I really enjoyed speaking with these eclipse chasers over the past few weeks. Their passion for this wonderful natural phenomenon was infectious and there were so many more quotes I wished I could fit into this video. But you can read them here! www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/8/10/16114762/total-solar-eclipse-chasers-2017 -joss
Stephen Galise, a group of us will be heading down to south carolina. the weather forecast isn't looking great, but we'll try our best to find some sky. -joss
Good luck, that’s exciting you get to see it at the end of its journey. A co-worker (with an astronomy background) burst my eclipse bubble…I said we’re supposed to get 90% partial eclipse here in Cincinnati, he said “but it’s only 1% of the experience without totality”. Your video also just confirmed this :(
Insert Name I wasn't being edgy I was just being honest I'll probably be dead aswell because next time is a while from now far more than 38 years in the United States.
Insert Name I just accept the fact that I can't be here forever but I'll be here as long as can. Just as the guy in video accepts he may not make to the next one in the United States. Just as I accept I won't be able to see this one even though I love science and it's a true joy to see one with your own eye's in your own country which is not something I can do without a car living in someone else's house being called edgy.
SuperManBoy1 the next one in the US is in 2024, the path of totality will be crossing east/central Texas and heading north-ish across the continent. The guy in the video just talked about the one in 2070something to demonstrate how far out he had his eclipse trips planned.
I've just returned from seeing the eclipse in Dallas. I saw my first in Jackson, WY in 2017. This video is the perfect encapsulation of why you need to see this phenomenon. You owe it to yourself to see it in person.
7 years later and i finally saw my first total solar eclipse. I always knew they were legendary but this video really showed me how special this all is. You know i cried at totality. So grateful we get to be alive for this.
Similar feelings with me. After watching it from Missouri, I can understand why people are so moved by totality. It's unlike any experience I've ever felt or seen before.
I totally agree. Photos and videos don't do it justice. Seeing a total solar eclipse should be on everyone's bucket list. If you're close to one and you don't go there, you don't know what you're missing!
Just imagine all of these eclipses all across the universe, with a sun too large or a moon too small, and we just happen to be here to witness this one.
I saw the eclipse of April 8 from Torreon, Mexico... listening all these feelings made me cry, because that's exactly how i feel it. I'm a Geography Teacher and went to the totality with all my students... i'm glad that 59 people will never forget the moment and also will never forget me because thanks to my idea of going, they enjoy this miracle of nature :3
I don’t know why but I felt like crying most parts of the video. It’s for sure my favorite of all Vox Videos. “And life is precious. It’s fleeting. And it’s about the moments you can have , and the people you share it with” Kate Russo.
4:23 just made me cry INTERNALLY.. Me as a selenophile person, waiting again for so many years to witness the total eclipse, made me realize that those years, maybe.. let's just say my parents are already in a joyful and peaceful place.. That every moments, time takes place are needed to cherish and treasure it from the deepest bottom of your heart and from the farthest place of your mind Makes it so much much more than meets the eye
My pre-calc teacher was gonna watch a total eclipse with her husband 15 years ago for their 25 anniversary, but she is a woman that wouldn't miss school on purpose for a vacation, and sadly couldn't watch it. Then her husband told her the next one would be 15 years later in August, and at that time, my school didn't start school 'til September, so she happily promised that she'll go with him. 15 years pass by and things have changed in the school, including the start of the school year, which is now in August. "Oh no... What an I gonna do. I never miss school for anything unless I'm too sick or at a meeting...," she told us. Of course, as a class, we felt sympathy for her because she really wanted to have a special moment with her husband on their anniversary. She told us very sincerely that she promised to her husband and we understood. She then explained to us that during a total eclipse, there is an image that forms know as the "diamond ring" and that now for their 40th anniversary, her husband said he wanted to give her a "diamond ring". It was a heart-melting moment for all of us as students and I wanted to share it with y'all. Truly a beautiful story.
The april 8th 2024 total solar eclipse has been my first eclipse ever, and what an experience it was. It really was nothing I had seen before, and I really felt how such familiar objects like the sun and the moon, objects that we don't really think about in our daily lives, come together into something magical and unforgettable... It's really an experience that no photos or videos or even words will ever tell you exactly how it feels. You need to experience it yourself. I had the opportunity to photograph the sun's corona, but I didn't take pictures of the diamond ring. But you know what? I don't regret it. I still have that image burned into my mind, and I will never forget it.
The shadows begin to move , then double , then triple ... the birds go quiet as it gets darker and darker and then .... silence . The feeling of warmth that comes as the eclipse passes is unexpected , reassuring and then everything is back to normal except for a small part of you that remains connected to the universe somehow.
A few weeks ago I would have scoffed at how romantic they sound talking about an eclipse. However, I was lucky enough to witness the totality in person this time I feel very comfortable agreeing with everything they said. It truly is one of those things that everyone just has to make an effort to watch atleast once in a lifetime.
One needs to appreciate that anchor-man advertising as he did, the 'upcoming' report of the next total solar eclipse. Get him on one of your stories, Vox!
I experienced an almost total eclipse of the sun when I was a kid. It was the most surreal and intense thing I ever witnessed. Still gives me chills. I can only imagine a Total eclipse. Will definitely go after a total someday.
By the end I was about to cry and "May the shadow of the moon fall on a world of peace" just put me over the edge. Maybe in 2024 with the next one, man.
It was an amazing experience. My first eclipse in Western Nebraska on Aug 21, 2017. The description of what the sun looked like was accurate, but impossible to imagine or photograph. To me it looks like a bright LED ring with light wispy hairlike rays in all directions. The star Regulus was visible nearby with binoculars, and Venus was very bright to the naked eye. Night time birds and insects made a lot of noise as the sky darkened. The alpenglow in all directions is similar to a sunset with a semi-clouded sky.
We saw the total eclipse here in Nashville. Very inspiring and surreal. It is a dark unlike any other dark I've ever experienced. Nothing like dusk or night. It's like the air is glowing, getting dimmer and fainter...then suddenly it's daynight and darklight with stars everywhere. It is unforgettable because you get the overwhelming sense that you've never experienced this before.
This video is gorgeous. The passion that flows from this video is really infectious and I'm saddend by the fact that I will miss the total solar eclipse that will happen on my birthday, simply because I live in a different part of the world. Hopefully I will be able to chase down the next one. For everyone that will be witnessing this beautiful occurence of our universe, best wishes.
If you can't make this one, you could plan a trip to south america for 2019 or 2020. Or hold tight and we'll get another in 2024. It may be a bit of a wait but you'll get your eclipse! -joss
This video was beautifully made. All through watching it I felt like crying (but in a good way). Thank you for continuing to provide such well-crafted, insightful content that is so enjoyable to consume.
Here's a map showing of total eclipses for the next decade. Is there one that you could travel to? www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/list-total-solar.html -joss

