- Relaxing traditional Korean shave in the newly remodeled "historic" 성우이용원 Seongu Barbershop in Seoul, South Korea.
Mr. Lee was born and raised in the family home where his grandfather opened Seongu Barbershop in 1927. At that time, Mr. Lee’s grandfather was the second Korean who was given a permit for barbering by the occupying Japanese.
It was in the 1960s when Mr. Lee began cutting hair. He learned everything from his dad and worked with him until his dad decided to retire. In the 1960s, Mr. Lee remembers there used to be 4-5 barbers working at the shop.
As you’ll see in this video, Seongu Barbershop has had an incredible transformation!
Shortly after filming with Mr. Lee in 2019, a severe storm damaged his shop beyond repair. Mr. Lee told us thankfully no customers were in the shop at the time!
Sadly, restoration was not possible so a new barbershop was constructed instead. Mr. Lee says he is very happy with the new shop and enjoys working there 💈❤️ He has been overwhelmed with lots of new customers visiting the shop now so he continues to be very busy cutting hair.
Although his beloved shop has changed, inside the spirit of the old shop remains... The potato starch, watering cans, bar soap to wash your hair, vinegar rinse, pink towels, and red phone ☎️
Mr. Lee has been keeping an eye on the number of views his videos have and is amazed with the popularity of our original videos! 🙌🏼

one of the best shave, another few that i hope you revisit is the one in japan and hongkong. also i like these type of barber that press and pull your skin rather than those that ask you to stick your tongue out, do this and that. a shave should be as relaxing as possible.
The sounds, the shave, the towel floofing the hair. So relaxing.
The legend: Mr Lee. His finesse, his detail, his silent laser sharp focus on what looks like one of the best shaves in the world. Def on my list.

First of all this guy's a genius with the razor blade. I'm not sure if I'm totally in love with the remodel, but mr. Lee's here so makes all the difference in the world. His use of strops when sharpening his razors brings to mind an old world mentality. The only thing missing here is the spot where he had the shaving cream ring. Thank you for posting another wonderful video!
Can I ask why barbers these days don't strop their razors anymore?
@Tim S mostly because they use disposable razors for sanitary reasons. And you wouldn't strop a disposable razor.

Very glad for Mr. Lee that he has a new and modern shop. Must admit I miss some of the old features like that big metal thing that he use to make the shaving lather on. Never figured out the story there. Thanks Harry.
my theory is that korean officials gave him notice to stop doing that for health & sanitary reasons, they probably noticed seeing how big the video got. or maybe a fire hazard

Mr Lee is a living legend ! I was is Seoul & Busan last summer and had the most amazing time in both cities. back again this summer as might have to pay Mr Lee a visit.

This was great. The strop work of Mr. Lee, the crisp sound of the razor cutting through the hair, the wash with soap. Just like going back in time. Even Mr. Legend himself standing guard 😂 Though I think that’s someone else this time😊

Really I prefer that straight razor than the replaceable blade ones myself. But you probably get a closer shave with the replaceable.

Watching this video gives me a feeling of happiness and sadness at the same time. I feel happy because the gentleman has been able to update his barbershop, which reflects that he's doing much better. However, I also feel sad because something has been lost. There used to be an authentic nostalgic feeling. Although I'm a woman and don't go to barbershops, watching these videos helps me relax my mind before sleep. Seeing the old barbershop transported me to the past. I suppose for the visitors who came before the remodeling, it was quite an experience to be served in such a special place. But now, with the renovation, it has lost that charm and seems like just an ordinary barbershop.
