- Total Recall turned 30 this year and on top of being peak, early 90's science fiction action spectacle, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Paul Verhoeven crafted a sneaky brilliant treatise on the nature of memory and the self. Starting from a short story by the king of all sci fi adaptations, Philip K. Dick, We Can Remember If For You Wholesale was just a 20 page short story first published a 1966 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. So how did fewer than two dozen pages turn into the pulpy 1990 classic and a remake we don't need to talk about? It's time to ask, What's the Difference?

I love how Verhoeven manages to make films both dumb enough to enjoy as a kid, and smart enough to enjoy as an adult.

Arnold’s most under rated talent is recognition of talent. To be one of the greatest action movie stars, you can’t just star in schlock, you’ve got to get onto good properties. Arnold went above and beyond, testing his limits, but the properties he was was incredible in relied on more than just his star power. He would try his best to get the best of the best to do what they do best. Personally, that’s why I love him as an actor.
And the effects have hold up pretty well

Thats why I love Robocop and Total Recall they are the perfect blend of 80s schlock but taken seriously. Like they both are actually really thoughtful and heartfelt while also actually having a lot of commentary about society.

That clip you guys showed from, “The Twilight Zone” is the episode “Five Characters in Search of an Exit.” I watched that episode three days ago on Netflix. That episode has one of the greatest plot twist ever

It being one of the few Twilight Zone episodes I'd already seen I was surprised to know it. It's memorable at the very least.
I reccomend you watching "S02E26 - Shadow Play" and "S05E03 - Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", there are others twilight zone episodes who deal with reality/dream/illusion, but these two are really nice.

Something no one brings up when discussing how to interpret the movie is the scene immediately after Quaid goes Under. The one where he becomes uncontrollable and screams you blew my cover. After this we are told that the ego trip portion of his trip hadn’t been implanted, that Quaid had his memory of his trip to rekall erased and he awakens in a taxi. If Quaid had his memory erased and only found out about rekall because of his run in with Harry, then why are we shown him going stark raving mad? To me that one scene is proof that what Quaid experiences the rest of the film isn’t a dream. That and the fact that minority report was originally going to be adapted to make a sequel to total recall.
I think it's real, too. There are scenes in the movie where Quaid isn't even present. If it's a dream in Quaid's POV, how are we seeing things Quaid isn't seeing?
In all those years since i watched the movie, talked about and got to read about it on the internet its amazing how all the points used to say it was real or fake are valid and it can go both ways.The final point, i guess, is what the director says and, iirc, in the commentary track he said its all a dream, Quaid never left the chair, killing the doctor was the point of no return and the white light when he kisses Melina is the lobotomy happening. Even the excessive violence is explained as this is what happens if the dream is an action film but also a way to show how each kill is actual damage to his mind. And to this day the only thing i want to know is what exactly Coohagen meant when he said he would blow up the machine and get back home for breakfast. This may sound blasphemy but was also expecting a few lines on the remake. Yes, that film wasnt supposed to exist but we have a decent action thing if we forget its a remake.
It really does but make sense and we can get less angrier than other films who does it thinking it was a smart twist.
The remake has a more plausible everyman, but a dumber plot about "The Fall". Why blow up an effective means of transporation? And once you start saying it's a dream (including things the protagonist is unaware of) who's to say ANY of it is "real" including the existence of Quaid/Recall? Could just be Verhoeven's dream, and same could be said of any non-documentary he makes.
I think you might be thinking of Blade Runner with that whole director-spoils-the-surprise thing. I even just checked right now and I can't find anybody from the movie saying one way or another if Total Recall is real.

This movie has so many great scenes! One of my favorite is the shot of the midget chick shooting the machine gun while standing on the bar looking totally badass! It’s sooo cool and sooo funny at the same time. The x-Ray machine they walk through is really cool too, and still holds up with its special effects. I also love the robot taxi driver and when Quaid uses the guy as a human shield, it’s so over the top and entertaining, one of my favorite movies of all time!
Arnold may not have been the best actor, but he was surely legendary
Per wiki Dan O'Bannon wrote the screenplay for Alien, adapted from a story he wrote with Ronald Shusett. THIS masterpiece screenplay is credited to that pair and Gary Goldman. Screen magic, and thanks for the endless toiling on rewrites, guys. Bravo. Perfect example of hard work paying off.
(IMO Alien - the first one, and only that one - is in the select group of the finest S.F. films ever. Yet I can in a nontwisted sense envision Arnold as the title character there as well! Seriously. Like the Terminator. Insane idea, but he's never let me down yet, on anything whatsoever.)

