USN DDs: good guns, good torps, good conceal, good turn, good speed = very easy and consistent to play. Great utility.
Only when you reach tier VIII
@@bumblebity2902 tier 5 :>
'good guns' good luck hitting anything smaller than a heavy cruiser at more than 6km in any US DD from before T7 or so...
RN DDs better on every metric except duration of smoke, as a utility for team. I grinded the Gearing and Des Moines, then parked them. Can't deal with the floaty shells. I live in New Zealand 100 ms behind NA server. Leading with those shells and that kind of latency is painful.
@@taiko1237 wat. Farragut is a beast in tier 6 match. Especially tier 6 or 6-7 ranked
I honestly disagree, I think the daring line is a waaaaaaay better beginner dd line for beginners
Ehh I push back on that. The Daring is a beast, but the short duration smoke, hydro, and pen angles let you get away with more than a gearing. In a Gearing you have to learn map and ship movement…need to learn how to engage and disengage, conserve hp, more of the fundamental skills that make you a terror when you switch to the Daring.
Nah
I think it is almost a 1a and 1b kind of situation. While the Daring line can be nice to use with the hydro and acceleration, newer players can struggle with that short burst smoke and the single fire torps. Gearing line is all around "easier" to play and master. Daring is just as nice to start, but has a much higher skill ceiling with the slow speed and some of its gimmicks.
I learn't DD's in the British line, They have some steep learning curves, they are squishy and have very slow deceleration, easy to get caught out on short smoke and very clumsy at low speeds. But once you make the necessary adjustments, I quickly unlocked all the British Emblems because of all the high XP games in them.
I love the Shimakaze now, but that took such a long time to learn to play successfully, once I worked out you really play it as it's name is intended, the "Divine wind" to be felt but not seen.
An excellent old ship
Ounly got gearing recently, mainly because I was content with the fletcher wich is my favorite class of destroyer.
Real fun ship
The Forrest Sherman, even if it's a premium, is an incredibly fun dd to play
Yeah, also it's torps are quite good, despite poor firing angles. With use of RPW, obviously.
Because a premium cannot be fun?
@@papaversomniferum2365I use the Torps of the Forrest Sherman more as zoning and area denial Torps. I hit them more often than you think, usually 1-2 per match.
@@finnm.2582 same, I think Sherman's torps are quite useful in every match, no matter how it goes. Sure, Sherman's detecting range and that is she very sluggish may be a problem, yet i do decent games eventho I'm more CA/CB/Battlecruiser focused player.
@@papaversomniferum2365 I play all classes but I have most of my played games by far in DDs.
I started on a NA server the year the game launch, and IMMEDIATELY went right into the Japanese DD line...not even a moment's hesitation once I saw the "3 5-torpedo tube"
layout.
So glad you mentioned DDs aren't just for damage. ! Think that's what gets most DDs killed in the first 5minutes
Agree about the kill rate, but going forward to spot or cap is dangerous with a CV in play, and with lots of radar cruisers these days. You don't necessarily have to engage to get killed real quick.
5:32 - The Gearing is one of the best torpedo DD in the game, although it was and is never perceived as such
Its torpedoes, aside from the DW torpedoes, offer the best overall package. They have a range of 16.5 km, a speed of 66 knots (nearly 73 knots with the right skills and equipment), and the target has only 7.90 seconds (7.16 seconds) to react if no Hydro is running (for comparison: with F3 torpedoes, it's 8.82 / 8 seconds). The damage of 17,900 might not be the highest, but it's still high enough to seriously annoy a Satsuma player with 2 or 3 hits. Additionally, the spread of the US DD torpedoes is sufficiently narrow, making them very effective at both short and long distances. Even the torpedo reload times (116 / 93 seconds) are still quite acceptable for a ship from the early days (For comparison, a properly equipped and skilled overpowered Benham has a torpedo reload time of 65 seconds.).
With the legendary module installed, the concealment of 5.6 km is excellent, and the ship can even defend itself a bit with its guns. However, gun engagements should be limited to short distances, as accuracy drops significantly against destroyers beyond 8 to 9 km.
