  • #nikonz70200 #nikon #nikonz7 #It’s a little late, but we can finally put it out. A telephoto is arguably a lens every photography should have in their arsenal, and here’s Nikon with their answer in the form of the 70-200 F/2.8 VR S for the Z-Mount on their mirrorless cameras.
    To cut to the chase, this is perhaps the best 70-200 you can get for the Z-Mount, period.

    Don’t bother with the ‘battery grip’ just get a Small Rig Z6/7 L bracket - get extra pinky space and quick portrait orientation on a tripod - my Z7 has it pretty much permanently attached.

    • @joshuameadows4165
      @joshuameadows4165 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got the Kirk L-Bracket. Adds the extra grip and allows me to use the FTZ adapter and mount it on my Arca-swiss compatible ball heads. Small Rig looks really neat.

      Ended up with the grip anyway... I shoot portraits, events and weddings. I need the extra battery life. One is just not enough. I can go through one battery in less than 2 hours, sometimes in an hour and a half or so - and I usually shoot for 4-5 hours. I had to get the grip and three extra batteries, totaling to 4 batteries; 2 in the grip and 2 extras (For each of my cameras.)

    Placed the order back in April and I am anxiously awaiting the notice it has shipped. Why? it opens up a whole new range of possibilities. Throw in the 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters and your ability to capture the world grows significantly. Maybe a trip to Singapore is in order, the Sentosa Zoo was awesome last time I was there. And the skyline has changed as well.

    I'm new to photography and noticed you often are not supporting the lense, and holding the camera just by the body. The lense mount is taking a bunch of shearing force from this. Is this safe? I only have lenses about 1/3 the weight of this! Thank you.

    Nice, easy to follow review. Overall good to see Nikon continuing their trend of the last several years in raising their game. Whether you trade up to the E in DSLR or switch to mirrorless you really can't go wrong on their 70-200 lenses. Between the S lens for Z system mirrorless and the E lens for F-mount DSLR, it looks like Nikon has the two best-in-class lenses in this segment, clearly better not only than earlier Nikkor products but also stuff from anyone else. Difference is I think this S lens trades a bit of the E's bokeh for the really exceptional sharpness and the closer focusing. But the E is already astonishingly sharp. Makes for a slightly harder-edged "look" for the S.

    Great video, you are truly smooth to listen to and straight to the point.. Great job on those videos. However, with all do respect, and in my humble opinion, Absolutely this lens is no where near the GM 70-200 f2.8 from Sony. With editing and bit of effects yes, you can get pics to be as sharp as the Sony. But out of the gate, i would say Sony still ahead by an obvious Mile or so.. It could be because of the superiority of the Sony Camera , especially that I use the a7RiV ... Yes, it is one hell of a lens that Nikon produced, and definitely a big step forward, but when you truly put the two to the test early morning or late afternoon , with low lighting, Sony beats any out there on the market easily..

      Watch DPREVIEW's video comparing all of the 70-200s. The Sony is the softest. Canon's RF and Nikon's Z lenses are far superior to Sony's G Master lenses.

      can you expand on that point please? you say too expensive for "what it is"? its a 70-200...pretty much the standard zoom for all manufactures to have in their line up. The price is also fairly competitive for a 70-200.

    • @KungPowEnterFist
      @KungPowEnterFist 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardmurray1858 Everyone has their own take on what the f2.8 zooms are and are not. I do not subscribe to what the shills say or "conventional" wisdom that people decided define all things. I have owned them, I have shot them, I know what they are and what they are not. $2600 is pretty steep for what that lens is and, more importantly, is not. It looks pretty amazing in terms of sharpness, but that is not the only measure of a lens. If you find that price attractive, then maybe its worth it for you. The Z 24-70 f2.8 has already been on sale, $300 off. If this lens gets a similar sale at some point, I may consider it. But $2600 is just too high for what it is for me.

    • @richardmurray1858
      @richardmurray1858 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KungPowEnterFist My question was more to ask the meaning of your point "what it is to you", what is it to you? and what's your point on the price. I am well aware that sharpness is only a part of what gives a lens great characteristics. My point being, as someone who has been lucky enough to get this lens, is that it is has excellent performance in terms of sharpness, but in addition it renders fantastically and produces amazing colour rendition similar to what you find in some of Nikons best F mount primes. It's that good. So in terms of price it is pretty much the going rate (considering it is similar to offerings from Sony and Canon etc) the fact it performs so well and covers a range of 70 to 200mm means that to get the equivalent focal lengths in primes etc then you would be paying well in excess of this. If it did not perform so highly in all aspects I would accept your point. However, in this case Nikon has produced a zoom lens with characteristics similar to prime lenses. I do not mean to question your comment but you did categorically claim it is "too expensive for what it is". im not sure if you ave used the lens...I am guessing by your statement you have not bought it?

    • @KungPowEnterFist
      @KungPowEnterFist 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardmurray1858 No, I am not getting drug into one of these again. If you feel this lens (any of the Z f2.8 zoom trinity set) delivers for you and at a price you are willing to pay, then you should but it. That really is all there is to it. I for sure wont be buying the Z 14-24 f2.8, and it is doubtful I will buy Z 24-70 f2.8. The Z 70-200 f2.8 is interesting to me, but not at $2600. None of these replace a single f1.8 or faster prime, let alone a bag of them; which is what you are alluding to. That is just shill nonsense. You don't just magically make up a stop and a third of aperture because you wish it. I don't have to buy this specific lens to know this. But, again, I am not getting drug into another one of these. People can buy whatever they want, and you certainly don't need my approval to buy anything.

    • @richardmurray1858
      @richardmurray1858 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KungPowEnterFist thats fine, I don't want to 'drug' (I think you mean drag) you into any debate but you have answered my question which is great...you prefer primes...thats fine. So do I in an ideal world. Im not sure the standard trinity of zoom lens is necessarily 'shill nonsense' its just a type of lens which exists for specific purposes (basically to reduce the need to keep switching lenses) which as I work in journalism works well for me. Just a final point I would make is that if you don't want to be dragged into debates probably best you don't just make sweeping generalised comments on a TH-cam video without justifying what you are saying. This leads to debates. You could have simply stated that you prefer a bag of primes and you don't want to use any lens less than f1.8. That would have been a (possibly illogical but) valid point to make.

    Why do you use the lens with the lens hood reversed?. It might look cool, but it totally defeats the purpose of the lens hood to control unwanted light reflections coming into the lens. Why ? FYI, I am an award-winning pro shooter of over 40+ years in the business and I use my lens hoods properly as they do help the image quality by helping control flare and or ghosting in sunny back light or side light situations. Folks follow your example and you should be doing it correctly IMHO.

    Great review! The lens is indeed a gem but...as a Nikon shooter of 12 years, i can tell that Nikon is going down a path of no return. Having used their Z7 and Z6 bodies and lenses, i find their lenses abnormally large and very expensive compared to competitors. Their lenses aren't taking advantage of their large Z mount. Why would people pay so much for 1.8 prime lenses. Their mirrorless bodies are no better than their DSLR counterparts at this point of time. They have a poor lens ecosystem and lack 3rd party lens support. They are not catching up to the competition by a long shot. I'd say the only reason to invest in Z-mount is unless you have tons of cash to invest in the brand and you have ultimate faith that Nikon will prevail. I think their DSLRs and F-Mount lenses are still a better buy.

    • @jimbolic0809
      @jimbolic0809 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mirrorless bodies are the future. It'll be more expensive in the meantime, but it's newer tech and people are trying to future-proof their gear. The lens might be heavier (I'm unsure about this) but the bodies are much more compact and lighter.
