, isn't it? Same on Großprofil. After 1992 the newest train on track (Type H, see 2:20) was build from 1994 till 2002. Since then no new trains were commissioned. Rolling stock for Großprofil decreased so dramatically, that even some older cars from the sixties were overhauled and recommissioned. Today Type IK (remember, this type is made for Kleinprofil) are applied on Großprofil because there are not enough cars for the Großprofil network. In order to close the gap between the slimmer cars and the platform attachements are used (good to be seen 15:40 to 26:20). There is a long way to go for Berlin until the underground network will have enough modern trains to work properly.
Meanwhile graffiti in my country would spark a full-blown criminal investigation as it'd then be suspected that the artists were able to breach the train depot's security, and thus be able to tamper other parts of a train too e.g. brakes
In Europe most sprayers will be having gloves and masks on so you can‘t track their face or fingerprints, and they will spray the train during normal operations by jumping infront of the train or standing in the doors, while their friends use that time to completely spray the train. The driver can‘t close the doors that way, and he also can’t just drive over the sprayers because he would kill him. There are plenty of videos on TH-cam of these idiots who call themselves artists doing this. And tbh, the police in big cities has better things to do then to hunt down graffiti sprayers.
I’ve been watching these because I miss Berlin so much. Also I’ve been using a lot of public transport in the US, specifically my home state thanks to learning Berlin’s! I was able to apply the knowledge and use it here. It also helps that our trains and our fare machines were also made in Germany. Haha. We even validate tickets the same as germany. And I love that!
28:32 I will never understand why poeple are running for the underground in Berlin. Even on evenings the interval between trains is just 10 Minutes, during the day 3 to 7 Minutes.
People run for the trains because many times it is necessary to make connections and it can take an hour to get home anyway. It you miss a connection, you may miss another train that will get you to a bus, which doesn't run as often.
@@PH-qp1dz Which is never the case inside Berlin city borders. Maximum loss of time is 20 minutes if you just miss a S-Bahn, a bus or a tram in the suburbs. Well of course, there are regional or overland connections which are once an hour or worse. But if you have to run för that specific underground train in order not to miss your overland connection, you just have a poor time management.
@@PH-qp1dz Still, if you live in a more rural area, you totally have a reason to. The most you could wait on a bus in Berlin (depending on the time of day) is 30-60min. In my town, I have to wait up to 2hrs for the next one, and another hour for the train if I miss it. When I'm in a city (which is part of my commute), I barely run for the bus, since the next one would be in 10-15min, and I can walk too.
@@Balikon Inside the Berlin city borders it is easy to use up an hour to go somewhere, e.g. from Rathaus Zehlendorf to S + U Lichtenberg it takes 1:02 minutes. That doesn't include where you need to walk to. I lived in one area and was often in the other area. Perhaps you are talking about being within the ring, but that is not the border of the city. But then maybe I am just too much of a Berliner and wanting to be everywhere as fast as possible.
Thanks for that great film that is very well done! Now that it is not possible or at least not advisable to ride the U-Bahn as often as I would like this is one of the best substitudes for the live ride. I still do look forward to the real rides, hopefully again soon!

Like the RER in Paris, amazing how fast the trains here accelerate up to speed and decelerate to a stop. Then I think of our comparatively pathetic putt-putt diesel commuter trains here in Chicago, IL USA metro area, and have to shake my head in so much regret.
ATTENTION in the subway definitely your wallet Do not put in your right pocket because without you know you have lost it in your front pockets so you feel it

Unfortunately, the stations are not protected from homeless people who sleep on the benches and piss all over the place and make so many scandals on trains. On top of that, they never pay for tickets and never get fined for it. I wish BVG would install doors to the stations where only people who have tickets can enter. Homeless people and drug addicts are a nightmare on the u-bahn lines.

Empathy lacking and hating people are a nightmare on TH-cam.
Well unlike NYC or other major cities not being empathetic and installing anti homeless stuff the BVG allows it so some people at least have some kind of shelter and an option to travel and have at least some kind of "normal life". Their slogan is "because we love you" and in Berlin are less entitled Karens throwing tantrums, because is "not a beautiful sight"
Nice Video! I live in Berlin (east) and I am blessed with public transport within 5-8 min walking. 3 U-Bahn Lines (U1, U3, U5), 3 Tram Lines (21, M10, M13) + The S-Bahn Ring and Stadtbahn. The U-Bahn network is the most diverse, almost every Station is diffrent. Still my favourite is the Tram btw, you should think about to blurr out the faces of the people cause it is not legal in Germany to film random people, even in public space. Every Citizen has the right not be filmed or photographed (Persönlichkeitsschutzrecht). It is only allowed for safty reasons. It would be respectfull for the people who didn't asked to be on an youtube video forever But I dont belive you will get in some legal trouble because of this
Not exactly right. You can film, because it's in public and he's not filming specific people. They're just standing around and not what he's filming primarly. Uploading is another thing tho, this might Cause problems if someone doesn't wanna be seen I think If you're filming public events like protests or parades it's fine

How cool video
Do some people speak English In Berlin cause I would like to go to berlin
Yes almost everyone speaks English as a second language in Berlin
Very great video I like subway and S-Bahn❤️❤️
The video is bombarded by ads 😳
is no coronavirus
Like the RER in Paris, amazing how fast the trains here accelerate up to speed and decelerate to a stop. Then I think of our comparatively pathetic putt-putt diesel commuter trains here in Chicago, IL USA metro area, and have to shake my head in so much regret.
The vending machines: 👁👄👁
i love berlin end uban and ezban
exciting movie!
Gutes Video! 👍👍👍
ATTENTION
in the subway definitely your wallet Do not put in your right pocket because without you know you have lost it in your front pockets so you feel it

Berlin und S-Bahn von Frankfurt
OMG! BERlin underground trains both inside and outside as well as the train stations have rarely changed since three decades ago. i thought they would have a flying train by this time when the backwater china and thailand have catched up with their 3 decade old technologies. what a shame to this once the Giant during the World Wars! say good bye to deutsches machinenbau!
BVG will be ordering 1500 new wagons worth 3 billion until 2030. Some of them are already in use as you can see in this video. I hope that they'll invest more into the stations as well tho
Hi
matata gang ( du kannst gehn ? )
6 Jahre bin ich gefahren. Ist langweilig. Besonders wenn ich frühdienst hatte,
Unfortunately, the stations are not protected from homeless people who sleep on the benches and piss all over the place and make so many scandals on trains. On top of that, they never pay for tickets and never get fined for it. I wish BVG would install doors to the stations where only people who have tickets can enter. Homeless people and drug addicts are a nightmare on the u-bahn lines.
And you are a piece of shit
Unfortunately, TH-cam is not protected from empathy lacking people who sleep in the comment sections and piss all over the place and make so many scandals in the comments. On top of that, they never pay for premium and never get fined for it. I wish TH-cam would install doors to the comment sections where only people who have empathy can enter. Empathy lacking and hating people are a nightmare on TH-cam.
BVG Allows it on pourpose you little piece of shit

Still my favourite is the Tram
btw, you should think about to blurr out the faces of the people cause it is not legal in Germany to film random people, even in public space. Every Citizen has the right not be filmed or photographed (Persönlichkeitsschutzrecht). It is only allowed for safty reasons. It would be respectfull for the people who didn't asked to be on an youtube video forever
But I dont belive you will get in some legal trouble because of this
Not exactly right. You can film, because it's in public and he's not filming specific people. They're just standing around and not what he's filming primarly. Uploading is another thing tho, this might Cause problems if someone doesn't wanna be seen I think
If you're filming public events like protests or parades it's fine