I am!! I live in the bay area in California and the closest portion of totality is in Salem, Oregon (which is about 1,200 miles away). One word of warning though, if you plan on getting a hotel, then you won't find one. I booked my hotel room about 2 years ago and it was filling up then. CORRECTION: my drive to see the eclipse is 1200 miles round trip, not one way... but still, if you can go, then you should.

"May the shadow of the moon fall on a world of peace." I don't know why but we are so far from peace that the optimism of that man gave me chills.
Lol the world is NOT at peace right now 😂 In fact, we're on the brink of civil war or getting nuked by North Korea 💀😂
Ninabinaj Farquharson-Valdez Dude you just assumed were all from the US
I totally agree.... I still feel the goosebumps from those words and the stark reality of today.
The world is completely at peace, there is not a single intra state war going on.
Plus that was in 1979 at the height of the cold war.
Or Venezuela?
That last clip made me feel all warm and fuzzy. Wow, 38 years later...
Natalie R You'll be 60 something or dead.

By far, this is my most favorite video from Vox. I just love people talking about their passion. They don't just spout words but spirit.
I don’t know why but I felt like crying most parts of the video. It’s for sure my favorite of all Vox Videos.

this is one of the best videos on youtube
After you see one, you get to understand why all this people is so passionate describing them. Also one of the best videos ever made by Vox.

