I have been able to use my new Garmin panoptic‘s about three trips. Rather than spooking the salmon it seems like the downrigger‘s attract the fish and then they drop back towards the lures. I was told by others who have the same unit that is also their experience. In fact one remarked that he doesn’t always put a Lure on the probe rigger but that gets the most attention. So not sure about needing long leaders. I’ve been doing well with my deep rigger lead less than 10 feet off the ball with flasher fly set up and one of those new pro troll lighted glow flashers.
michael Collins great insight we have tested short and long leads over the course of the last 10 years and they both have there days but consistently longer leads have been better for us
Don’t you mean that when trolling into (against) current, speed at ball will actually be higher than SOG since relative velocity at the ball roughly equals current speed + SOG?
My last name is Gaghen and there are several ways it is spelled, partly because of protestant/catholic split in Ireland I I have had people spell my last name the same way you spell yours often

When you set your lines 100-150 back behind the Down rigger do you do that with Flasher flies too? Or just with spoons or Jplugs?
