My husband's grandmother is an animal hoarder (currently ~20 cats and 1 dog). I've cleaned her floors for her in the past and it is SO hard, both emotionally and physically. We took one of her cats (with her consent, obviously) and she is an absolute darling. She hated it there and with us she's the queen of our house. ❤

@jeanmccallum-xs8rk I'm pregnant and not a family member by blood with keys to her house. I haven't cleaned for her in several years. I haven't been to her house to visit since Christmas eve 2022.
I'm not about to put myself or my baby at risk to physically fight someone over their cats (because she would indeed throw hands). Her son is her power of attorney. He will handle it and we will help find homes for her kitties when the time comes.
I do agree with you that the cats aren't taken care of to a level that they deserve, but they do still receive vet care. I know one of the cats has diabetes and he is being managed with medication.

I attempted to do some organizing/cleaning for a hoarder friend. The house was tightly packed (trails) and every horizontal surface piled high. But frequently I'd discover drawers and cabinets that were nearly empty. I think there was a visual component to my friend's hoarding -- he needed to see everything.

The infuriating thing is people in general care more about the animals than they do the kids. I grew up in a very small town where there was a known animal hoarder. She was reported numerous times. Animal protection eventually came in and took away all the animals citing the entire home as an unfit environment. Social services came in but left all 3 kids in the home. One of them was in my class, and she smelled so terrible that all of us smelled like her at the end of the day. The kids never were taken away from that woman.

I love your videos and I watch one whilst taking breakfast every Saturday to get me in the right spirit for tackling another part of my hoard, section by section (just like you advised). I work 40-hour-weeks and when adding the commute, I don't spend much time at home between Monday and Friday and consequently I don't get much done during the week, but nowadays I go all in every Saturday and Sunday! I have also followed your brilliant advice to sort things into categories and into tubs, and it has helped me tremendously! Just becoming aware of the sheer amount of stuff I have in every category is mindblowing! I started with my (very small!) bathroom and its overflowing cabinets. Oh boy!!! 😱 I mean: who needs 30+ lipsticks, 30+ bottles of nail polish, 25+ bottles of shampoo, and 40+ bottles of shower gel? 🤔 I have tossed a lot of stuff, I have asked friends and family to come and help themselves to what they want - and now it's all reduced to manageable numbers. 🎉 I still don't need to buy shampoo or shower gel in the foreseeable future 😅 Besides, the fact that I cleared out the room entirely, as if I just moved in (another advice you gave!), allowed for a deep cleaning - it's all shiny and sparkling now! - and it also gave me a chance to rearrange my stuff in more convenient ways. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! My bedroom and its stuffed-to-the-brim closets are next 💪🏻👵🏻 However, I still need to work up an enormous amount of courage to tackle my kitchen, the room of doom that is supposed to be my guest bedroom, and my basement 😅 But I am on it - baby steps, but steps nevertheless 😇

i love these videos and i am so happy to have stumbled upon them. it is true also, that hoarders should not be villainized; they are just broken and in trouble, and in need of help, compassion, and psychological remedy. i am schizophrenic and have ocd, and so i do have a clutter and hoarding problem myself. when i became homeless, i uses to live in a flimsy little shelter that was not only nasty when i got there, but that i had a hard time keeping up with myself. one day, i found a kitten; a runt left behind because it was too slow and ditzy to keep up with its mother. it was my intention to bring it to a shelter, but we had quickly bonded, and it was the first time in a long time that i had some kind of companionship. she was abandoned and alone, just like me. i took her in and for the first time i had something to dedicate my love and care to, because at the time i couldnt even do that for myself. i started to clean our shelter and develop a routine around maintaining the space, because i didnt want my kitten to get sick. i had found the willpower to get my shit together and organize and clean, because i cared so much for this small and helpless thing that i thought deserved so much better.
it has been about 5 years since then, and my kitty has grown to be so healthy and strong!! i still do struggle with organization because i am the way that i am, but i am definitely getting better about figuring out what works for me. progress even if it takes time is still progress. i always make sure to at least keep everything sanitary and non-toxic, and to uphold a routine of sweeping and throwing trash out. one of my rules of thumb is that if something stinks, it IMMEDIATELY has to leave the house.
best wishes good sir, and thank you again for creating these videos. they are not only quite satisfying to digest, but also help in devising methods of approaching the filth and how to most effectively tackle it. =)

Then later in life I unknowingly rented a house to a couple of pet hoarders......they used the master bedroom as a dog kennel.....the bathroom... you know what walking into my house was like....it took $10,000 to make it livable again so I could sell up and walk away. To you and I it's probably super logical to just call for help. To them it's not seen as a problem, it's seen as an extension of themselves/their emotions. I used to live with someone who was a hoarder. You couldn't throw anything away because it was either an emotional or financial loss in some way to her. Come to find out a lot of the reason she hoarded was she didn't receive the love and affection growing up that she needed so she constantly bought things to fill that void.

I just found your channel yesterday and I’m binge watching. I am in complete awe of what you do. You’re pretty funny, too. 😁
If the landlord/property owner isn’t a family member or personal friend of yours, I hope you were fairly compensated for this work. I saw on your other vidz you donate your services, and i think that is beautiful and amazing. ❤❤❤. Im a pretty stoic person, and the house with the woman with the back/spine surgeries, and how you were so compassionate with her situation…i was damn near close to welling up. But the socialist in me…well, you know how we feel about landlords. 😜. No matter how much zen cleaning out a hoarder house gives you, make the landlord compensate your time and labor.
Keep on doing what you do.

"...like, dude, you need to mow your door." 🙃
On occasion I deep clean friends'/relatives houses when they are hospitalized (or as a present when they've left on vacation), which I enjoy even though it's hard. Your sense of humor will make my next clean more enjoyable.

I like that your sense of humor is coming out more! It's like getting to know a friend who's shy at first, and ends up being the life of the party. Glad I was here pretty early, it's cool to see ya opening up. :)

I had to clean a house like that once. I had to heat water on the one burner I got to work. Just so I could clean. You’re a brave man and your son. You’re both great people.

When the camera fell, I experienced how the filth must feel when you’re swooping in to knock it into next week! Lol Great point of view shot! Lol 😂

Thank you for telling folks that hoarding is a mental health issue; I'm sure alot that's not well known. Your analogy was great about expecting a person with a broken leg to jog. Fantastic job as always.