I absolutely love this movie, it's one of my favorite Arnold films! Thank you!
He has 3 sets of memories in the movie. His self who went on the mission and Malena was contact found out the rebels were protected by psychs. As hes investigating he finds the machine and goes back deciding to not kill the rebels. Then his second memory is the construction worker the third was the spy memories from recall which activated a hybrid between his real self which had the skills to accomplish what he needed and the good guy attitude to fool the psychics.
WELL, I really hope so the 2012 remake version is a DELUSION ...

This one & RoboCop are some of my best movies of all time. I've watched them over 1000 times & still not done yet.
This movie is such a classic.
I had a college course that was called Philosophy of Film, and we studied Total Recall at one point. One of the textbooks had Total Recall on the cover.
@CineFix The storyline has to be real, because we see scenes that are outside of Quaid's perspective. If it were an implant, his trip as a secret agent would only deal in those scenes which he would personally experience. Just a detail I realized in the the theatre as a teenager...
I don’t buy it, I can have a much easier time believing that the reason we see that is it’s all part of the in-depth memory they’ve created. The movie isn’t in first person we are already getting a different perspective than Quaid and we’re already talking about implanted memories so it’s not hard to believe that they are that in-depth. What’s hard to believe are all of the insane coincidences you have to believe if you believe it’s real

A point someone made is that Quaid being played by Arnold Schwarzenegger by itself implies that the whole thing is real because there's no way a guy like Arnold is an "every man". On top of that, anything that takes place outside of the character's point of view wouldn't make sense as the result of an implanted memory.
I would argue that the fact that Schwarzenegger doesn't look like a "everyman" would actually be a strike against the idea of everything being real. The reason why is that real spies generally try to avoid standing out from a crowd which Schwarzenegger most certainly does not.
I mean its possible that Quaid is just a construction worker who does bodybuilding during his spare time, that he once had greater aspirations of becoming famous like the actor who plays him but instead ended up failing in those aspirations & now he's stuck in a dead-end job as some random schlub dreaming of all the things he could have become instead of what he is now.
@@travisjordan3853 Ah, but then if he doesn't look like an average spy he's less likely to be detected as one! Unless the resistance realizes that and starts looking for someone who doesn't look like a spy, in which case your best bet is to double down and give them too obvious a target! Unless they know that too...
Joking (and revolving argument) aside, Quaid isn't a spy per se, he's only on the one mission. Since the whole reason he had to undergo the mind-wipe was because Quato could read his thoughts and know if he's a spy or not just by being in proximity, his physical appearance doesn't really count as a strike either for or against him.
What I wanna know is how Rekall could have gotten away with such an unambiguous ending if it was all a dream. Wouldn't Quaid's first action upon waking up be to go watch the news and find out, oops Mars is still red? Not much of a vacation if it can easily be disproven within minutes of waking.
Imo the whole movie would have been better if Quaid was played by a less over the top action hero actor.
I watched this for the first time the other week. Easily now one of my favorites.

Michael Ironside was great in this movie. Sadly he immediately followed this with Highlander II.
He made up for that when Verhoeven cast him again in Starship Troopers.

This is still one of my favourite movies, when it came out on vhs it kind of blew my 11 year old mind.

The director himself said it was a dream/rekall implant. He chose not to leave his fantasy, fade to white. Mystery solved.

Probably the only thing that keeps it from being pure 100% ambiguous in the "was it all a dream" debate are the handful of scenes where Quaid isn't there.
I mean, if it were a fantasy in his mind how and why would he know about the stuff he wasn't there for?

