Russel Brookes and Andrews Heat for Hire is undoubtedly one of the best partnerships in rallying history. The partnership is in my opinion among the top three in rallying the other two being Martini-Lancia and Subaru-555. For most of us rally fans in Kenya,we had no clue what "Heat for Hire" was all about as we pored through MOTORING NEWS,AUTOSPORT,RALLYSPORT and other motorsport publications of the era. We do recall,though,the excellent coverage in these publications as Russell Brookes and Jimmy Mcrae did battle on British rally stages in Opel Manta 400 group B rally cars. I first saw Russel Brooks on a beautiful clear cold boxing day on the stunning stages of Mynydd Epynt. He was then driving a Mini Cooper S and it was possibly 1966ish. I followed him ever since in his Mantas, Chevettes, Sunbeam Lotus, Escorts and Sierras. My favourite was the Lotus Sunbeam and, I owned two, possibly because of Russel. Amazing amazing career and gave me so much pleasure through forests and parkland, and Donington Park and the Isle Of Man. So privileged to have seen him so many times and wish his family all the support and kindness. RIP great man. You will always be alive on such video clips as these and thousands more; a very fine tribute.

Brookes would have to have the most unlikely personality to pick as a rally driver I have seen since I have been involved with the sport since the 1960s I would pick him as a guy who kept pigeons for a hobby, not 120 mph on mud within inches of trees!
