For the life of me,I cannot figure out her chest voice. It just rumbles and quite frankly is unlike anything I've heard from anyone else. Most average singers would be dead after trying to sing like this. She just has so much power and can shift between registers flawlessly- I am just in awe.

This is the reason WHY I have always appreciated and respected Ms Baltsa as one of the greatest singing actresses of the late 20th century! She puts some dramatic sopranos to shame here and she is strictly speaking a high mezzo! Bravissima Ms Baltsa, you STILL have it!

You are so right. Mezzo or soprano? Who cares? what about 1.49 (2.44 & 3.20) and 4.14 ? ? Baltsa is a miracle. And such power. I guess the audience forgot to breath that evening!! And what a brilliant photo! She looks superb too.

Baltsa had a deep understanding for the characters she portrayed. That´s why it´s impossible to judge her by her voice only. It was absolutely necessary to see her on stage and experience her devotion to her craftmanship. And she never held back, she always gave what she had. THAT is what differs an artist from a fraud.

Yes, I am one of those fans that could see Baltsa until 2017. The voice is amazing, strong and her misicality is so conected to the rol that hardly you will not feel other singers are wick for this role. Baltsa puts her mark in all characters she played. She is history of opera for sure.

it is not secret: Baltsa herself admited in a interview she is actually a dramatic soprano but choose cleverly mezzo repertoire to have a global carreer. Her diplome from greek National Conservatory was as a soprano. dramatic soprano and mezzo soprano are like twin voices. good choice mme Baltsa! bravo also for lady Macbeth!

dramatic soprano? hahaha! yes her impetus is dramatic but not her instrument. its a liric soprano like so many others. most dramatic sopranos have a much better low register than her. thats why she streched her chest register up till it came out of her ears.

The reality is that "soprano" designation is actually a multifaceted diamond. Color, weight, clarity can vary over a given area of a SInger's gift. It would do opera so much good to return to the days where the whole package led a casting decision and nit some rigid early 20th century bureaucratic system. Hear, hear to SInger's like Verrett and Baltsa that successfully beat the system.

A very persuasive performance of a very difficult scene. I didn't think she had such a secure upper register for a mezzo-soprano. I always loved the timbre of her voice and was lucky to see her charming acting as Isabella in Rossini's 'L'Italiana in Algeri." Of course, she always had the flexibility and bel canto fioritura to handle this scene's hurdles with ease.

  • @perfumedlife

I always had the impression that she was a soprano though lady macbeth is a role that mezzos with an easyness in high tessitura sing often here baltsa laks the color of the mezzo she is brilliant with crystal clear high notes. I believe that in that aria she left her voice natural without giving it any color or throat . That's a soprano voice period.

Agnes Baltsa is magnificent, it's a real pleasure listening to this recording.
I just compared this to a recording by Elena Suliotis who apparently fancied herself to be the "next Callas".
it's fairly obvious when you listen to her rendition, which is just one undisciplined volcanic eruption after another, replying on vocal trickery and brute force to reach the upper registers.
The strain is painfully audible in certain segments.
Apparently she burned out fairly early in her career which is too bad.

  • @foropera

She has the right colour the agility, the ambitus, but does she have the vocal weight-on stage, not in studio? Especially in the 2 big finale who are so large, high, and exposed with the whole chorus behind.

...nor the "screaming" mezzosoprano that Verdi, himself, hoped for (and lamented that he never heard). Baltsa's voice is simply too beautifully EVEN from bottom to top for the role---dramatically. In my humblest aural estimation, NONE---no, not one---comes unto this role but by Shirley Verrett.

Its about tessitura.. it has always been about that. If a singer, who is a soprano is comfortable in a soprano tessitura and can make the notes written.... they generally are considered sopranos.. if they cannot "hang:" with the sopranos( and I quote Zajick who has a high F... then they are mezzos. Range in and of itself for me is not the key. Baltsa sounds bright, light an sopranoey... you noted she did not sound like a mezzo. .. Bartoli sounds like a soprano to me too.

    voce fuori di tutto.
    è soprano lirico spinto ?
    non.
    è mezzosoprano vero ?
    ancora meno.
    cosa è ?
    mistero...

    • @bodiloto

      @116109059931703256928
      come definirla ?

    • @bodiloto
      @bodiloto 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      deGrimbergen-Seneca perché ''definirla'' ?
      à cosa servono i stili amico ?...
      amore,odio,dolce,arrabbiato,vendicativo,poetico etc.etc.etc...
      ciao .

She is not a mezzo.. she is a soprano.. but these singers are very clever these days.. they realize with clever marketing they can be something if they are say mezzos singing soprano rep.. Or a so called mezzo like Bartoli with a high E flat(sustained).. Bartoli sounds like a soubrette to me. And Baltsa lacks the colortura for this role.. which is for a dramtic coloratura.. No matter that she makes the notes.

    • @Altonahh10
      @Altonahh10 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, Baltsa always liked a rather fast speed so that the coloraturas wouldn´t be too intense and she could rush over them a ittle ;-)

    Macbeth is not for Baltsa

  • @lhadzyan7300

Baltsa sings so GREAT maybe TOO MUCH for what the role requires, I mean, she is on tune in color and strenght to reach both the fast tempo and the wide range of it, however she is TOO MUCH PRETTY and sweet-softer and even warmer for what it requires, Lady Macbeth is HARSHER, COLDER AND DRYER or has some sort of metalic and darker undertones even on the higher coloraturas. It isn´t as if she isn´t singing well in all but... her voice isn´t fitted for the match on the role. She is lacking venom and a lot of the cold-calculated thought and boldness on her.

It most certainly does not sound like Baltsa here (either a mezzo) and the recording pitch sound a tone higher than supposed to.
