Thank you for a great tutorial. I bought a similar remote and installed it in my Tiger Claw 1500 inverter. Now I don't have to run outside and open my battery compartment every time I wand to brew a cup of coffee. If I hadn't seen your video I never would have thought of it.
thanks for this straightforward video on adding a remote to a switch. I used it to guide me on adding a wireless switch to start the generator in my RV. Gets cold some nights or neither of us wanna get up but need to run generator for a bit. Found a device on Ebay and viola all connected to the momentary generator start switch in dashboard. Worked much easier than i hoped. thanks again for sharing how straightforward this is.... oh, and VHB tape has become my goto tool to secure whatever on RV.
Great video. I've been trying to figure out how to make coffee at my northern MN cabin without going outside in the cold. This was the perfect solution and works great! Thank you for a great video
Great video!....Your method of initiating it was both unique(referring to the turning on/off of the light switch, mowing the lawn....), informative and humorous..... I thoroughly enjoyed this watching this project!....
I know this is an old post, but, watched it a couple of weeks ago and was impressed ... so. I ordered the same set you had (only it was $29 shipped ;() and just finished installing it ... FANTASTIC!!!! Thanks much for the tutorial and keep up the great work. Jim
How interesting! I've been watching the videos from knurlgnar24, xboxer1985, and fliping720. Here all you are in the same place!! After spending years rebuilding dc motor controls, I'm about to try my hand at repairing some inverters. I'm going to Burningman with 1.6kw-2kw of panels and need an inverter. Just the mounting of the panels to my trailer deserves it's own video! So tonight I won a bid on Ebay for 3 inverters from the same seller. Two modified sine Go Power and one Xantrax Prosine 3k. All need repair. Also a local seller is rounding up a couple of grid tie units to donate. Thank you Knurlgnar24 and xboxer1985 for your repair videos! They are so helpful! I was stoked to see fliping720's video of running grid ties with non grid tie inverters on the same 120vac line. I might be trying the same thing before I decide to take any or all of these potentially repaired inverters into the desert for 2 weeks to run my blender for a daily margarita!! I'm making sure to video my repair exploits. I have a good digital video camera, but I'll try my S5 for the first few videos, and post them to get you gents critiques! What software do you guys use for editing and posting video? Thanks! -Mike
I could use some advice on video editing software myself. I am somewhat ashamed to admit that I just use virtualdub. Every time I try to use something else I end up pissed off that it cannot do the simplest things that vdub can do with little to no effort.
I want my inverter to turn on automatically at night. Could I use a 12v photocell in a similar manner? Would the full load of battery power be transferred through the photocell?
Not a good idea to block airflow of the system which is typically optimized for system performance. I would choose 2 other option in this particular situation which probably will suit all inverters - 1) Mount box outside the inverter with screws and only wires go inside the inverter 2) If you are too adamant to package everything inside the inverter, I would remove switching box outer shell and package only circuit board inside the inverter (Typically outer shell is much bigger than inside unit) My 2 cents!
I purchased one of those remote switches. It is going to be installed in my RV. I disengage the solar batteries each time I leave. Will the receiver retain the settings if power is removed?
Hello again, I think I might have posted a comment on a wrong video of yours. I tried connecting a external switch to my inverter. And I think I might have blown something. Because there was smoke coming out near a capacitor. The switch on the inverter head one of the leads with three wires and on the other one it was one single wire. I noticed there was a white and a black along with a red going to a voltage meter. So I assumed that the black wire was going to be the negative and the read one of the Reds was going to be the positive so I connected the switch as such and when I powered the inverter I heard something kind of pop and a little smoke came out so I'm not sure what night of blown. Their are no visible burn marks anywhere near where the smoke was coming out of. I would really appreciate your input. and could also provide pictures if you need me to. Thank you
The questions I have are 1. Is the switch in the inverter a dc or ac switch (I assume is dc)? What is the current through the switch? If it is in fact dc surely 1500 watts is not flowing through it. (1500 w / 12v would equal an OMG 125 amps, so i assume the inverter has a relay that switched the dc voltage on and off somewhere internally ?
Great idea. How would you go about this being 8000 miles away from the inverter? Im looking for a timer switch I guess for 12v that resets the inverter everyday?
Great video which lead to this thought. If the inverter has no room inside, could you attach the remote box switching relay onto the live 12v feed into the inverter. So the inverter is controlled by it's imput power rather than the switch on the inverter? Naturally a seperate permanent 12v feed would need to go to the remote box. (Was thinking of a low wattage inverter only (150w max).Actual peak load will be about 60watts 240v.
I upgraded my inverter and want to use my old remote switch from it but it is wired. Can i just use the 2 wires and solder them to the new switch? Will it work. Mine is wired?
If I remember correctly it was an eBay purchase and the model I bought likely isn't available anymore. Look for a 'dry contact' remote relay and you'll find multiple options. They're dirt cheap today on eBay and Amazon and are very flexible with many uses.
Hello knurlgnar24, My inverter is a 3000 watt Aims Power inverter with a 24 volt input, what would you recommend for a wireless remote control please, thanks and great video.
Hey, love your videos... :) I have the Aims 3000 watt pure sine inverter. The problem is, it only shuts down if I'm not home or around at 22volts, but by then your bats are pretty much gone! I want to get a relay that will shut it down around 24.6 volts, do you have any idea how I can do this? Thanks
Did you figure this problem out ? I also have an aims 3000 watt inverter I’m looking into doing the same thing on my camper with a victron battery monitor that has a built in relay that’s programmable for voltage Parameter’s to turn on and off
Look for a 'dry contact' relay and it should work. Most of the time those switches are low voltage, but if you aren't sure just get one that is rated for 24V and you'll be safe for certain.
