    That little girl was just an absolutely amazing gymnast! Modern day gymnasts cannot come close to Oksana's perfection and she could teach them a thing or two about not pausing between elements - amongst other things! ❤

    I can watch Oksana's routines over and over again. She puts so much beauty and grace in her work. As for Biles, it's all strength and no grace.

    I LOVE Oksana! She was so quick and confident on beam, and always had beautiful toe point. I still think it's a tragedy that she didn't get to compete in the 1988 Olympics (she was the alternate). She was the epitome of ARTISTIC gymnastics!

    Oksana was one of those rare gymnasts. She had personality, artistry, and difficulty. Such a shame she had some bad luck when her bars grip broke

    Anyone else thinks that she just looks so light up there? Like she is a feather and not a difficulty pulling gymnast. I so love this routine!

    Lovely. Such fluidity and ease in the way she moves. No funny business. No long pauses before big moves. Just smooth and easy going.

    What a sprite! One one of my favorites. Everything is seamless and so expressive & precise. She inspired Dominique Dawes & Shannon Miller and probably many others. Exquisite gymnastics.

    It IS called an Omelianchik. You are right. Catalina Ponor does it(did it) in her beam routine too; its a backwards dive with a halfturn. Gorgeous..so was Oksana:)

    I've seen a lot of balance beam routines but hands down this is propably the best. She's so confident and sharp, great balance and great difficulty👑

    Omeliantxik seems to me like the Soviet Silivas or Silivas the Romanian Omeliantxik, whatever you want.
    Although both were representatives of their schools, they had similar bodies, they were very artistic, with double diagonal floor exercises and a gold medal in that event and above all very loved by the audience with a smile always while they performed.
    It was obvious that they enjoyed this sport as much as they were born.

    I should have said Catalina Ponor does the backward dive into handstand part: she doesnt do the Yurchenko loop around the beam. But the move is named after Oksana:)

  • @MANMARTRE
    @MANMARTRE 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The circle under the beam was originated by Nathalia Yurchenko of the USSR, while Julianne McNamara of the USA did the circle under the beam from a straight body planche. Both are on TH-cam to be discovered!

    Anyone know why her career was never as successful as (I, at least think) it should have been?
    Is it perhaps because there was so much competition in the 1980s, with the more senior gymnasts, because I've seen her aged 15 and she was amazing on UPB as well.

    • @intldawn
      @intldawn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mindrolling Part of it was just bad timing, I think. She never really fell off between ‘85 and ‘88 but I also don’t think she got significantly better. She did upgrade some of her routines as she got older and taller but the Soviet team was just so deep back then and I think her teammates just passed her up a bit. Shushunova got better in my opinion as the ‘80’s went on then Bogi started moving up the ladder. Plasma was consistent and steady but never reproduced the results she had in ‘85 and she occasionally had critical mistakes that kept her off the podium. Plus the Romanians got quite a bit stronger with Silivas and Dobre, too. It’s a shame because Strazheva got hurt in Seoul but since it was the middle of the competition, the Soviets couldn’t bring in an alternate to compete at that stage.

    Is there a story behind why her gymnastics fell off a little bit and she was only an alternate? Her beam and floor were definitely stronger than shushonova, except when shush did the double layout.

    • @MrMartinportnoy
      @MrMartinportnoy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +dazed darla Her coach said in an IG interview that the official reason was finishing 8th at the '88 USSR Cup, which served as Olympic trials. She was bloody unlucky, her grip broke and she fell off bars. There were a lot of stories going around at the time, like she was "punished" for her 5th AA at Rotterdam Worlds, I don't know how much was true. Anyway, seeing her as the alternate is one of my worst gymnastics memories...
