  • Decent winter fly fishing activity on the Crooked River and Prineville Reservoir fly fishing early January 2020 in Central Oregon, near Prineville, Oregon, which is a 40 minute drive from Bend, Oregon. Temps in the upper 30's. Short lighted days, and cold temps limit fishing, but I managed to put in a little over an hour on the crooked, and an hour up on the reservoir...almost caught a beast rainbow trout.
    BONUS clip towards the end.
I tied up my first Nymph pattern on the go and had lots of bites on it. I'll cover a few flies to use when out there, and a few methods I use successfully while fishing out there.

I love fishing the crooked. I live in bend and tie flies as well. I like using size 18/20 elk hair caddis skipped below me.

It's always a great feeling to catch a fish on a fly you have tied yourself. 1 quick tip on tying tilt your fly slightly downward in your vice just enough to keep your bead against the eye of the hook. Good luck on your channel.

I found that setting the drag on your spinning set up...just a little below breaking point of your line will help keep those big ones from escaping. Not sure if you did or not. I just never heard any drag noise in the video.

Are you a Prineville resident.....We just moved here and would love to know more about where all the good fishing is. Thanks again.

Many times when I fish downstream and the fish hit the fly because of the direction it pulls it out of their mouth. I get much better hook-up rates when I cast flies upstream because when I set the hook it pulls it toward their mouth. Try it. I think you'll have the same results.

Congrats on your first fish on a fly you tied! Pretty sure Prineville Reservoir doesn’t have lake trout though.

      Thanks!
The reservoir has trout, I've cought quite a few medium sized, and I've hooked 2 in the 20" size or bigger but haven't netted one yet. Saw a guy who had 3 one day....left me scratching my head.

      Thank!
Was there 2 days ago, worked a school of like 50 whitefish, they only wanted small nymphs. I struggled to hook them. Though they bit like crazy. Fun fun. Landed one 12" whitey

@@MTsubfly My favorite is Lone Pine... but then again, the Crooked River has so many beautiful spots!
