The most amazing goals from the career of NHL superstar Mario Lemieux, called with flare by legendary Pittsburgh Penguins broadcaster Mike Lange and other Hall-of-Fame hockey announcers.
Scotty Bowman, the greatest coach in NHL history in a recent podcast interview with ‘The Athletic.’ You had some great ones in Pittsburgh, no? “Well, Mario is the best player I’ve ever coached. He’s the greatest player I’ve ever seen. He was never healthy and he was way ahead of everybody else when I was in Pittsburgh. To this day, I still think what he did in the 1992 playoffs - you have to remember he played the last two series with one healthy hand - is the greatest playoff performance ever. Nobody was ever better than Mario was for us in 1992.”
Wayne is awesome, he was a coach on the ice. Teaching guys how to perform🏆 Mario can’t really teach to guys how to go between Bourque’s legs or top shelf on Hasek
He had all the skills in the world, I mean all of them : speed, hands, shots, hockey IQ... With a frame of 6'4" and 225 pounds. Never been a more dominant player than him when healthy !
@@8799crosby Gretzky trumps Mario in every aspect. All his numbers outpace Mario and were achieved with fewer games. What really sells me on Wayne over Mario is his +520 plus/minus to Marios +114.....
@mikemyros4142 yeah and Gretzky had the luxury of playing his first 9 seasons surrounded by one of the best teams in NHL history. Lemieux started with one of the worst. They weren't exactly a level playing field, well, until Gretzky got traded and Lemieux finally had a good team around him. Then who outscored who?
Back 80's, I was playing for Draveurs TR and Mario was with Voisins Laval. Mario was 6'4" and I was 5'6". Imagine that monster. So, it was not only good, he was impressive and intimidating just looking at him. I didn't make it to NHL, he became the best ever... Super Mario !
I’m 24 years old and I never really got to see Lemieux play in his prime. But watching highlights and every old game footage I can find, I can say with out a doubt that Super Mario was and is the best hockey player to ever put on a sweater and light the lamp.
He was still way more dominant than any players when he could not lace his skate himself because of his back pain for years. After he lost his speed, he could still carry the puck from zone to zone, and fool every body. When you dominate at skow speed, it shows how great you are. Like Messi now at 35, , or Zidane in his thirties.
@@dextrosebizarre He also changed his game around the time of the 90s repeat to be a better passer, no doubt with help from powerplay linemate Ron Francis.
Even at the end after the back and shoulder surgeries he was big and slow, but you couldn't get the puck off of him and if he was anywhere near the goal he could put the puck into a 4×4 inch spot. He was just so lethally skilled. Had he been given a team of goons and talent, and been void of injury....of course those things didn't happen :/
@@dovteitz3479 Gretzky had 930 more assists than Mario. At Mario's pace, assuming he could have kept it up it would've taken him another 800 games to do so, about 400 more than Gretzky's total games played. Possible ? maybe ? I wouldn't bet my house on it though.....
I loved watching him play. He came along at just the right time and the fact he played in a U.S city was also important. Hockey had a somewhat tarnished reputation in some circles after the Flyers had gooned it up in the 70's. Some viewed the sport with scorn. Suddenly the sport got respect for what a beautiful and exciting game it could be and the fighting wasn't necessary anymore to attract spectators to the games. I doubt that we'll see another player who can make a similar impact on the sport as Mario did, not in my lifetime anyway.
My dads friend is a massive Penguins fan and we talk often about hockey which is fun bc he’s helped me learn the game more. He told me about Mario Lemieux and I watched this video today and man, this stuff is just incredible. He’s gotta be the most incredible I’ve ever seen, so far.
The last goal against Nordiques with two players on his back will be forever my ultimate favorite goal. And it tells how dominant he was. The one where he fooled Bourque like a child,, one of the best D-Def ever tells a lot as well. Turn-around goal on his back hand is something too. First NHL game, first face-off, first shot, first goal against Boston and Bourque… Je h man.. I could talk about him forever.

Lemieux was 100% better than Gretzky, it's just that injuries ruined him from being the true GOAT. Now granted, he did start his own injuries by being a chain smoker and by having a poor diet in his first couple years in the league. But if both were healthy for one given year, I'm taking Lemieux hands down.

Simply the best hockey player to ever put on a pair of ice skates. You all can have #99 and his records. I'll take #66 any day of the week.
If Gretzky would have had to wrestle even half the defenders Mario did, he's not even close to the numbers he ended up with.