I just finished the novel for “The Prestige” and I’d love to see a “what’s the difference” on that one.
One often overlooked fact about Total Recall is that if it's real, Quaid pretty much starts off another World War. In the news montage early in the film it's stated that the only thing keeping the "Southern Bloc" from invading the "Northern Bloc" are the weapons that use the travidium mined on Mars. When Quaid destroys the travidium reserves on Mars, the stalemate is broken and War inevitably ensues.
Also the biggest credence to the "it's real" camp are the scenes without Quaid, namely between Richter and Lori and Richter and Cohagen. There's really no explanation for these scenes if it's all in Quaid's head. Why would he be fully creating these scenes of people and then act as if he has no formal memory of their discussions if it's only taking place in his mind? This is why if you really wanna pull the whole mind freak angle and leave it ambiguous you kinda have to follow some rules. The first being: Every scene has to feature the character having the whole existential question.
The Total Recal remake does have subtext of mind philosophy. The subtext is more in line with the Phillip K. Dick novel.
I actually liked The Lord of the Rings (Every adaptation of the Midde-Earth IP), The Witcher, Hannibal Rising, The Golden Compass, The Goldfinch, Percy Jackson, Twilight, Artemis Fowl, Harry Potter (I apologize for J.K. Rowling), Master & Commander, Vampire Academy, The Spider Wick Chronicles, Narnia, Earthsea, The Black Dahlia, The Mist, All The Pretty Horses, The Dark Is Rising, Stand By Me, and Eragon. Any book adaptations that many people have considered it as failures. No more! I had enough of this unnecessary criticism. Enough is enough. I don't find it bad if the adaptations go against the source material. I have no problems about this. To me, this isn't a knock against the source material of these works. I consider this, as a sign of changing times. Times are changing, it can't go back to the way it used to be. Actors, directors, and producers alike. I give them credit for making the book to film or tv adaptations in the first place. I don't like when they remake The Golden Compass, as tv show. Not for standing out on its own, but made to be spiteful against the previous adaptations and be much better. I am sorry, I don't find this excusable anymore. I am not having this. The book adaptation trend weren't a thing in the 2000's, they have been around in Hollywood and across the globe. This is what makes me annoyed about doing any form of adaptations. It's called societal expectations. Every person, every form of life, no matter what alignments, or viewpoints they have. Have all rights of what they can do or what they cannot do. You can't judge a property by its own name and cover. Let it be, what it wants to be.
Eragon wasn't received by die hard book fans. Yet, I disagree. I enjoyed it. I find the changes justified. It didn't left anything open ended. Eragon didn't really need a sequel. I found it lukewarm. It ended things well.
I absolutely LOVE this movie, especially because the events never happened. I never realized this when I was a kid.

I understand it’s left up to interpretation but there is overwhelming evidence that the events never occurred. I think on a superficial level people who don’t fully pay attention or appreciate the film believe that the events took place but there’s more than enough clues that prove that the events never took place. Most of those clues take place when he is purchasing the package memories and the ego trip. The odds that every single thing he purchased would occur throughout the movie are astronomical.

But tbh almost anyone can prove either, even if superficial. CineFix's ending jabs do that.
As to "astronomical" that's secondary to accepted or "given" inputs. Any probability-based conclusions are trumped by "given" statements. Not my rules; that's just how logic and mathematics works :)

I felt the exact same way on every viewing. It wasn’t until I took the time to really watch every detail and take all data into account that I realized it’s far more likely that the events never took place. Again, the clues are at the recall ego purchase scene. Every single thing he purchased came true. Of course this could be coincidence but things like the alien artifacts, saving the planet, and the other items specified on ego list and in background of recall company make it much more likely it never happened. I honestly didn’t like this fact in beginning but now I actually think it makes it a better movie. On a basic level, it seems to be left up to interpretation but I think it makes it a better movie to realize it didn’t happen. Regardless of my personal wants on what’s true...

Total Recall 30 years on remains one of Arnie's best sci-fi movies ever. It is also the last ever movie to use practical effects and is way better than the terrible 2012 remake with Colin Farrell.

Another great Philip K. Dick story - What you never mention, is that in real life, Dick actually did go nuts.
Total Recall is one of my favorite movies.
One thing that should be mentioned is that Quail and Quade are both essentially supermen in the book and the movie. Quail apparently went through 15 bodyguards en route to assassinating a politician and is so good at overwhelming armed men that the agents who originally confront him basically know they have no shot against him as soon as he remembers his former skills. Meanwhile, Quade is clearly an elite agent who can do all that same stuff Quail was said to be capable of as well. We know this because he actually does it throughout the movie.

The remake was shot with greasy lenses in which the dimmest light source will cause lens flares so distracting as to make it almost impossible to notice how unimpressive it was.
You need to do a "What The Difference" with Candyman and The Forbidden.

I believe verhoeven confirmed it was all a dream/memory. And that the whole "but we see characters when Quaid isnt present" logic doesnt disprove it. Memories from recall are probably like dreams, wherein you can be disembodied and viewing others