There are two critical points for Gearing players to be aware of: first, you only have 19,400 (22,900) health, which now places you in the lower third of T10 destroyers. Second, despite what the rudder shift time and turning radius might suggest on paper, the ship feels quite sluggish, especially noticeable if you've previously played the Benson or Fletcher. For this reason, I have never really warmed to Gearing.
I mostly agree. I set it up 100% for torps (like you said, it can be quite the torp boat), and then leverage the smokes for the team. I cannot hit the guns, so they are for free damage or by necessity.
You can check radar ranges through the scoreboard now, so you CAN get away without knowing they by heart. There arent many ships that take their smoke over radar, so I at least just always assume they got radar until I see that sneaky yue yang or minotaur pop their own smoke ,P
I missed that. How? If it's not blindingly obvious I usually miss it...
@@Colstah Well now you know :D So that is good ^_^
Rule #1 for any DD player SLM is smoke screens attract torpedoes! 😂🤪
Yes absolutely.
One of Jingles favourite sentences: "And as we all know smoke screens are torpedo magnets!" 😄
Shell magnets too. Sometimes, when I have nothing else to shoot at in my BB, I shoot smoke screen where I know there is a dd. Got few hits a few times
If you want to have exiting game play, play the Shima with the 8km torps.
German destroyers usually have poor handling. There are two lines, the balannced line and the AP focused line, if I remember correctly both feature 25mm belt armor which can shatter HE. Oh and they feature the signature German hydro.
The main line is closest to Vanilla, but the Ebling line features larger caliber guns, very big guns and the shells will penetrate a wide variety of targets, but the HE shell damage are comparable to even USN destroyers, which are a whole inch smaller in gun caliber.
DD's are deadly in tiers V thru VII which is a good place to learn torp rush, capping & gunning/ torp from smoke. Will make you a better player once you get to high tier DD's.
I agree with you SLM i have enjoyed DD play grabbing a cap; moreover, defending a cap can be a fearsome and game long task sometimes. Learning many the many skills necessary to improve your chance at survival is a learning experience in of itself. Great video I would like to see more videos like this from you . Have a blessed day friend and a hearty salute o7.
I've loved Gearing forever. My advice; go Legendary module & full torpedo build with the 16.5's. I also prefer Def AA.
As to the rest; Daring is the best, maybe only, "balanced" DD at tier 10. Z52 is supposed to be balanced, but it's dogpoop. Which is why you almost never see it.
As to the American line being "best" in a sense; it kind of is in that you start with virtually no torpedo power at all. Forcing you to learn the other aspects of DD play.
I don't know about the meta these days, but back in 2021, Daring was the best dd in the game (ranked/clan battles). Change my mind. Heals, lots of oh-sh*t smokes, self-defense hydro, ok firepower/arcs with a 360° back turret for easy wiggling, good enough camo to cap and recon, ok torpedos with single fire option. Often +1 consumable with the special captain. Hit and run against superior firepower, or gun down weaker enemies. IMO the perfect allround package unlike those one trick ponies like Black, Khaba, Kléber, Marceau. And best of all: tech tree.
I agree that Gearing has been power crept too hard. So is Shima. Both of these ships don't have any other perks than your basic T10 torpedo boats. Yes, Gearing is a torpedo boat, don't let the guns fool you.
One thing to note about the Gearing is the fact that she gets 21mm plating in the middle of the ship. This will shatter HE from guns smaller than 127mm like Halland or Daring
True, but not the short fuse AP on Vampire.
@@anotherrandominternetdog yeah the ap of Daring is also a Problem
My 1st to TXs were Kurfurst and Gearing. I got the Gearing leg module through the combat mission chain.
I love playing the German DD line with hydro when i am plissed-of by subs: they are great sub-hunters with long-range sonar and mega depth-charges.
My favorite American DD is the Farragut. Great for earning credits, unlike the higher tier ships.
Welcome to authentic dd life! Its game changing.
