      Yes, why the gap? in theory, the points of the Z mount are: The flange distance and that it allows super-fast AF lenses(aperture). We have nothing of the second but I was expecting that they will deliver on the first. The lens is longer than the old one, and have an empty "adapter like" extension at the end. It's not only that it's empty is that it looks the part. It will be helpful if you could say what is the "something else" that you allude by. 5:20?

    Nikon making the best 24-70 f2.8 and the best 70-200 f2.8 plus several great 1.8 prime, yet people blaming Nikon for making worse glass than Canon(I guess everyone needs 1.2 primes in this world).

      it is very weird that people say Nikon only has "garbage" 1.8 lenes, and canon has crazy 1.2 lenes( around 1 kg, and nobody takes it as a big problem). However, when nikon release this mind blowing 70-200 ( At least it has incredible MTF), everyong complains about the weight and size. Indeed, Canon's 70- 200 is compact, but Nikon has better optical quality in term of the MTF. There is always a trade off. People seems to complain about nikon no matter what they do. sony's 720 and panasonic's 720 are even heavier .

      W Tattoo i dont know maybe because the Canon 70-200 is half size? Or maybe because they released faster lenses at shorter time and they are all unique and cover a wide range rather than 20 1.8 then 24 1.8 35,50,85 lmao they are all few mm apart! At least make some 1.2 god damn 😂 and 70-200 is not even out yet. Slow non accurate AF compared to the silly Eos R. No i am not a hater I have 2 Z cameras

    Since you originally posted this video, I've gotten my Z-mount 70-200 f/2.8 S, and have been blown away. Although I've never depended on photography for my income, I've shot pro-level Nikon gear, since my first F2 (and F2as) back in 1975. So, I've owned most of the variations on Nikon 70-200-ish lenses, and this one, by far, tops them all. Impressive build quality, fast and silent autofocus, handy function buttons, amazing VR, and of course most importantly, stunning image quality. This is undoubtedly the best Nikon lens I've owned, and I'm soooooo happy I took the plunge. (I've upgraded my Z6 to a Z6 II, and still have a Z7 too, and the lens of course works equally well on both cameras.) Seriously impressive! Your reviews are a huge help in making these decisions, so thank you again. :)

      I will indeed get the 50mm f1.2. I would say they are very different lenses, The 70-200 obviously offering some incredible quality across a good range of focal lengths means it can be used for a lot of different things. The 50mm f1.2 has a much smaller use case I feel it’s main goal is the ability to be used wide open at 1.2 how often do you want to shoot at 1.2 I suppose.

    Great preview Ricci. I’m interested to know how Z6 IBIS + FL ED lens with FTZ adapter compares with Z6 + Z lens in terms of slowest shutter speed. I’ve captured sharp wildlife pics with 500PF at 1/20s (handheld) on a Z6 (f5.6/ISO 10,000) but still use a D4S so hesitant to swap the FL ED to Z just yet.

    I know you mention the new Z 70-200 is optically better than the FL ED but how marginal is that difference? As a owner of a Z6 and Z7 is the difference between the two going to be evident at first glance or is the difference only seen when pixel peeping? I ask cause I’m considering the FL ED over the new model because of the great price that a used FL ED can be picked up for right now.

    Question. I have a Z7 and Z50. If I were to use the 50-250 DX lens from the Z50 on the Z7, is there improved VR like with the 70-200 full frame Z mount lens? Or is it no better than the VR in the old F mount lenses used on the Z7?

    • @RicciTalks
      @RicciTalks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Z7 will use combined VR from the lens and IBIS when using the 50-250. Still might not be as “good” as the 70-200 is. Also the 50-250 obviously forces the Z7 to crop to DX

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ricci Talks Ok. Yep I’m aware of the crop. Was just curious about the VR performance in the DX Z lenses vs the older F mount lenses. Anyway, I can say from my quickie tests the optics performance of the 50-250 on my Z7 looks just as good as it does on my Z50. It ends up being around 20 MP or so anyway. If I had to use it I could. I’d rather not though. I’m waiting on the 24-200 for my Z7.

    Hello Ricci, You're my goto for trusted Nikon info, so here's a question for you - do you know, or have theories, as to why the new prime 'S' lenses are so large? They are so much longer than the actual focal lengths would suggest. They do not have any VR mechanism to accommodate so I would think that Nikon would take advantage of the mirrorless design and new Z mount to make the primes more pancake-like don't you agree?

    The no BS Nikon review man, thanks Ricci for sharing this. As you say the moving of the zoom ring to the front makes perfect sense, shouldn't really take long too long to adapt to! PS how far we've come from the D1, still miss my D3 too.

    So Far for me
    The responsiveness; the weight compared to my VR 2; the Inate sharpness! It balances very well on my Z6. The bokeh is like 3D man the colors are sensational. Also theAF is quicker as well I don’t know the % but it is noticeably quicker than with FTZ Adapter on my VR2 A monster Winner from Nikon

      If you have ever shot the 70-200mm/2.8 S FL you will have a clue. Based on what I have read the the AF-S FL lens is comparably as sharp. The Z mount will jump off the shelves no doubt, but I cannot see trading my AF-S FL lens to buy it right now.

  • @brianking6341

    The space on the back of the lens is to accommodate teleconverters. Some lenses will not accept them, like the 105 f/1.4E and other shorter primes with the TC14E-III.

    Show us some photos to see the bokeh of this lens. I know it is sharp...but colors and bokeh...I would like it compared not with 70-200 f mount but with 80-200 f mount which has better colors and bokeh(but lacks VR)

  • @christosphillips3568
    @christosphillips3568 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nikon's mirrorless strongest feature IMO would be the larger aperture and shortest flange distance, supposedly this would allow for faster glass to be produced and provide technicians with easier methods to develop that glass. We all have seen a leap in sharpness in these lenses especially corner to corner , however one would expect Nikon to produce faster glass also , something that (apart from the Noct), we haven't quite seen yet. Let's suppose that this piece instead of f2.8 they made it at f1.4, or f1.8. That would really make the market shift towards the Z system. That would really be "re-defining mirrorless" as they put it during the Z release campaign. A holy trinity of 1.4 zooms would make the mouth of any wedding photog water and think about the Zees more seriously. In an ever shrinking market the competitors can only stay afloat through innovation. And this is the area where Nikon should up their game before its too late.