"Tales from the shadows of the moon" sounds like a kids story
The Mafia sounds like something of sci fi of Asimov or Arthur C.
Sounds like something Ursula Le Guin would write.
The Mafia I would read it. It sounds like an instant classic.
Sounds like the successor to Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon."
Socialism, sounds like a bad idea...
This one was very well edited!
DavidHarenstam just like all of their videos

I'm so glad I was there on August 21 2017 honestly the most magical event of my whole existence I was in Wyoming I got to witness the total eclipse ❤
well that's actually one of my favorite videos of yours, deeply beautiful
I can’t describe how much I love this video.
"May the shadow of the moon fall on a world of peace." Damn. That hits deep.
This made me cry
After seeing the eclipse for myself, this video has new meaning. Thank you for this awesomeness.

schmoab the corona was just the most beautiful thing. Kind of like comet tails coming out in all directions off the moon’s surface
This video is so visibly stunning.
"May the shadow of the moon fall on a world at peace."
We're sorry, Frank Reynolds! We really tried...

Vox liked my comment! So hawt 😍
Man. That ending hit me hard.
This so far is the only Vox video I'll occasionally watch again, because of just how beautiful and well edited it is. Nice job Vox!
The end was sad in a type of way
This gave me chills and goosebumps.
This was so touching by the end
This video is gorgeous. The passion that flows from this video is really infectious and I'm saddend by the fact that I will miss the total solar eclipse that will happen on my birthday, simply because I live in a different part of the world. This video was one of a kind. Beautiful. Does anyone know what is the piano music starting at 2:40?
claude debussy's claire de lune
It's a classic one. Everyone should know it
Debussy's Moonlight sonata. (edit: Claire de lune, which means moonlight, not to be confused with Beethoven's Moonlight sonata)
Clair de lune... a bit ironic considering that they are talking about the complete opposite of "clair de lune"
clair de lune by debussy
This was so beautiful thank you for making this video. I am now thinking of becoming an eclipse chaser.
I almost cried watching this video
Thank you Joss for the video. I'm getting more and more convinced it's not an event I want to miss. It might be worth the 15 hour one way road trip.
If you can't make this one, you could plan a trip to south america for 2019 or 2020. Or hold tight and we'll get another in 2024. It may be a bit of a wait but you'll get your eclipse! -joss

oliver eales could you explain?
oliver, we know the exact details of every eclipse for the next 1000 years at least. You can find them all here eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEcat5/catalog.html
oliver eales actually it isn't you can predict the path of the moon and where it might cross the sun's path in our sky.
It's going to be on August 21st across the whole united states. Don't miss it!!
I think this is my favorite Vox video yet.
Oh god this video is so strong... The power of a good video editor is no joke.
this video made me cry. beautiful
This video taught me much more than total solar eclipse
I come back to this specific video every once in a while because it reminds me how beautiful life can be and how fortunate we are to be living in the times we do. Carl Sagan said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience and this video perfectly captures that feeling.
From 2:01 to 2:27, those people described the experience in the simplest way possible.
I watch this video when I'm down so thanks ❤ my own insignificance has never been so comforting
Thank you Joss Fong. Your passion for astronomy was showing in this video. It helped to renew mine. So thank you.
Joss, you make the best videos here! Congratulations!!
After Seeing the eclipse for myself I pretty much agree with what everyone said in this video.
I can't stand Vox as a company, but I find myself rewatching this video from time to time because it's one of my favorites on the internet. Amazing job telling this narrative
April 8th, 2024 is approaching.
This is one of my favorite videos on TH-cam
This is such as special video
"May the shadow of the moon fall on a world at peace" that gave me chills
This left me in tears, I'm now trying to figure out how to get to Oregon

