Wolfe won a major regional using pokemon that were mainstream a decade ago, after competitive pokemon experienced some of the most intense power creep in last two generations. It's very impressive that he can win with multiple pokemon whose stats are considered pretty bad these days.
I know basically nothing about competitive pokémon, but i've been having a blast watching these, seeing stuff that in a normal playthrough makes no sense but here actually matters, it's incredible Congrats to Wolfe for winning his 10th regional, that seems super impressive
wolfe also has a youtube channel where he breaks down all his decisions before and during a tournament so that casual players like us can understand all the layers of strategy, it's quite good.
I’ll never compete because of the grinding required to set up a perfect team (only then to realize you don’t like one mon and need to switch it out for another mon from scratch) but it’s so fun to think about battling in a more involved way after spending my whole life playing casually.
10 Regionals is a pretty big deal. Hes also one of only 2 ppl to make it into the Worlds finals more than once. The other guy being the one who beat him in his first finals, and the only one to win Worlds more than once... or more than twice for that matter.
@@JforJonasThere are reads in chess, but they are not actually that common because high level players mostly have the common late game formations remembered,so unless anything is not a common move , there are no reads and mastermind moments, they're more like "insane memory" moments
@@VedantCvnoh for sure! Key difference is that the turns in Pokémon are doubled blind, making virtually every turn a read. I find it to be more similar to card games and even fighting games in that regard.
@@JforJonas also the fact that chess has many lesser possibilities (the possibilities for 1 turn in single battle is astronomically higher than a whole chess game, let alone doubles) mainly because chess lacks randomness and also Pokemon is the best turn based battle format , so its harder to read , needs more brains(sometimes) and is alot funnier than chess , but chess can be better than Pokemon in most of these parameters but very rarely.

@@ludi3444 I feel like Wolfes accolades far surpass Rays at this point. Winning back to back world titles is quite the feat and will always be a historic accomplishment. But the game was admitedly a lot easier back then especially when you didnt mind hacking in perfect teams and having a huge advantage over most of the field, which btw was only about 200 people competing to qualify. Today regionals alone can hit over one thousand players, with nearly everyone having fully optimized teams. The caliber of competiton is just on a whole other level now a days. And wolfe still consistently performs

The way Wolfey is always reflecting. Always taking notes. Always fully engaged. It's a stark contrast to seemingly every one of his opponents looking bored and waiting for the next big thing
All of Wolfey's pokemon were looking at him in this. All hoping, waiting. Every strategy from perish trap, to speed boost tailwind yanmega. They all were looking at him, like a finale of all the perished memorable characters looking down at a main character and the group that formed during their adventure. Each and every one watched as he made play after play, turning the game into what was thought as a loss, into a glimmer of hope. This was an intense rollercoaster, and Wolfe didnt just win, he won with the forgotten rain duo, politoed and kingdra, suck on that pelipper. Congrats Wolfe, for getting your 10th regional win!

Honestly love Marco using Jumpluff. Everyone's love for Wolfey is overlooking another great player, that may not have the subscribers, but certainly has the skill.
What makes this soo much fun is the team Wolfe brought here. If anything, that's what makes Wolfe fun to watch in general. His team is always unique and fun compared to the majority, and he still manages to get competitive, and in this case, win.

This might easily be the best set of competitive Pokémon ever played in the game's history. There have been only three Regionals in the history of VGC that were won by a player using Perish Trap, and it was all Wolfey.
