I totally agree - if a batter calls time verbally that second time, just ignore it. If he calls time, throws his hand up in the air, steps out of the box? Then you give them the strike. We already worry about the umpire's sight, we don't need to worry about their hearing, too. Otherwise, that leaves room for the batter to play things off, too. Antonelli is right , as an umpire I have on more than one occasion not granted time to a batter . Why grant it when you know granting it is gonna result in a problem . Not a good game management move . The ensuing arguments certainly took more time from the game than having the rule would ever have saved , So ultimately, you’re not speeding the game up. Just ignore the request and let play continue.

@@emmanuelwood8702 It WAS an automatic strike that was called. To be technical, under the original rules of baseball, Bogaerts gets to tell the pitcher where to throw the ball. But rules change.

Hey Matt, were any of those "plenty of times" you tried calling timeout and weren't granted after the pitch clock rules were instituted? With the pitch clock rules, just asking for a timeout is an automatic strike.

I didn’t realize calling for a second time out is an automatic strike. I’ve never seen that mentioned before, and certainly never saw it in a game. I thought the implementation would be to just not grant time. Is this a new 2024 rule
I think the umpire called time for him on the first pitch since he was arguing. Then, Bogarts actually called time himself on the last pitch which the umpire granted and then called him for the timeout violation. If that was the case, shouldn’t they just let the player argue the call all they want, and if they’re not ready by 8 seconds, call the pitch clock violation there. Don’t just charge them a timeout without their consent to save him from the clock.
We wouldn't even need a pitch clock if it wasn't for all the batters that do the annoying routine in between every pitch though. Once the pitcher has the new game ball after any given pitch (granted that process might have to be mediated more by the ump), start the clock. Get in the box, pitch, play baseball. I think it would add a ton of excitement to the game if pitchers could fast pitch (like a no huddle or a fast break). And batters gotta be ready!
And also a player has to be quite and let the umpire call the game, there is a new rule and the catcher in the other team is listening and talking to his teammates
Batters just need to get in the box, get ready to hit and then hit. They're lucky they even get time outs for no reason, they have huge batters eyes behind them, and no-one should be moving in their eyeline, so what possible reason does a batter have that the Umpire wouldn't also notice and call time themselves. They wouldn't have this pitch clock problem if they just played like they did back before WW2, where no-one would call for time for no reason just to disrupt the flow of a pitcher. Games used to be done with in 2 hours, they don't need to go for over 3.
If they weren't wasting time just to waste time & disrupt the pitcher, and games were going back to finishing below 2 and a half hours, those situations they could just back away & ask for time and would get it. The pitch clock reduced games from over 3 hours on average, back down to just over 2 and a half hours. If players keep up the good pace the pitch clock will fade away in importance and the current "1 time per at-bat" will be used for those rare situations where it's needed.

I agree! Keep clock timing outta baseball! Stop all this goofiness! Also, ties for regular season games would be alright too... philosophically a "good" game (as opposed to blowouts) and a good excitent generator for the competitiveness of the next meeting of those same two teams.
Honestly, with all the other changes in the game over the last few years, the pitch clock at least makes a bit of sense. Controlling fielder placement, number of pitchers/position players on a roster, 3 batters per pitcher, electronic pitch communication, etc. are all more damaging than the pitch clock.
Keep clock timing out of basebal... it''ll stop all this tension on the batter at the plate, as well as stopping the attendant goofs (as shown in this video). Here's a better way to limit the length of regular season games: Tie games for regular season games would be alright... a tie game philosophically being a "good" game (as opposed to a blowout). Ties often indicate teams with very good players! Plus a previous tie game between two teams would be an excitent generator for the next competitive meeting of the same two teams... giving more wow to the next win!

This pitch clock,.time out stuff is nonsense, it needs to end. It stops the cat and mouse game with the batter and pitcher. If games are too long just end at 9 innings, stop the silly ghost runner, and implement ties into the game. No more pitch clock and restrictions on batters timeouts.
It's also nonsense to sit around for five minutes while the pitcher goes through an outrageous rigamarole before throwing a pitch and the batter stepping out eight times.
@@ItsAllAboutGuitar spoken like someone who's never played baseball in their life
Ditch the pitch clock? Hell yea. It ABSOLUTELY ends the pitcher vs batter meta-game.
But, implement ties? Hell no.
I don’t know why you would say time but why would you also say say down ? 😝😝😝😝
Folks comment Umps can’t see. Now they can’t hear. Scrub this rule already.
This is the bullshit that makes me not watch baseball.
Another reason why this stuff was stupid in the first place.
Too much attention on “speeding up the game”. It’s ridiculous. I’ve never been to a game and wished it would end sooner. If you’re tired of watching, then leave or change the channel. The needless micromanagement is ruining the game.
Looks like an umpire made a bad call. So, baseball is clearly a terrible sport.
I agree with you. The umpire was on a power trip. F him.
This whole thing would of been avoided with the computer doing balls and strikes. Would eliminate most arguments, this crap and ejections. Play ball!
Clocks wtf
pitch clock needs to be done away with it is unnecessary; simplify the rules 95%+ of which are unnecessary
This is why i don't watch MLB anymore
Who cares it's one at bat. Play the game and don't litigate every single negative outcome
Agree, Your Out, Pouting an Whining will accomplish Nothing. Welcome to Nothing is Fair in Life.
One at bat…can change the entire game.
@@someoneyoudontknow7705Of course it can, but this doesn't mean it will. It's baseball....stuff happens, move on to the next play.
Yep. an Its a GAME. Not Real Life Dramatic Life Changing Concerns, Get on with the Game, @@tgorski52
This is so dumb. Let the guys freaking play. These ‘rules’ are becoming a joke.
I hate all of this pitch clock nonsense. If you really want to shorten games and save wear and tear on pitchers, just give the batter three strikes to put the ball in play. End the round after round of 10, 12, 14 pitch at bats because the batter can foul them off. If you’re that good, put it in play somewhere or you are out, just like on a third strike fouled ball bunt.
stupid rules get stupid results. bet hey the ADHD crowd is happy with 2hour games.
The pitch clock is necessary. These things happen. There is no need to talk when you are at bat….be quiet.
Umpires already doing what MLB umpires do. Tends to get worse every year.
