Nervous flyer? How to take control of your travel anxiety with this trick | Mel Robbins

  • Do you have a fear of flying? I used to be terrified - even when I was flying over 120 times a year! But then I discovered this trick...
    BEFORE you leave, ask yourself “what’s one thing you’re excited to do on your trip?”
    THEN envision yourself doing it. See it in detail (imagine eating the food, seeing the skyline, hugging a loved one...) AND say these words: "I’m so excited to..." (it’s important to say these words out loud!)
    Here’s why it works: There’s no difference between the bodily sensations of feeling nervous or feeling excited - the difference is all in your head (I know, SCIENCE, right?). YOU CAN CHANGE nervous energy into excitement! Harvard researchers call it “reframing performance anxiety”.
    I gotta tell you, you might have to use this trick 72 times before you actually land but that’s okay! Let me know if you try it and how it works for you!

    Due to anxiety I was too scared to even go on a 30 minute train journey on my own. With advice from people like Mel I have completed a trip from England to New Zealand!! 12,000 miles ON MY OWN. Thats a 13 hour flight and an 11 hour flight each way, plus a stop over in Singapore. I was terrified of flying and now I actually enjoy it! I’d never have believed I could do it. You can beat these fears lovely people :) x

    I know this is 2 years old but I looked up travel anxiety, and found this video. I am going on a somewhat impromptu trip to Maui, and I've been a wreck ever since I got the plane tickets. I envisioned myself snorkeling in tropical blue waters and said to myself "I am so excited", and I felt instantaneously better!

    I love ❤️ flying and when I get on a plane I’m thinking how amazing it is that this massive machine takes off, how powerful the engines are and I think of the genius minds that created and developed it. Then I get excited for my destination.

    My husband and I flew to Florida in 2019. We had to take a smaller plane to NY to catch our actual flight to FL. That flight was so bumpy and the whole flight the captain kept calling thr 1 stewardess and she wasn't allowed to get up. Once we landed I told my husband I cannot get back on a plane. He was beside himself. Some beautiful ladies saw me and convinced me to get on the bigger plane. That it would be fine. I did. Then we got stuck on the mat for over an hour. We landed safely in FL however when we had to leave 3 days later I refused to fly. I had SO MUCH ANXIETY. We drive 36 hours home. He is a Saint. However I really really really want to be ok with flying as we want to see the world.
    Mel this helps but the fear is SO REAL for me!

    I feel this way but being in a car.... I get very anxious in cars.

      Me too, ever since my car accident I’ve been anxious but sometimes listening to calming music and telling yourself you’re stronger than this HELPS TREMENDOUSLY! Hope you will feel better about it soon❤️

    This is a similar trick therapists use with EMDR. It’s all about reframing your mental process to convince your brain of something else. This is super cool.

    Thanks Mel this is perfect for me. I have travel anxiety full stop so every plane is going to crash, every ship is going to sink and even travelling by car conjures up visions of motorway pile ups. I do travel, but I have done it with gritted teeth for as long as I can remember and trips are often spoiled by the anxiety. I'm going to try this method next time I have to travel, thank you xx

      A long time ago I had an insecure husband and every time I wanted to take the car and go do something without him he would tell me a car crash or car breakdown story “that he had heard”, what if I break down on a country road, what if some weirdo offered to help. It’s controlling behaviour. Now I understand that if I gave myself these fatalistic stories I am controlling my own freedom to enjoy what I want.

    Ya i admit to myself i have so much fear if i have to travel with the plane not just if i in the plane but stuation i been can made my fear too... Sometimes my fear made myself not confortable.. But i will try this method when i in the plane again. I hope this thing can work to myself.. Thx for that advice mel... 💖💖💖💖

    I love travel but the anxiety of over packing and I have to go through stuff to get to the wanted weight..if I could fly wthout the check in then I’d probably be fine

    Mel, I love ALL your videos! I actually used this technic without any scientific knowledge of how it worked but I failed to apply it to other fears. I have numerous metal implants and going to an airport with my metal card always created an imagination of being tackled by security and jailed! I needed to see myself boarding the plane, so thank you.

    I think, some EXERCISE 2 EXORCISE can help.
    In previous times, people had to work hard, just to travel around.
    The effort in travel must have relaxed people, on the way to their destination.
