I remember 'Kidbits'. I am not from Detroit, but I did pick up the NBC feed from Detroit in Canada during the 1980s and into the 1990s. The endless vocal loop used as the theme along with the older public service announcements from the 1970s and early 1980s really drew me to the show. Definitely worth waking up to on Saturday mornings before the cartoons came on.
Lot of folks scratching their heads out there reading words like "Kidbits" and "Gary Ed Mach" coming from us retro Detroit Saturday Morning Cartoon crowd.
always loved it...definitely a weekend staple. i remember in the early 90s they would replay all the old kidbits episodes about 3 or 4am; i worked nites so i was still up and able to watch 'em...good sh!t.
@@MarkNF82 Yep, originally WDIV played these five days a week at 6:55AM so kids could see these before school, but was later changed to a Saturday morning program, originally tied to Warner Bros. cartoons they played them between before becoming a half-hour series that was played for over a decade.
Somewhat dry and very informative-definitely more charisma than Ted Koppel. It was what you watched (WDIV-channel 4-the most Detroit-orinted station of the big 3 VHF stations) on Saturday mornings waiting for that huge cartoons block to kick in...that or Capt. Kangaroo or the Little Rascals.
Kidbits ran in reruns forever. I remember it being on at like 5AM sometime in the early-mid 90s. Cool show from what I remember, but the theme was better!
I’m just happy I know who the group is performing it. I know this is a cover of Ronnie Laws classic hit. Also if you’re here jamming to this song and of a certain age and this sounds super familiar, you may have possibly grown up in Detroit in the 80s and 90s, as this song was used as the intro to a kid’s science TV show called “Kidbits”. It aired usually at 7:30 am on Saturday mornings on our local NBC affiliate

Some old science show that came on in Detroit used the vocal part of the song as it's theme song. WOW now I know where it came from, thanks for posting this.

I did not know about the Side Effect version until after I got into House music. I was probably introduced to the song in 1989. Yet, I remember the Wood Brass & Steel version as a little kid and before the kidbits children show. That show I think was from 1979 to 1984.
@MrMallymal68 @1974 - This is how music inspires people to reflect in their own interpretation. There's a simple message and its spread in so many ways. I'm hooked on Ronnie when I'm mellow but need a groove to boost me though with Wood, Brass and Steel. updated vibe with Incognito and plenty others who deserve a pat on the back for keeping this jam alive.
very, very good. Way better than that newer version ive heard on the radio several times. I didnt know there was a 70s version. Of course its way better.
I used to own the album back in the day, lost it and been hunting for it ever since...Stumbled onto this performing a websearch. Where can I buy the album/cd? Anyone know?

Love the clavinet solo starting at 2:22. We should start a petition to bring this instrument back to pop music...
That was a common sound in the '70's.
Let’s not but say we did…unless you’re Billy Preston but he’s dead.
One of the greatest top 50 Jazz song's ever made !!!!
There’s such a thing as a great jazz song?
This is the first album I ever bought. Scatched up,non playin, but still in the crate!!! Glad I can get it here!!!!!!!
great taste for your first record. one of my personal favorites from '76

Where did the years go , I don't know, sad , but this a treasure group I never forgot
I just want to know who thought of the idea to make a loop of the vocal part for Kidbits. I used to get up mad early on Saturdays just to hear that.
RIP also Herbert Powell keyboards and Otis Stokes sax
I never heard this version before. Nice job. The tune itself is so awesome that a fine group of musicians will almost always do it justice.

yes he certainly did. They used a song from the "Fame" soundtrack called Hot Lunch Jam as their theme song.
