I sympathise with all three of these individuals, especially the young lady. I hear her when she said she was in a really good place for the first time in her life and bam, the curtain drops ... same here ... hugs and good thoughts to all of us who have been slammed hard, while the 1% are getting bonuses on the tax payers dollar!

Here it is 2018 and things really have NOT changed that much... Sure, people have jobs, but lower paying jobs combined with record levels of personal debt. Wall Street and the bankers have rigged things such that saving money is no longer encouraged due to low interest rates. It's only "Booming" for Wall Street and the Investor class. The modern day "Homeless Encampment" is nothing but a modern day "Hooverville". We are in a low key "Depression". If it wasn't for Social Security it would be just like the 1930s.

Natalie Baptiste I could be wrong but I don't think online jobs were doing great either at this time. This video was 10 years ago and the recession hit hard. Hopefully they are back on their feet and doing well 10 years later. More opportunities, especially online have opened up. I was struggling around that time as well. Doing fine now.

Looking at the social network as charity is a view that encompasses the attitude towarda social services in this country. It also shows how politicians have gotten away with cutting the budget for social services and placing so many hoops you need to be a gymnast to make it to the other side or hope you have access to a social worker. And even when you can make it to the other side, you then need to be talked out of feeling shame for being in a period in your life where you need support. Like no amount of seeing this in my job every week will ever make it less incredulous. As a country, we should be ashamed that too many people make more on public benefits than they do working. We should be ashamed that the moment people start going up while on public benefits, they get kicked right off the latter and back to where they started (if they are lucky because its likely they will be worst).

These American houses are huge. Surely they can be sectioned off and each unit rented out. A few tenants/lodgers should pay the bills to allow the owner to live for free.
A window and door installer has joinery skills and could be a great housing maintenance worker, fixing broken boards, or one who boards up broken windows at short notice traveling from one part of town to another.

So many people use the internet to find work so every one applies online. Why not try ringing businesses on the yellow pages? Not many people do that. Ring twice, ask for spare work. Doing a good job with multiple employers builds up your contact list. Thank the employers each time, no matter how small the work.
(Smaller companies often have vacancies they can't fill easily and ring them reaches the boss directly, who can make a decision.)

This gentleman should change the way he presents himself to the public. Get a classic hair cut instead of wearing braids and go to a Goodwill Store or the Salvation Army and look for some high quality dress shirts, and get some nice slacks and shoes, then see what happens when he applies for a job. Be sure to shave, put on aftershave, and brush your teeth. When you get the job, go to a voice coach to learn how to speak better. Good luck.

Why don't people look for work outside the U.S.? These are the typical closed minded people who live by fear. Fear is quit paralyzing if you allow it to take hold of you. There is always work just not always where you are. They could move to East Europe and make their money as a boot black, go to the Middle East and become a fisherman, become a Mariachi in Mexico, rent jet skis in the Caribbean, etc. There are plenty of jobs everywhere if you open your mind and truly separate fear and closed mindedness.

When you go back to school, it doesn't necessarily mean for years. Also, why not go back at 42? He may live another 40 years. If he can change the last 25 years of his work life by getting some kind of marketable credential - he'll improve his life and future. I'd love an update.
