Thanks again! Will keep doing my best! Would love showcase some jazz listening bars. Little bit hard to access with camera and what not, but possible in some cases. I think I have at least one interesting place featured in my videos.
I really enjoyed seeing you at El Sur Records. Seeing you speak to your two friends {the owners of the shop I presume} in Japanese was outstanding. The selection of music was insane. I can see why you were digging it so much. I saw quite a few shops this week in various VC videos. But this was my favorite shop of the week by far. I got to get to Tokyo. Thank you very much Brian and Happy New Year to you~ Rob/Boston
Glad you enjoyed it, Rob in Boston! Thanks for commenting on my admittedly a-bit-over-the-top enthusiasm, but I was really overwhelmed. Records stores are so cool! I'm happy to share a new favorite places in Tokyo! Come and visit us! And from Tokyo to Boston, Happy New Year! 良いお年を!
I have never seen such a shop - what a treasure of amazing music. I wonder how he sources all that obscure & interesting music. I checked out his web site - well done with nice descriptions of his offerings. Thanks for the fun visit. Mario in Costa Rica
Mario in Costa Rica, you're welcome! Indeed a treasure trove! I guess the owner has been collecting music his entire life - I can't imagine how much musical knowledge is known between the two of them!! They've probably forgotten more that I have every learnd! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it! Brian in Tokyo
Hi brian that’s a cool find another il need to go to lol i might not go back to uk lol . Nice guys in shop too . Probably need 3 weeks in toyko to see everything. Great video. Joe
@ hi brian thanks for responding. Yeah wondering how many weeks i should spend in tokyo when i come for holiday. Il research more closer to the time. Look forward to seeing further videos. Take care joe
I visited Japan once before I moved here, and I was hear about 12 days maybe, and I think I spent 5 days poking around Tokyo, 2-3 days in Kyoto/Nara, a coupl of days in Hiroshima, and then I spend 1-2 more days in Tokyo on my way out. That seemed like a perfect trip! Happy planning!
I really enjoyed this video out of all your shop visits. And your genuine enthusiasm shone through. Loved hearing Tsuda Koji 津田 耕治 what I voice - retains that real old folk style of singing! I had to look him up later, I made my (Japanese) husband listen, he had never heard of Tsuda - although he's not much of a fan of enka either LOL. I noticed some Greek Rembetika music (under the Cuban poster), I grew up in a Greek area in Melbourne, Australia & used to hear it blaring out of cafes in our neighbourhood or my friends' parents playing it. This probably contributed to opening my mind to world music from a very young age. El Sur what a treasure! I'd love to get in amongst all that stuff there. We will have to make a pilgrimage next time we are in town. You must go back and do some deep dives with the guys into some of those obscure genres ( I'm guessing most of us have never heard before. )
Wow, this is such a nice comment to receive. I really appreciate it. I just love Record Shops. They're our little shrines to music, aren't they?!?! Each one is so lovely and special but this one indeed was especially nice and the friendly gents who seem like the oldest of pals were very kind and sweet to invite me so warmly into they're world! Wasn't that Enka moment funny! Wow! Greek area of Melbourne, sound fascinating! Paul Simon has a lyric music filtering out of neighbourhood windows. What is it... might come to me later. And yes, you are so right, going on an all day guided deep dive with those guys would be amazing! It's always great to share some new discoveries! Thanks for watching, and I hope you make your pilgrimage to El Sur one day! Until then, please stay in touch! Thank again and Happy Holidays from Tokyo!

Jim! I'm so happy to be connected again. I keep forgetting what page I'm on but I think I wrote you a couple years back seeing your Littlefield books in a bookstore here but I'm not sure if my message ever mad it to you. And I know that I've seen you here before and maybe I've already repeated this story once but happy to be connected again! It's always great to be connected with other music (and photography) lovers. Happy New Year to you yours!!
Cool looking shop and seems like it’s run by nice friendly people. I had to pause and look up that Marloes record and ordered a copy. I’m interested trying to check out those Nigerian albums as well, a task for the upcoming year. Hope you and yours have a nice and safe New Years, cheers.
Thanks for watching the video and glad to read that you enjoyed and even scored a record spotlighted in the video. Hope you enjoy the Marloes record! Yes, I'm now listening to the Nigerian Records I scored and loving them to pieces! Wishing you very happy and safe New Years as well, @robbie_eee! Best from Tokyo!
Thanks for saying so, Pat! It's really encouraging! I just mentally re-bookmarked your channel and am looking forward to checking out some vids, I've just watched and liked your (and Kevin's) Top 10 debut albums! Great and fun insights and I would concur on the merits of so many of the records your mentioned: Doors, Zappa, Crimson, Zeppelin, Jimi, Floyd. I spotted some Japanese pressings in there too, Van Halen and Led Zeppelin! I have some Rainbow, ELO, Jethro Tull in the collection but I can't say I know them like I'd like to. I'm inspired to pull some of those out and give them some spins! ...which I also just commented on your video! Thanks again!
I thought this shop had closed down... Did he relocate? Last time I was there was 2016. It looks like in my memories, but a little different, a little bigger, and more CDs. It was my favorite shop in Tokyo, great prices too, glad to see you as excited as myself being there! Stunty (edited, as I left this comment from my french channel ^^)
I thought you might like this place, Stunty. He said he has moved twice I think in the last 28 years, so maybe it was located in different place when you visited last. I was very excited to find this place, and Harada san, the proprietor was very very nice! Looking forward to my next visit. Thanks for watching, and Happy New Year!
@@tokyorecordstyle when I visited it, it was much less well advertised from the street, and really difficult to find. I remember it being like a little walk from the Shibuya crossing. Looking forward your next findings there
I don’t know if you’ve spent much time in Kagurazaka or your dietary leanings, but there was a place there called Martini Burger, started by a New Yorker who is an old friend of mine. He’s since moved to another country but he was in town a few months ago and we met up to tour his old stomping grounds; one of which is Mash Records. Mash is B1 and it’s now a performance space/bar. Formerly a record store of which remnants of the records are there. The decor is Victorian and dark with a low platform stage with lots of guitars. It’s a photographic marvel and its demise is imminent as the building owner is selling the building for demolition and the tenant needs to find other digs. Seeing as he is in his 70s, I’m not sure how he is going to reinvent himself in these economic conditions. My point being; we are always at a turning point with some of these old stores, as you very well know. El Sur was recently covered by Ella Style on TH-cam; did you see it? You should. Great impromptu piece here. I don’t know how you trade off between a selfie stick and a tripod. I assume you did this solo; what like two nights ago? Hats off. Seriously.
Thank you for the watching my videos and leaving this long comment. Kagurazaka is a lovely pocket of Tokyo and Martini Burger and Mash Records sound like nice places. I wish Mash many more years of music-celebrating. Same for El Sur. It's inspiring to see people who continue dedicate their lives to promoting music in these ways. May we all be so passionate! Happy New Year :-)
Great tour of this very unusual store. Keep up the Tokyo trawl, throw-in a few jazz listening bars as well if you can.
