TOP 10 CARS OF 1983 - WHICH CAR SUCKED?

  • In 1983. The auto industry was all over the RENAULT ALLIANCE. They thought the combination of Renault and AMC was going to be the best thing since slice bread. Boy were they wrong.
Consumers were told to be enthusiastic about the car, and that the Alliance represented a blending of compact dimensions, surprising creature comforts, excellent fuel economy, good looks, and very pleasing over-the-road behavior that ought to have the various Japanese importers talking to themselves. Actually, the Japanese were laughing.
The base version of the Alliance came in at less than $6000 for 1983, and the leather-upholstered, stereo-equipped luxo model could be had for less than $9000. The car featured a host of ingenious touches- the pedestal seats, with their rocking-chair adjustments, and the combination of trailing arms and concentric torsion bars in the rear suspension were just a few.
Car and Driver magazine stated that if it were their choice to decide, they would make it the car of the year. Just for the record, the magazine admits they made a big mistake by listing the Allinance on their list in 1983. The Alliance has the arguable distinction of being the car that saved AMC, while at the same time the car possibly hastened the automaker's disappearance as an independent company. Production ended in 1987.
AT NUMBER 9 IS THE 1983 Pontiac 6000STE
If the downsized General Motors big cars of 1977 were the best American cars since the end of World War II, the 1983 General Motors A-bodies were the best since 1977, and the Pontiac 6000STE continued the tradition.
Exactly opposite the 1983 Firebird, the 6000STE was light and lively, featured the most up-to- date technology available from GM at the time, and came wrapped in sheetmetal that could only be described as controversial.
At number 8 1983 Toyota Celica Supra
Evolving from the first-generation model to the second-gen version was no easy task but for Toyota, the company recognized that keeping it relatively similar would just curtail the momentum the Supra had, So it did away with the open headlights from the first incarnation and opted for pop-up headlights. N

Coming in at number 7 was the 1983 Porsche 944
The Porsche 944 was the best news from Germany since the Porsche 911 in 1983.
The 928 was one of the all-time great GT machines, but its very high price kept it out of the hands of traditional Porsche buyers, and traditional Porsche buyers weren’t too sure about its styling or its front-mounted V-8 engine at the time.

I don't think any of the cars *"sucked".* I think the problem with cars like the Renault Alliance is that Renault never provided a good service network. Every car needs to be maintained if you want to continue driving it. What good is driving a car if you're not going to do what you can to keep it running?

I had that 83 Renault Alliance in the early 90's as a used car just after college. It was hands down the biggest piece of crap car I have ever owned and I've owned a lot of vehicles. It was about 9 years old with less than 70k on the odo. I owned it for about 5 months and in that time it blew the head gasket, the catalytic converter went, as did the CV boots/joints. It was also very prone to electrical issues and had the alternator replaced twice. It was a horrible car.

Friend of my brother had the Renault and I took it for a drive. Stick worked fine and I thought it was okay. Maybe long term sucked but it seemed okay really. I worked at a Honda dealer in '82 and any Honda was awesome all three models; Civic, Accord and Prelude. Back then 8 out of 10 Hondas sold at this Toronto dealer, Parkway Honda, were manuals! Now? Maybe one out of fifty?

I had a 1981 Honda Accord hatchback. It had a peppy engine mated to a 5-speed manual tranny that got great gas mileage. It was a very reliable small car. I would have kept it longer but it was totaled when a drunk guy in a Corvette decided to take it and four other cars out that were parked along a street. The car from the list I'd love to have now is the Fox Body Mustang GT. It still looks awesome even if the engine was lacking the horsepower we now expect out of our 5.0 engines.

My mom gave me her 1998 Honda Accord about 5 years ago. Sat for about 2 years because I had to replace the transmission then it sat for another year because I enjoyed driving my new 2019 Chevy Duramax Z-71 and my 93 Vette. With gas going up, I've parked the truck and vette and have been driving the Honda to work and back. Yes it is the ugly faded green but I love driving that car daily for the last 8 months now. The Isuzu Impulse was introduced in the USA in 1983. I bought it in 1985. I loved that car. I drove it to the moon, then to a junkyard when it blew the head gasket. From a practical standpoint, I should have traded up before wearing it out, but I identified with it.

I had 3 RX-7s from 1979-1992. Then when the sports car was redesigned again and far more expensive, I switched to the Mazda Miata. Big disappointment, though I drove it for nearly a decade. I owned a total of six 1st-gen series 2 and 3 RX7s, all with the GSL package and some of them simultaneously. Recirculating-ball-type steering boxes notwithstanding (thanks to Mazda's bean-counters), these were most excellent-handling cars, reasonably quick for the era and had that most intoxicatingly-high-revving 12A rotary engine. Fuel economy, while not great, was no worse than that of its closest competitors from Nissan and Toyota. With proper care and feeding these engines would last as long as most other engines of the day. Unfortunately, many were owned by college coeds, hairdressers, accountants and yuppies - the vast majority of whom did not know that oil changes every 3000 miles - and oil top-ups every 1000 miles - were a thing with the rotary. They paid dearly in out-of-warranty engine replacement costs.

spent '89-'05 in the new and used car business. I don't remember ever driving a Renault alliance. I remember the car being one to avoid. the accord was a well made little thing but wasn't even in the same galaxy as a Benz.

When the RX7 first came out, I went right down to by one. Unfortunately the dealership had a long waiting list, so I waited.
Finally I got a call saying my number came up. Back down to the dealership I went. Such a beautiful car, that is until I
looked inside. What's with the black and white, checker board upholstery? They said it was the only upholstery choice. I was
not going to fork out that much money, on my first new car, and get seats that looked like a board game. Later, I was so glad
that I did not buy the RX7, once the major engine problems became known and the cost to repair was astronomical.

I test drove a 1980 while I was in high school. Trying to figure out why they would let a 17 year old and his girlfriend test drive the car. It could have been used and we were in our 20's. I can't remember. lol.... None-the-less, it was an awesome car. We couldn't afford one but loved the way they look! Thanks for watching! Subscribe!

My dad owned a 1983 Mustang until 1994, and put over 300,000 miles on it during that time, as he crisscrossed the Northeastern U.S. as a field service engineer for plastics molding machines.

Porshhh OR Por-shuh can both be acceptable, depending on local German dialects.
THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of European family surnames have different pronunciations - oftentimes within the very same family.
    STOP BEING A PRONUNCIATION NAZI!!