Murdes
This is a beautiful video. I wasn't interested in the topic but now I am.
that was mildly depressing at the end
This gave me chills and teared up my eyes. Absolutely gorgeous Vox, congratulations to everyone involved.
Damn this was really peaceful. Thanks, Vox.
I've seen the 1979 and 2017 totals in North America, couldn't make it to South America earlier this month, but maybe Dec 2020... and definitely 2024.
So exciting!! Who's watching the Eclipse?
I'm not from the US, and I'm not going to experience the total solar eclipse, but I have been following Vox for quite some time now, and this video is - in my mind - without a doubt your best one! Amazing!
I can’t believe Im about to see a total solar eclipse for the second time. And I’m only 15.
easily one of my favourite video ever. thank you for this
The title sounds like a HP Lovecraft novel
Beautifully done. Vox at its best!
That news reporter in the end was so chilling and awesome. Loved it.
Ironic, using the song called Clair de Lune (Moonlight) on a video about the moon taking light away.
May the shadow of the moon fall on a world of peace
The eclipse is 1,200 miles from me, should I drive there?
Depends. Is your life boring and meager? Because if so than yeah, I'd recognize that this is the best chance yours ever gonna get.
where are you now? what state or country?
.
Why the heck not? :D I would go!
I am!! I live in the bay area in California and the closest portion of totality is in Salem, Oregon (which is about 1,200 miles away). One word of warning though, if you plan on getting a hotel, then you won't find one. I booked my hotel room about 2 years ago and it was filling up then.

Oceans 11 ending music... absolutely brilliant vox
Our school bought Solar eclipse glasses for every student
wow loved the video!!! one of your bests ❤
Great Thumb Nail
Vox, you guys make amazing stuff. Keep up the good work!
Vox can you do a video about why Barber Shops have a Rotating Pole?
This was honestly one of the best Vox videos i've ever seen. Wow.
"May the shadow of the moon fall on a world of peace"
Hahahahhahahahahha
World is at peace? name one war going on right now.
Syrian Civil War
South Sudanese Civil War
Central African Republic Conflict
Blackforest98 syrian civil war!!! the Ukraine war!!!
Rewatching this before the 2024 total Eclipse. 6 years later it still makes me cry... Unfortunately I won't be able to watch a total Eclipse before 2034 (in India) or 2200 😅 (in Europe)
It sounds like these eclipse chasers all did some psychedelics before they saw the dark side of the moon.
Patrick Kelley you don't get it because you never experienced it yourself :-)
I've experienced two total eclipses, one annular, and one partial. These people are high. It's really dope and great but also really fleeting. For me, it's definitely not something I'd wax poetry about.
edit: oxford comma strikes again
Sven Krustaf how could you have watched two total solar eclipses unless your a very old man that knows how to youtube
That would actually be the bright side of the moon.
?? the world is bigger than the united states you know.
Vox is becoming the best channel on youtube.... I can only imaging what a pleasure it is to work on these kind of videos
my dad left me
CHEESE™
I can relate as well...
It's okay, nothing is wrong with you. Parenting is one the joys of adulthood he has missed out.
A world where nobody cares is callus, depressing and is morally and ethically wrong. I care but like most people have too many problems, not enough time, and am too depressed grieving for my own father. Good luck mate, you can make it if I can.
The Dan profile pic makes this look like bait.
Well scramvega? its 3 min over an hour now, Im ciorious
Please convey my gratitude to whoever involved in the making of this video! 💕
Nofifaction squad!
So close
Are fu fure fu fan sfell?
"may the shadow if the moon fall upon a world at peace" after the beauty of the rest of the video, this put a tear in my eye
*0:42** The animation + the narration = WORST ADVICE EVER! Have fun being BLIND!*
Illuminat3d you can look at totality and have no eye damage. The more you know eh!
When the sun is fully covered, you can actually take your glasses off for a couple minutes. You can only do this if you're in an area of 100% totality though.
Illuminat3d during totality you can look at it no problem. the damage occurs during the first moments after totality. so you can happily look at a complete solar eclipse no problem. just look away before the sun peaks round or you'll be blind for a few days.
Once the eclipse has reached totality, you can look at it with the naked eye. Any time before or after is a bad idea.
Jeremy Crocker Awww thanks Mr Genius but if you look at the animation again you'll see the character is staring at the sun as the eclipse is happening!
I witnessed the 2017 eclipse as a teenager, now years later I am lucky enough that the 2024 path of totality fell right in my backyard.
