Baldwin produced concert grands in the US and I've heard Jorge Bolet in Germany twice playing them back in the late 80s.

God I love Mason & Hamlins. When they're good, they can easily be on par with Steinways.

Mr. Estrin . . . thinking about your comment about there only being two concert grand piano producers in this country . . . do you have any statistics as to the number of young people being trained to perform to your level of artistry? I am wondering if the young people have the discipline to stick with such a level of training anymore. Thank you . . . and thank you for your videos!

To be honest, there are plenty of young people in the USA that are performing Classical repertoire. I see them at the piano competitions. But there are still others that are playing jazz and other types of music. Most of them aren't playing American made Steinways, the NY Steinway. Most are playing Hamburg Steinways in the competitions. Few if any are playing Mason and Hamlins, it's not a commonly found piano or one used currently at competitions (not that it isn't worthy, it just isn't used). Other pianos most commonly used in competitions are Fazioli 9 and 10 foot grands, Shigeru Kawai and Yamaha's 9 foot grands. In the USA, most concert grand Steinways I've seen are used in concert halls, schools and large jazz venues. There are some in studios as well. Mason and Hamlin are used by piano aficionados and in a few places in America while Steinway is a much more commonly found instrument that pianists will play at venues

the peak year for American piano production was 1914. There were hundreds of brands. Some of the best: mason and hamlin, steinway, kurtzman, AB chase, chickering, Knabe. It's been a long slow decline in the piano business but there are still the magnificent masons and steinways although I consider a good mason far superior to steinway. It's just a personal bias because I play a 1924 mason AA scale. It constantly amazes me with the beauty of sound that it makes.

I don't know if this is up there with any of the very few brands you'll find in concert halls (and I can't know what it feels like to play); but for $26k, some one got a _helluva_ lot of old school tone. I don't know if you could do better for that money.

Great Mozart selection. Horowitz played that one too.

THIS is why American-made pianos are superior to any other brand - the tonal quality of this piano is absolutely incredible and FAR above any other piano made today!!

That's subjective. Not that this piano doesn't sound wonderful but there are other brands that aren't American that for other people will sound just as or more wonderful to their ears.

Nothing sounds as good as a concert grand piano! The casters on this one look too small for the size of piano.

SO much better sound than those sloppy lop-sided Steinways of the era! M & H and Baldwin were superior in every way to Steinway!