Gearing is very solid. I have over 5000 games in gearing. by far my fav DD
The US DD line can be great. They can out fight most other DDs with a bit of help from a cruiser . Lay some smoke and spot for that buddy.
Doing the same for the Research points. It's been rough switching from BBs.
I went Deep water torps though. Thought I'd get Sa Zhenbing goin.
The floaty shells are so hard to get hits on other dds with in gearing but you used to it over time
For beginners, I do think the British DDs are better. I pretty much gave up on DDs because of a bad time with Farragut. But when the Battle of the Somme event came out (with a high chance of a free T9 premium) I figured, "Screw it, it's worth a shot." And Somme restored my willingness to play destroyers. I think I free xp'd to Mahan, (which was aight) and then Benson+ are _fun._ *But,* if you know how to play one (techline) RN DD, you know how to play them all. They're a line of good little minnows.
My 1st T10 DD, always liked it, still do.
I actually preferred the Fletcher to the Gearing, which was my first level 10 ship & DD. The Fletcher is just a much more comfortable and manoeuvrable ship to me, and really doesn't sacrifice much. That's what I found to be the biggest disappointment with the Gearing, for all the work to get it I ended up with a more sluggish and not that much more powerful ship than the tier 9 Fletch - which I adored.
And don't assume a UK light cruiser doesn't have radar.... until you see the smoke!
While Gearing was my 1st T10 DD, I found most of my casual DD play success in Brittish and German old line DDs.
It was not just T10 Daring but already T9 Jutland proved its value. I think already low tier Wakeful was fun to play.
German DDs are noticeable from Z23.
Although German require more support if you get in open water skirmish with another DD.
Worst line to play seem Italian DDs.
I think WG can't balance both SAP streght against other DDs and lack of gun range there once you face bigger ships. Investing into gun range on captain and also on module is pretty painfull.
(But maybe there is someone who enjoys them)
great video. have gone that tech tree two time, its solid, ( Research Bureau )
Gearing is my clan battle DD to take most of the time. My clan will send me to our cap side alone and delay the enemy team with the torp pressure while they full send it on the other flank. Works 4/5 times.
The Gearing was my go to DD for clan battles for 4 of the 6 years I have been playing this game. I always did very well in it. It took the Marceau to take its place as my main clan battles DD. Is it worth getting in 2024? Yes, it´s still a relevant tier 10 DD.
Nice idea for commoners like us ;-)
Hilarious - I just unlocked this on Monday myself!
With torpedoes, look and the detection ranges and speed. Some torpedoes are just too easy to spot and dodge.
Germans DDs are hard to master, but once you do, they are very fun to play with :V
I would watch your videos of you grinding up the shima line and I would like to see you go up the z52 line also so yeah definitely the daring line but those are other lines I would like to see you go up to
RIP old Gearing model...
She used to be THICC...
i think secretly the jutland and daring... might be the best in game...although never never underestimate a unicom benham player
Just to et you know, grinded is not a word. The past participle of grind is ground.
I will make it a word
Nice vid 👍
Sealord sounds like he's learning the concept of PTFO... he might become a fluffy unicorn after all
Daring line is much better grind
I wish for a t10 ashasio with 3x5 with the deepwater torps that only. Bb can hit
I tell folks, if its your first dd line, go up the british dd line. They teach you how to dd.
GEARING :D:D:D:D:D:D:D I love the gearing :D:D
Hoping for the Allen M. Sumner some day
Legendary mod on gearing is almost mandatory you can surprise unaware dd players like in shima who think they will outspot you
What's really crazy is when you have halsey on gearing and get a double strike. Non legendary goes down to 5.3km. I've done it multiple times but haven't gotten much use out of it. Normally it's a steamroll when I get it
Legendary goes down to 5.0km
yea ok for 1st dd. but just about evey dd u come across will out dpm u if they can aim.
