In the second episode of Don’t Call Us Poor, Hong Chuan Chuan is 7 months pregnant with a husband whose temper cannot be controlled. The impact of the violence at home is evident in her two daughters, and with a new baby on the way, the stakes are even higher.

@@jtynctyl i currently work at a hospital as an intern and i raised my concerns many times to my teachers that i want out because i'm going to lose my cool very soon and i'm afraid the situations might escalate but they insisted me on preserving. Trust me, i'm a very patient and calm person but working in this industry, i meet the worst people that are beyond my understanding and pure unreasonable. I get exposed to this situations and it changed me as a person just under the course of 2 months, I can't take it anymore and sometimes i feel kinda suicidal because if i were to ever lose my cool, i will get terminated.

He wants to feel that he has power over you. It will all stop if you stop giving him that power. Any time you are ready to walk away, just know that we will support you 200%. Do not be afraid.

Chuan Chuan is a sensible and long suffering woman. She seems resigned to her fate having married an immature, irresponsible, abusive, violent, mentally and emotionally unstable man who has issues with anger management. He even harms his children in his anger. Clearly her husband needs help and Counselling. He lives in his own trap and is affecting his loved ones. Chuan Chuan forges through her hardships for the sake of her 3 children and is doing all she can to keep the family together. At the same time she also wants to help her messed-up husband. The key now lies in her husband to make a radical change by getting treatment and Counselling on anger management so he can start living like a true man who can provide and look after his wife and children properly.
Such guy is beyond hope! Even counselling may not help. Best is put him in jail
she also has issues of her own, in that she allows someone else to dictate her happiness. there are also deeper issues why one would choose someone like sky as a life partner. she has to work on herself too, not just sky.
I actually think she would be better off without him. Her children will be damaged being exposed to this at home. Sad she is pregnant otherwise it would be better for her as a single mother. Sky uses the kids to hang onto Chaun Chaun. Choose your husband/father of your children carefully or a lifetime of unhappiness.

He is and he is my dad i just wish i could at aleast hit him once i hate him he when to jail so many time and sent my mom to Hospital a couple of times and even sent my younger sister and me to the hospital too and plus 1 time he force my mom to swollow a hole bowl of chill when she is still pregnant end up senting her to the hospital

From the way we see how Chuan Chuan responded to these questions with intelligent inputs, it appears to be that the family will be much better off without the husband. He is like an anchor to the family and must be cut loose.
Honestly speaking, this guy shouldn't even have a family. He is sick and no women should ever suffer at the hands of men. I am speaking as a child who lived through this nightmare as a kid and believe me when i say i was glad my mum brought us (3 kids) and left my dad for good. Through all the struggles, without our dad in the picture we became stronger and better people with all the help from the community. Now me and my sister are in Uni and my brother is in Poly and its no part thanks to my dad.
One thing I can NEVER understand is why they bother having so many kids if they very well know they cannot afford to provide them with a good growing environment and education needs. Without these children, these people can most probably save up and even travel after working for a while...

Those kids who use alot but, then they speak broken chinese or mixed languages at home thus all their language skills is 半桶水... Also chuan chuan is born in the 80s.... Most of their parents ll be chinese educated... 自己本身来自于华语家庭，父母不会听或讲英语，我上小学时因英语基础不好，学英语学的很辛苦! 而且英语是国际语言，在新加波尤其重要。so i kinda feel sad that i have to learn english in such a difficult manner i would rather be super proficient in my english and alright in chinese... Cos to me bilingualism is important but ya cos some familities the parents themslves are bad in chinese.... Its like a cycle lol

@KOTheWorld In the first episode uploaded in TH-cam, the daughter actually commented here and said that the family are doing well without their father, so yeah, eventually Chuan Chuan filed for a divorce and they are living with Chuan Chuan parents and very much happy now.

Thank you for this documentary. I thought live is easy in Singapore but boy was I wrong. This made my heart ache, seeing the struggles they have to go through. I was also a kid who lived in similar condition as chuan chuan's family situation except was neglected alot and in the end was taken out by the police because neighbor complain and put in salvation army for 10 years. Thankfully im out and even those years at the children's home was a nightmare. For those asking why kids don't look after their elderly parents, this is why. Because years of torture makes you confuse whether you should care for abusive parents or not

I really want to know what goes through his mind when he is beating his wife (plus she’s pregnant) I feel that sometimes I’m so disappointed in Singapore‘s law system. As what the chuanchuan said “what if it’s psychological Trauma?” I know ppo is a sensitive thing but, I’m truly at a lost of words at how our law has once again failed to protect those that fall through the crack

The world, by the poor:
The human condition is somewhat pretentious to me. Being alive never extended past opening my eyes at dawn, walking down the road with my faded floral backpack and the churning in my gut. I remember the fascination I found in strangers wearing nice ironed shirts, with worried faces and hands clasped tight on their bags with clasps and shining buckles. Why were you worried? You were the ones with nice bags and glistening watches.