Hey Knurignar! Well thanks for the help. I purchased a deep cell and the inverter seems to be working now. Yea!!!! Now..could you help with one more thing? Will this remote work? 12V 15 AMP Remote Relay Kit Control DC Connector RM02 15A Logisys 12 VOLT. The one you suggested is $27 on ebay but comes with 2 receivers and I only need one. Or do you have any other suggestion? Thanks again. t
I'm glad it works for you with the new battery. Without knowing exactly how the power switch is configured I cannot say if that kit will work or damage the inverter, but I would recommend a 'Dry Contact' type. This will work with any inverter and is more versatile. Dry contact means that no power is applied to the relay outputs, it is simply a remote operated switch that opens and closes just like the switch on the inverter itself.
I think I would prefer to add a connector on the front of the inverter so that the remote could be attached to the outside or near the inverter wherever it is installed.
Nice video i had the same idea, exept i went for switching the + to the inverter. Only reason being, i did not want to open up the inverter. My inverter is in the garden shed, with a lead to our living room for tv lighting etc. Its no problem going out side to turn it off, exept when its dark. The moment we go outside the security light comes on, then next doors one as well. So prevent disturbing peoples sleep, i did the mod My video is of the initial firing up. And testing the remote in the house .
Can you help? I have a 1500 tiger claw hocked up to my car battery with 2g wiring about 4ft long. There is an inline fuse. I am running a Brother HL5370 laser and when I have the car running and turn on the laser printer, about 1 minute later the inverter alarm is going off. I don't believe the printer draws more than a 600 watt load at peak. Any suggestions?
I suspect you have a weak battery. Cars will start and run on batteries that are in remarkably poor condition. Inverters will not. What does it do when the car is not running? What year/model vehicle is it? What kind of battery do you have and how old is it? What is the temperature where you live?
That has been my suspicion for a bit. The battery is probably five years old. Its a die hard. Its still starting the car so I assumed it's probably still good. I'm in Pennsylvania and the temperatures here have been down to 10 degrees lately and the battery still starts the car that's why I thought that it's probably still okay. 2001 Chrysler Voyager 4 cylinder. I use this vehicle only for work and wanted to set up the printer for when I'm on the road. I appreciate your help.
T. Joyce 10 degrees? Heat wave!!! (It was -20F here last night) Your van has a decent alternator which is good and it uses a group 34 battery which is great, because it gives you the option of a deep cycle battery for your application as it will work better for long term loads. And yes, it will still start your car just fine despite the lower CCA rating. Group 24 is the same size L and W but 1 inch taller and is a very common deep cycle size. If it fits under your hood I would highly recommend that approach. I have used the Autocraft 24DC-1 battery and it seems good. Be sure to use their online coupon codes if you go that route to save a quick $20 or $30. With a single battery expect to need the van running for heavy loads since a single battery is iffy for a heavy load like your printer.
Okay. Thanks For your help. I will go with the deep cell as it won't hurt and I do always have the car running so I don't get stuck somewhere. Hopefully this will take care of it. 22 degrees below zero?? Where the heck are you.... Alaska :-)
T. Joyce Actually, if I was in Anchorage it would be more than 20 degrees warmer. :) It has been a cold winter here this year in the north central USA. I hope you get your setup running smoothly. With a good battery and the adequate cabling you already have I don't see why it wouldn't work out.
at least I can understand your video. before I purchase RP 201 I WANT TO ASK IF IT WILL WORK FOR ME I WANT TO TURN A STARTER MOTOR OFF AND ON DOES THE AMPS OF THE MOTOR MAKE A DIFFERENCE WOULD I NEED A DIFFERENT ONE. I LOOKED ON EBAY AND THE RP 201 IS SELLING FOR $29.95 I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE IT WOULD WORK AND NOT BURN UP. NOT VERY GOOD AT THIS SORT OF THING.HELP PLEASE
I couldn't help for certain unless I know how the switch is different, but on every inverter I've seen the switch is a toggle switch which either connects two contacts or disconnects them. If you have one which is a momentary switch that is logic only then the job would be more difficult.
***** It's different in that it has five contacts/conductors in one wire strand that are connected to a circuit board that the switch is on. It's not the typical positive/negative contacts for a rocker switch. It's more like a toggle switch with a circuit board.
@knurlgnar24 - great video. I am attempting to do this with a CADO 2000w Inverter which even though the switch is different, I believe I can make it work. my question to you is how do you determine, other than being next to the inverter, if it is one or off when you use the remote? I am connecting inverter to a 110v plug inside the cabin of my RV and inverter outside in one of the cubby garages. I don't want to forget the inverter is on, so I want to put a light inside my RV. Any recommendations on what to use?
I used a small 2 wire LED volt meter (purchased from EBAY) and ran a line to my front room directly from the battery, when in use the voltage drops to around 23-24V and when not in use the voltage is higher at around 27-28V, so you can tell when the inverter is in use and when its not....hope that helps.
I bought a switch like the one you have in your video. I have an AIMS Power Inverter/Charger that has a Remote Port / RJ11 jack that you can use the wired remote they sell. However, I would really like something wireless. Any experience wiring one of these? Any pointers?
Hi . Some inverters come with the rj11 switch. Would you know how to use that port as an ignition lockout so the inverter turns on only when driving? This product seems to be doing that, but not sure for a specific inverter. invertersrus.com/product/magnumenergy-me-isw/ i need to install a relay?
Any dry contact relay can be connected to ignition voltage and used to control an inverter's on/off function. Some inverters have external contacts allowing this function natively, but all inverters with a switch can be modified for this by simply extending the switch wires to the dry contact relay.