That's why it's super important to save hp for the late game in gearing. Problem is not many games have that true late game anymore lol
I still haven't touched DD'S i went full Battleship and Cruisers probably a learning curve playing Destroyers just honestly hated them compared to bigger ships eventually gonna get to it just would rather push it back to the last type of ships i touch next to Carriers
Try out Hayate next, its a decent IJN gearing too.
what's the best recommendation for t9 fletcher as far as commander skills and ship equipment?
GG!
The Gearing most certainly still is the best all around DD in the game.
American lines, good at all master of none
The full quote is worthwhile here… “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”
You have guide on how to be good at cap contestion?
When you get the time. Please showcase the Odin, no one else wants to brave this ship.
Odin is fantastic. Got it in the first dockyard event and it's great in operations, though it's secondaries need some improvements imo.
I love this ships too. Good mobility, torp, decent gun, secondary...everything is ok, except when you are low tier...and you are very often low tier so you try to survive.
Guys lets be honest here odin is dogsh.... . Agir exists for one and also brandenburg exists whivh is waaaaay better at same tier. Idk what the fuss is about odin its just terrible.
@@mertc8050 First time i played Agir, someone said to me " you will ask for refund ". So i guess Agir is worst than Odin?
To be honest, there are two things for me very different. Ships on the paper and what YOU can do with it. You can play the best ships in the game, if you are a tomatoes, you will be blaps easy and you do nothing. But a good player with a " not so good ship " still can carry just because this player is good.
Odin can be a good ship and same for Agir. And some game will be bad one for many reasons but that's ok. I personnally have good feeling with her so i will continue to play Odin.
@@quisidia5304 Im not taking your or others skill into account. Look at the stats, its just bad lets compare it to brandenburg for ex. Odin has less hp, less guns, less secondaries, terrible torpedo angles because its at the stern. And pros are hydro, maybe manuverability i havent checked that, forward gun angles probably also havent checked but not much guns anyway, reload is probably lil better too and thats all the things i could think about for pros its that bad tell me where im wrong lol
Japanese DD is the beginner DD line.
Beginning torp centered line - yes.
Haragumo is by far a better DD than Gearing at Tier X
7years later I still haven’t bought shimakaze even though I unlocked it since year one lol😅
I've played since beta and I've only recently gotten Gearing also. I'm disappointed I waited so long.
My highest damage game is in gearing it was about 250000
Dont think USN DDs are a good pick for beginners. They re really powercrept after all those years. And they re uncomfortable to play. At lower tiers you cant even stealth torp. The shell arcs makes it really dificult to hit stuff even at mid ranges. Id say even the Grosowoi line is a better pick for new players. The torps also suck for a while but you can hit stuff with the guns.
Anyways. British DDs and the Gdansk line are the best picks for new players.
You using the wrong torpedoes shows how genuine you are when you say you don't play DDs. 16.5km torpedoes are THE reason gearing is worth playing. You get a ship with average guns, good concealment, long smoke, and average speed ALONG WITH mega range torpedoes to harass campers from safety. Without that, it's just a worse Hayate.
@@CyberneticArgumentCreator like I said, I was just trying out the stock set, I have since swapped to the 16.5s
Do not do it !!!! changing to DD's is the end. You will learn that DD's control the game. Ever win a game after loosing your DD's ? The game is slow not playing a DD. PS: turn off your " Post-processing" in your graphics settings will bump your FPS.
we'll make a shim playa outta you yet.
I'm the founder and president of the Nicholas fan club. Running AA Defensive fire, citadeling cruisers ( th-cam.com/video/rR3WiGoKgTw/w-d-xo.html ), stealth torping ( th-cam.com/video/abJloGzSoUE/w-d-xo.html )....it's the best.
You should try (laughs sadistically) the U.K. line. It's a solid line of pain.
You mean the line that doesn't have a single bad ship?... You can't be serious. 😅
@jakubslavik5595 I sink so bad there. Also my main DD line. Bit being mid on a good day don't help me.
Nah German line is the worst UK and french line are among the best followed by pan eurobeat torpedo line
Most cc recommend daring line
@jakubslavik5595 more an I get deleted fast line. Detection near guaranteed at torp range, short smoke. Good speed ok turning though.
Great video 😎