I didn’t know people ate meals in the morning. Breakfast, they call it. Not till I saw kids with their packed lunchboxes, coveted models with the latest cartoon prints in bold colours- filled with loaves of bread that smelt of jam and other expensive things. Maybe that’s why I’m not very tall. Maybe. I could blame many other things about myself on where I grew up.
On the rain that fell against the windows on our cold and stuffy weekends, on the belts that fell with the smell of alcohol and tins of expired biscuit. On the world, that fell on our young eyes, heavy and cruel.

My sister never turned out much better than my them. She’d spend hours shouting in the office as the principal waited for my parents who’d never come. I’d spend hours waiting at the office, which reminded me of lavender air freshener and the nice lady who smiled at my mother with promises of money. Promises. Money. Answers to promises came by as often and money did where I came from.

You buy branded products. Buy things for the hype. Buy things to impress one another. Buy things to accentuate your individuality. You write cheap captions for laughs and likes in the hundreds. Where were the frames to capture my existence? Where were the numerous eyes and hands whose pocket money could have fed my parents and I? While you sat in planes traversing the world in all its vastness, my vision never stepped past the bus stop where we sold newspaper for pennies.

Realisation probably comes to you slowly as you turn your gaze from mine. I will reciprocate in kind, don’t worry.

Beautifully written- many find it difficult to understand how much it weighs on your heart and soul to have to struggle to survive each day, when the things people take for granted are a distant dream for you. It takes strength and bravery to face each day and not give up. Everyone deserves love, support and affection from their parents. I hope you find peace and contentment in life.
I bet Sky “forced” Chaun Chaun to have another baby because his narcissistic ego wanted a son. He is so horrible and she deserves much better. I hope she escapes this situation soon for her and her children’s lives.
I have watched this series twice and both times it is unbelievably heartbreaking because there are children involved. I hate how these people are unable and unwilling to break out of this cycle of abuse and poverty. I have been in poverty my entire life yet we live in a 5000sqft home and I some how was able to put my kids through piano lessons, take them on ski trips and put them through medical school although earning top academic scholarships really helped. I am disabled because of childhood abuse but I have not laid a single finger on my children and today they are both doctors, both concert pianists and are the most kindest, most gentle and most intelligent people I know. My son's girlfriend is shocked that they never fight which demonstrates that there is something wrong with society if people are expected to be hostile to one another where there is a disagreement. All children deserves a chance including these who are in this series but the adults are a different story.

Chuan chuan needs help to recover from this abusive rship, people around her need to support and encourage her.

My heart is crying for the children. They will be the next generation and yet what seeded in their hearts and minds are hardships. What adults does is something they will carry on in life. i wanna collect chuan chuan and her kids , give them everything i have now . chuan chuan doesn't deserve this at all . every word she said there , made all the sense . she proved the fact the government doesn't really care much about singaporeans , without even knowing it herself . the way she tried so hard to hold back her tears while being interviewed sensitive questions , are really something else . she puts her children , family ahead of her , sacrificing money for their safety and wellbeing , absolutely one of a kind . she loves her 'husband' as though they first met even after what he did before , she gave him chances time and again just to have a ppo rejected because the perpetrator refused .

Watching don't call us poor making me wanna go and work now. It made me realise that every day working outside is money. Money that I can save for my future and get a better life. Money can't find happiness but it's depending on situation to be honest.
Here in Indonesia, you can change your life and make a money with being an online motorbike transporter or ojek online or ojol we usually called it. Even here a ojol driver can buy a house, have a pilgrimage to mecca, etc. That's why our unemployemnt rate at the lowest point right now. Thanks to our startup company.

i think chuan chuan deserves so much better. she socute, so hardworking and she cares for her children so much, but sky is abusing her so much i think everyone who looks at them must feel ver bad for them. she is even going through such tough times but sky keeps hitting and abusing her >:(
