    I love games where the advantage is contained in subtle points such as trading light square bishops when you know your pawns will be on light squares and your opponent will be locked into dark squares. It wasn't long ago that I had no appreciation for this, but so many games hinge on gaining then holding a small advantage in position or grabbing a single pawn.

    3:33 look at this beautiful spiral symmetry. Like a top down boxing match where black is throwing a punch . King is a head, and all the white is lacking is another rook on D2 for a beautiful rectangle.

  • @DrQuatsch
    @DrQuatsch 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I saw your comment on the livestream. Unfortunately Giri couldn't go for a win. He was always the underdog for the blitz deciders. Not only because Carlsen is reigning champion in that discipline as well, but also because he almost never plays blitz games.

    • @DrQuatsch
      @DrQuatsch 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the few players with a neutral record against Carlsen in the classic format. Not saying that he would be the favourite, but he's good enough to hold him off... Anyway, that was not the point of the comment. The playoff was never going to be classic format, but blitz. So if Giri wanted to win the tournament, then his best chance was winning his match against Wei, because he is the underdog in a blitz playoff against Carlsen.

    Why would you take care to warn the viewer before spoiling the tournament result in this video, and then go right ahead and spoil the result in the title of your round 2 video, making it impossible to avoid? I certainly would have preferred to watch coverage of the final games without knowing who won beforehand.

    • @captainnautilus9578

      because the white king is more active, and threatens kb6

    • @devilhex2802
      @devilhex2802 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Captain Nautilus the kb6 threat can be handled by kc7. After Kc7 white king is completely denied any infiltration attempts.

    • @captainnautilus9578
      @captainnautilus9578 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sure but the black king is also stuck to the defense of the queens side pawns, white can push the connected pawns and its completly winning... if the black king leaves c7 the white king runs to the king side and its over

    • @captainnautilus9578
      @captainnautilus9578 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      white has the opposition and an extra tempo with the queens side pawns

    • @devilhex2802
      @devilhex2802 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Captain Nautilus well I don't think black's king being on defensive is a concern if you are gonna play for draw. But yeah, black king can't move from c7. If it moves, white king will infiltrate. I missed the move a3 (for some reason I only considered a4, lol). Anyways thanks, Bxc5, Kxc5, kc7, a3, a5, a4. After this black king has to move which result in his loss.

    I would like to suggest the game by Y Habu, winning against P K Wells.

  • @devilhex2802
    @devilhex2802 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Isn't Bc3 @6:46 a bad move?? Cause you don't end up saving any pawns and actually lose all pawns. Better is just Kg7 straightaway. Now Black has to chose between Kxc6 and Bxf6. If Bxf6, then Bxf6, Kxc6 and then Bc3 will save that pawn. Then Black can try to take the King side pawns with the king. If Kxc6, then white gets three paws for a bishop after Kxh8, Kb6 and Kxa6 after some black move. That might still be winning for white though.

    Magnificent Carlsen!

  • @xkambar
    @xkambar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can't really understand one thing. In the second game, when Carlsen offered a draw, Giri accepted it. Why? What's the point? Draw gives him the same result as a lose, why wouldn't he try to push for a win, even if it resulted in him loosing? Can someone explain the logic behind it?

    • @ThangNguyen-ko5ze
      @ThangNguyen-ko5ze 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Ehrmantraut it's better to draw than to lose. The chance of winning is not that high, and u certainly don't wanna be beaten by Magnus 2 times in a row.

    • @Ekkerrr
      @Ekkerrr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because Giri had 6 seconds left with a near-impossible position.

    • @xkambar
      @xkambar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it really? Draw means you're 2nd in a tournament. So does losing. Same thing.

    • @xkambar
      @xkambar 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So he gave his "near-impossible", for "impossible". Sounds like a bad deal

    • @wolfspain7385
      @wolfspain7385 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Giri actually offered the draw and Carlsen accepted it. A loss would only serve to lower his rating further. A draw against Magnus is a plus in many people's eyes. Magnus forced the trade of queens and he was in a better position at the moment the offer was made. There was nothing left for Giri to play for. Might as well cut your losses and have a draw even if it meant handing the title to Magnus.

    It's always irrationally bothered me that there is no fancy name for the diagonal or an individual square. You have to go from saying rank and file to saying "square" which just doesn't sound as official or menacing lol, it's just always slightly bothered me. If anyone knows some other name please let me know

    • @amjan
      @amjan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, the English terminology is very underwhelming. In most languages we "kill" rather than 'capture'. For 'square' in Polish we use a word that means 'field' (which rings well with 'battle field'). Also, we don't have a 'queen', but a "hetman" which is a political title from Central and Eastern Europe, historically assigned to military commanders. Makes much more sense than the queen, doesn't it? And the 'bishop' is called a runner/messenger (from military terminology). All of that gives more of a warfare vibe.
